Backstory: A Nintendo suit said a while back that the company hasn't announced the official name yet for its upcoming handheld 3D gaming device. This of course suggests that 3DS isn't the official name.
Well, that might not be true if Nintendo's recent trademark filings have anything to say about it.

This is strange. Apparently Nintendo has yet to announce the formal name of its upcoming portable 3D gaming device. That means the clever 3DS name we've come to know isn't the real thing. But seriously, is there a name better than 3DS seeing as it's a 3D version of the DS? Unless it's nothing like the DS...maybe this wasn't a fan-made mock-up after all.

Sales of Nintendo's DS games are dropping in Europe, and according to Nintendo there's clear reason why: piracy. With the release of software like R4, it appears that more and more owners of the portable systems are turning to less then reputable sources for their games.

Nintendo might be fast-tracking its upcoming 3DS. Apparently one UK video game industry source stated to CVG that the 3D gaming system will launch this coming October, well before the 2011 date we previously heard. The goal here is to get the system to market prior to the Christmas shopping madness.

For the Nintendo 3DS? Hitachi develops glasses-free, mobile 3D display

Sony, Panasonic, NEC and now Sharp: All of these Japanese tech powerhouses are playing the 3D game now, but what about Hitachi? The biggest (sales-wise) of them all has been working on a glasses-free 3D projection system and sells a 3D cell phone in Japan (pictured), but Hitachi has been relatively quiet in terms of 3D.
Today, however, Hitachi Displays announced [JP] the development of a new 3.1-inch 3D LCD, which is - you guessed it - specifically designed for mobile devices.

Glasses-free 3D displays for mobile devices are nothing new. Hitachi, for example, started selling a 3D-enabled handset [JP] in Japan as early as last year. The Hitachi product didn't make much of a splash, but Sharp's new parallax barrier-based 3D display for mobile devices (which the company announced today) appears to be pretty cool.

Nintendo's announcement of its new portable 3D gamimg device 3DS was very brief, prompting us to speculate about possible features and implications for the way people will play games in the future. But today the Nikkei, Japan's Wall Street Journal, is offering a bit more insight (and the Nikkei is usually a very reliable source).
