Video Review: Vestalife Butterfly Dock for iPod
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
The Vestalife Butterfly is an $80 iPod dock with no remote control and so-so sound quality. The build quality is okay, but the whole getup looks like it should be hanging over a baby’s crib. If it cost $30 or $40 it’d be a whole different story, but at $80 this one’s truly for butterfly enthusiasts and family members of Vestalife employees only.

Microsoft and TomTom settle Linux patent suit, Linux not necessarily in the clear
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
Well, that was fast -- just a month after Microsoft set the open-source world on fire by claiming that TomTom's use of Linux violated its FAT filesystem patents, the two companies have settled, with TomTom paying the always-popular "undisclosed amount" and letting MS license four of its navigation patents for free. What's more, TomTom has also agreed to remove certain functionality from its PNDs within two years. That's huge -- not only did TomTom's attorneys calculate that the total cost of this settlement was less than the cost of a trial and a potential loss, the overwhelmingly one-way nature of the deal implies they felt they were holding a bad position. Since we don't know if that was more to do with the navigation patents or the FAT patents, we can't really say what's going to happen next, but Microsoft's made no bones about the fact that it thinks Linux violates all sorts of its IP, and cruising to an easy settlement in a month like this just might encourage its legal department to go digging for gold in troubled economic times. We'll see.Filed under: GPS

Sony: ‘no plans’ for a PS3 price cut
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No CommentsThat PlayStation 3 price drop rumored to be coming tomorrow? Not happening, according to Sony. In a statement given to Joystiq, SCEA public relations manager Al De Leon says, "we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation." Although we wouldn't put it past the company to deny it up until the second before an official announcement, we seriously doubt Sony would announce any sort of price cut on the day it's most likely to get drowned out by fake PSP2 mockups. No word on that speculated $100 PS2, but we wouldn't get our hopes up here, either.Filed under: Gaming

VIA’s P710-HD module brings 1080p to EPIA-P710 Pico-ITXe board
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
We've got to hand it to 'em -- VIA sure knows where the weak spot is in the netbook / nettop market, and it's doing an impressive job bringing 1080p to areas where it was once thought impossible. After trumpeting its Surfboard concept and VX855 chipset, the company is striking yet again from the Embedded Systems Conference with its P710-HD module. Said device, which works in conjunction with the EPIA-P710 Pico-ITXe board, brings full HD playback support to a mainboard that's almost small enough to fit in your oversized cargo pocket. The expansion module includes S3 Graphics' 4300E embedded GPU, 256MB of GDDR2 memory and support for dual DVI and HDMI outputs. Sadly, there's no mention of a price or release date, but we'd bet NVIDIA, Intel and the rest of the gang are definitely paying attention.

Sierra Wireless AirCard 402 plays PC Card and ExpressCard roles
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No CommentsWe can't say there are an awful lot of folks out there looking for a single mobile broadband card that'll play nice in both PC Card and ExpressCard slots, but for that niche that's intently paying attention, have a look at this. The Sierra Wireless AirCard 402 is the company's first to offer such 2-in-1 functionality, and it's designed to operate on EV-DO Rev. A networks handling speeds of up to 3.1Mbps (downlink) / 1.8Mbps (uplink). Users can also bank on the company's TRU-Locate GPS service to "quickly and accurately establish location for local searches and navigation." There's no mention of a price or release date, but it should be on hand for us to peer at during CTIA this week.

Rumor: Canon producing a pro digital video camera?
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
Canon may have decided to take the digital recording to the next level. There's been some pretty amazing stuff being done with the Canon 5D mkII, and there have been some leaks about where they might be going with this.
Keep in mind, this a rumor only and unconfirmed, it could very easily be a fanboy hoax. But if the rumor is true, Canon is working on a pro-level video camera using their 1x APS-C CMOS sensor that will let them capture up to 120 full frames per second at 12.1 megapixels.

Ricoh develops brighter, lighter, color e-paper
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
It's been a few minutes since we've heard any news regarding color e-paper, and now Ricoh has announced that they've taken a tip from their copier business to create a technology that displays hues fifty percent brighter than those currently available, retaining the graphics even when power is turned off. Unlike other technologies, which use layers of red, green, and blue light separated by sheets of glass, this new iteration uses layered electrochromic compounds that turn cyan, magenta, and yellow variously when electricity is applied -- and if that weren't enough, the company's gone and altered the molecular structure of the compounds to retain their color even when electricity is removed. Rather than using glass, the layers are separated by some sort of clear insulation, resulting in a lighter device and a brighter appearance. The company is looking to bring this to market within the next five years. [Warning: read link requires subscription.]Filed under: Displays

Canon PowerShot SX200 IS reviewed, deemed pretty decent
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
Photography Blog's just put up a rather exhaustive review of Canon's PowerShot SX200 IS. If you've already forgotten, this little guy boasts a 12 megapixel sensor, a 12x optical zoom, and a 3-inch LCD. Among the standout features of the cam, they like the PASM creative shooting modes, and its versatile 12x zoom lens. Drawbacks for the camera include its video mode, LCD (which is a lower resolution than some rivals), and a Smart Auto Mode that leaves a little to be desired. Overall, they seem to think that the camera stacks up quite well against most of its rivals, though they did find that it feel a bit short of its main competitor, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7. There's one more shot after the break, and hit the read link for the full on review.Continue reading Canon PowerShot SX200 IS reviewed, deemed pretty decent

Netflix raising Blu-ray prices, again
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
To all 1 million or so Netflix subscribers who’ve opted for Blu-ray discs, you’re in for another price hike in the coming weeks. What started as a $1 surcharge last September will eventually amount to an increase that’s triple or quadruple what you’re paying now for your online DVD rental service. Before steam starts blowing out of your ears let’s see what that increase actually amounts to.

Netflix raising rates for Blu-ray subscribers by around 20 percent
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/movies/Ruh_roh_Netflix_raising_rates_for_Blu_ray_subscribers_20'; Ruh roh. In a move that will undoubtedly cause an incredibly raucous stir, only to fade away as movie renters realize that Netflix is still the best deal going, America's most adored by-mail rental service is hiking the price of Blu-ray rentals once again. If you'll recall, Netflix already implemented a $1 per month fee for Blu-ray customers back in October, and now it's looking to push that premium higher by around 20 percent across its pricing tiers. The company asserts that the increase (slated to hit April 27th and only applicable to BD customers) is due to it buying more titles on BD to "accommodate the increasing number of Netflix members who prefer renting movies on Blu-ray." In fact, nearly 10 percent of all Netflix customers are choosing BD now, and obviously these platters cost quite a bit more for anyone (even Netflix) to procure. Head past the break to see how big of a hardship this will be on you.

Windows 7 Starter Edition to pave the way for $200 netbooks?
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
Microsoft still hasn't nailed down all the specifics about its much talked about Windows 7 Starter Edition, but it looks like the company is all too happy to talk up a few of the potential side effects of the OS variant, including the promise of some actual $200 netbooks by this coming holiday season. Apparently, Microsoft sees netbooks running Windows 7 Starter Edition as all but replacing current entry-level Linux-based netbooks, which it says see a "disproportionate amount of returns," although the company insists that it will still market Home Premium as the default option for most netbooks. Microsoft also says that's it's going out of its way to make Windows 7 as accommodating for netbook manufacturers as possible, adding that it has cleaned up the system tray and "made some other concessions for the OEMs to help with branding."

Video spoilers: Chris vs. Boulder from Resident Evil 5 is ridiculous
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No CommentsSo I beat Resident Evil 5 late last night, and in addition to liking the game a whole lot more than I initially did—I till think the inventory system is stupid is as stupid does—I have come to the conclusion that Capcom is staffed with a bunch of crazy persons. Let's examine the final level, shall we?
