AIR for Android app turns Nexus One into slot car controller (video)

AIR for Android, a Phidgets motor control, a slot car set, and a custom built LEGO housing for good measure -- if this project isn't meant for Engadget, we don't know what is! The premise is pretty straightforward: Grant Skinner uses his Nexus One to send accelerometer data to a desktop PC, which then sends it to a motor controller. In turn, the controller tells the cars how fast to go. Tilt forward a little bit, and the car accelerates a little bit. Lean forward a lot, and it picks up speed. Sure beats those cheesy plastic triggers we used as kids! For the interface (which is an SWF that's sent to the handset from the host PC) our man designed a gas pedal with a series of lights that tells you how fast you're going. Android + Asteroids + multiplayer = Androideroids (video)
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsiPad Scrabble playable on your iPhone? Pretty neat. Desktop Asteroids playable on your Android smartphone? Rather more action-packed -- and a little less expensive to get into. Androideroids is a project of Grant Skinner and runs on Adobe's Air platform. It's an eight-player game hosted on a desktop, with each participant given a first-person smartphone view of the vast expanses of space and the hollow rocks scattered throughout it. Meanwhile, a desktop client displays an overhead perspective of the shenanigans, displaying everyone's life and score. Players can either shoot asteroids or each other, tapping on the screen to thrust and fire while tilting to turn. Honestly the move to first-person doesn't seem to have done anything to improve gameplay, but this is still one game of Asteroids we'd make room for in our games folder.

Adobe expects Flash on 250 million smartphones by end of 2012
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsWhile in the midst of fixing a unicorn-sized hole in the security of its desktop software, Adobe has been talking about its future in the mobile space. According to its rose-tinted forecasts, Flash Player will be featured in a quarter billion handsets by the end of 2012, including 53 percent of all smarphones shipped that year. Those are pretty strident words for a company that has yet to ship Flash Player 10.1 in even one new handset, but we're reminded that Android 2.2's leading position on the issue will be swiftly followed by BlackBerry OS, Symbian, webOS, and Windows Phone 7 supporting the full fat Flash experience. Whether all that momentum will be enough to produce an install base of 250 million, we don't know. What we do know, however, is that people want the blasted thing and Adobe had better start doing a bit more work on its mobile player and a little less talking about it -- that's what we're here for.

Adobe fixes critical Flash flaw (so upgrade right now)
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsAdobe has fixed that critical flaw that afflicted so many versions of Flash. So if you're interested in not being on the wrong end of a malicious attack you would do well to upgrade to the latest version of Flash, version 10.1.

Apple revises iOS rules on outside advertisers, cuts out Google, Adobe by implication

Apple and Google's newfound rivalry in the mobile advertising space was already pretty interesting to watch as it stood, and it looks like things just got more interesting still. As expected following Steve Jobs' comments at D8 last week, Apple has now revised its rules on advertising in iOS to allow outside advertisers to collect stats for ads, but the company has included some language in the new rules that seems to effectively cut out Google's AdMob. While it obviously doesn't mention Google by name, only "independent" advertising providers can collect tracking stats, and Apple says that any "advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple would not qualify as independent." That would seem to not only affect AdMob, but Adobe and Greystone's just-announced effort as well, considering it specifically mentions companies affiliated with "development environments other than Apple." Critical Adobe flaw: Still want Flash on your iPhone and iPad?
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsAdobe has warned users that a critical flaw exists in its Flash, Adobe Reader, and Adobe Acrobat software, and it affects every single platform—Mac, Windows, Linux, Solaris, you name it. Should a "hacker" exploit the flaw, he or she could take control of your entire system. Not to defer to Apple's wisdom, but do you really want such a flaky piece of software running on your iPhone or iPad?

Adobe AIR getting native Android app compilation

That's right: Adobe's looking to move some of the same technologies it developed for Flash-to-iPhone app compilation over to Android, where we imagine the company will be meeting a much more receptive audience. AIR -- part of the Flash portfolio of products -- now has a native Android app feature in beta, letting you pump out .apk files from code written in ActionScript 3. Adobe's targeting a release "by the second half" of the year, so this shouldn't take too long to go gold... not to say there aren't perfectly good ways of pumping out Android apps in the meantime, but this should make it a little less painful for seasoned Flash guys to port their stuff.

Smokescreen makes Flash content visible on iPhone and iPad (video)
Posted on May 30, 2010 | No CommentsMind you, it's just a preview release, but Chris Smoak's Smokescreen does exactly what it promises: enable Flash content to play on Apple's iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad. Kind of. Here's how Smokescreen gets around using a Flash plugin as described by Simon Willison:
While it works fine with simple animated banner ads (uh, huzzah!?), we found that Smokescreened Flash content like video and games was impossibly slow when tested on our iPhone 3G. Still, it's a start for this soon to be open sourced Flash player written in JavaScript. Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsGuess what humans? It's that time again -- the Engadget Show returns this Saturday, May 22nd at 5pm... and it's shaping up to be a killer! First up, we'll have an exclusive interview with Adobe's CTO Kevin Lynch (taped at the Google I/O conference), which is sure to be both informative and wildly entertaining. What's more, Josh, Paul, and Nilay will be putting the new HTC Evo 4G through its paces live onstage, then they'll be joined by our very own Chris Ziegler and Laura June for a hard-hitting round of Q&A with the audience. That's right, it's your chance to ask the Engadget editors anything, live and in-person, plus much more (see instructions in the bullet points below). And as usual, we'll have some rocking 8-bit music from minusbaby and visuals from notendo and plenty of those good 'ol Engadget Show shenanigans.

Android 2.2 will invite you to visit ‘Flash-enabled’ sites, rub Apple’s nose in it
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsThe battle for minds is well and truly on now, and if there was any doubt that Google and Adobe are cozying up together to take on Apple, let it now be extinguished. TechCrunch is reporting that the latest version of Android -- you know, the one with the 450 percent performance improvement and buttery smooth Flash playback -- will, upon updating, guide you to visit a selection of Flash-enabled websites. Countering Apple's list of iPad-ready (aka Flash-free) websites, this is clearly intended as a showcase of the Adobe software's capabilities. Ironically, a sizable number of the sites on the list are "mobile optimized," meaning you won't be hitting their full desktop versions (which doesn't quite mesh with the idea of "the full web experience"), but it's still likely to cause some consternation over in Cupertino. All we're wondering now is how much Adobe had to pony up to ensnare such a prominent promo position, but things like that don't stay secret for long.
