iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsWelcome to the latest installment of our annual tradition: the iPhone launch day queue experience in pictorial form. London's getting the party started early (not as early as some, admittedly) with a sizable crowd turning the corner from the Apple Store at Regent Street, but we'll keep this post updated with imagery from all over the place. Wouldn't mind if you helped us out with a few of your own pics, either. You know where to send them in by now, and once you've done that, feel free to slide past the break to see how everyone else is doing it.
Update: Now with reports from San Francisco!
Update 2: NY joins the fray!
Update 3: We added some of the more interesting reader-submitted stories.
Update 4: Reports from Palo Alto and San Jose, California!
Update 5: London's doors have swung open and we're now busy activating our brand new Apple phones.
Update 6: Woz and his Segway make their regular appearance at the San Jose Valley Fair Apple Store.
Update 7: We're adding a bunch of reader reports. Even as Apple opens its doors to pre-orderers in the US, the lines remain crazy.Continue reading iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)

So what were the ‘Happy 2010!’ glasses like?
Posted on January 1, 2010 | No CommentsHappy 2010, people who count from Anno Domini using the Gregorian calendar! I greeted the new year by saying, sometime well after midnight, “Oh, it's 2010 already.” I was playing the PC version of Call of Duty 4, which is demonstrably better than the Xbox 360 version I played two years ago. But that's not the point of this here post. No, for I have one question to ask of the people who did go outside and celebrate: what were the “Happy 2010!” glasses like?

Ten gadgets that defined the decade
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Ten_gadgets_that_defined_the_decade'; As 2009 winds down and we try to come up with new and clever ways of referring to the early years of this century, there's really only one thing left to do: declare our ten favorite gadgets of the aughts and show them off in chronological order. It's arguable that if this wasn't the decade of gadgets, it was certainly a decade shaped by gadgets -- one which saw the birth of a new kind of connectedness. In just ten years time, gadgets have touched almost every aspect of our daily lives, and personal technology has come into its own in a way never before seen. It's a decade that's been marked the ubiquity of the internet, the downfall of the desktop, and the series finale of Friends, but we've boiled it down to the ten devices we've loved the most and worked the hardest over the past ten years. We even had some of our friends in the tech community chime in with their picks on what they thought was the gadget or tech of the decade -- so join us for a look back at the best (gadget) years ever!Continue reading Ten gadgets that defined the decade

So, what’d you get?
Posted on December 25, 2009 | No CommentsIt's the final Christmas morning of the decade, and considering that there are only two or three of these left before the world ends, we certainly hope an exuberant Santa Claus dropped off a fairly swank stash of gadgetry overnight. 'Course, today just wouldn't be today without pigging out on calorie-infested foods and spending copious quantities of time with folks you dearly love and desperately loathe, but frankly -- we're just interested in learning what kind of gizmos entered your life this morning for the first time. Tell us what you did (or didn't) get in comments below, and be sure to tell us if you reacted similarly to the kids posted up after the break (no fibbing -- Sir Kringle is already making his list for next year, don'tcha know?).
When you're done, check out what people got excited about in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.Continue reading So, what'd you get?

Ford to give Sync some App Store flavor, opening API to devs in 2010
Posted on December 18, 2009 | No CommentsFord has already shown it can tie the controls of Sync-enabled vehicles to the music and contacts databases of drivers phones and PMPs and though it may take time before our emotions can be detected, the next step is extending that connectivity to downloadable apps on those devices. Since Sync first debuted, the explosion of the App Store concept has meant nearly every smartphone owner is packing plenty of ways to access and use information from the internet, but without an easy way to interact with it while driving. Extending access to vehicle controls could lead to programs like Pandora or Google's turn by turn navigation letting users change stations with their existing stereo knobs, or listen to directions via the in-car system by simply updating their existing software. The first ones to get a crack at it? A few university students, check after the break to see what they came up with given just a few weeks to test system out.

Acer planning ‘five or six’ Android sets in first half of 2010
Posted on December 14, 2009 | No Comments
Alright, let us try out a new term were testing on you: "Androidsplosion." Does that do anything for you? No? Well, that's pretty much the kind of cluster we're going to be running into with the Android camp come the first half of next year thanks to a rumored bumper crop from HTC, some Sony Ericsson gear, undoubtedly a few lookers out of Moto, and now this gear from Acer. The Liquid's just now starting to make the rounds at retail, but the VP of its Asian handset biz says that it has "five or six" additional models on tap for early 2010 that'll run the gamut from low- to high-end. The third and fourth quarters, it seems, aren't yet firmed up -- so if you thought they were going to turn off the tap after that quick burst, you'd probably be wrong. Sadly, despite the well-stocked roadmap, there aren't any indications that the company is looking to expand outside of its Asian and European roots to include a North American presence -- but it's not any more shunning than we're accustomed to 'round these parts.Acer planning 'five or six' Android sets in first half of 2010 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 08:52:00 EST. Purported Motorola roadmap uncovers Sholes Tablet, Motus and other mythical mysteries
Posted on October 14, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Motorola, Android
Okay folks, this is the moment where hauling a spoonful of NaCl down the chute would be highly recommended. DialAPhone seems to have unearthed what looks like a Q4 2009 - Q1 2010 Motorola roadmap, and while the finds are certainly intriguing, we're still hesitant to believe this thing is legit. For starters, this is obviously a European plan, so what we're viewing here may never make the tedious journey across the pond anyway. Secondly, how many of you honestly believe Moto's cooking up a Sholes Tablet? Exactly. That said, we'd be the first to drool should that device (or the Motus and / or Zeppelin) launch early next year, and you can bet your bottom dollar that we'll be scraping the floor for details when CES kicks off in just a few months.
