AIR for Android app turns Nexus One into slot car controller (video)
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsAIR for Android, a Phidgets motor control, a slot car set, and a custom built LEGO housing for good measure -- if this project isn't meant for Engadget, we don't know what is! The premise is pretty straightforward: Grant Skinner uses his Nexus One to send accelerometer data to a desktop PC, which then sends it to a motor controller. In turn, the controller tells the cars how fast to go. Tilt forward a little bit, and the car accelerates a little bit. Lean forward a lot, and it picks up speed. Sure beats those cheesy plastic triggers we used as kids! For the interface (which is an SWF that's sent to the handset from the host PC) our man designed a gas pedal with a series of lights that tells you how fast you're going. Let's just say we wouldn't mind a setup like this for the Engadget game room. Video after the break.Continue reading AIR for Android app turns Nexus One into slot car controller (video)

Motorola Droid solves Lego-encased Rubik’s Cube in 24 mind-melting seconds (video)
Posted on May 8, 2010 | No CommentsOh sure, you've seen your disgustingly hairy cousin solve a Rubik's Cube in 3 minutes and 13.4 seconds, and we've seen quite a few sophisticated robots do it in far less time. But in the latest episode of "Yes, Droid Really Does," we've got Motorola's darling solving a Lego-encased Cube in just over 24 seconds. Let's recap: a Droid, a Mindstorms NXT monstrosity, a Rubik's Cube and faux techno. Is there any chance you aren't clicking through to watch this video?
Update: Whoops -- had the wrong image in there somehow. Fixed now!Continue reading Motorola Droid solves Lego-encased Rubik's Cube in 24 mind-melting seconds (video)

eBoy’s FixPix iPhone game is basically the greatest thing ever made
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No CommentsOkay, so this isn't out yet, but it's hard to deny that the eBoy-designed Delicious Toys-developed game FixPix is probably the best idea anyone has ever had since the wheel or sliced bread. Maybe that's a little hyperbolic, but as you know, we are huge fans of eBoy and their mind-boggling pixel art. Now the design collective's cityscapes and fantastical scenes have been turned into an iPhone app where you can piece the 3D milieus back together by tilting your phone this way and that. As we said, the title isn't available, but there's an awesome demo site where you can play around with the concept, and it's likely FixPix could see Apple approval any day now. We can barely contain ourselves. Check out a video of the game in action after the break.Continue reading eBoy's FixPix iPhone game is basically the greatest thing ever made

Three Words: Garbage… Pail… Kids
Posted on January 21, 2010 | No CommentsYes, Garbage Pail Kids. In 7-foot wall form. If you thought yesterday’s Star Wars Fathead was expensive at $100, then you may balk at the thought of spending $150 on a larger-than-life Garbage Pail Kids poster. If you, yourself, were a kid in the early- to mid-eighties, and you have a big boy job that pays [...] -
Looks like someone can check ‘Own Super Mario Bros. Sweater’ off his bucket list
Posted on January 12, 2010 | No CommentsSee the young man in the above photo? He’s older than you think. His wife made him that sweater. I don’t know his wife but I can tell you right now that any future argument the two of them have can be ended rather quickly by her saying, “I knitted you a Super Mario Bros. [...] -
So, what’d you get?
Posted on December 25, 2009 | No CommentsIt's the final Christmas morning of the decade, and considering that there are only two or three of these left before the world ends, we certainly hope an exuberant Santa Claus dropped off a fairly swank stash of gadgetry overnight. 'Course, today just wouldn't be today without pigging out on calorie-infested foods and spending copious quantities of time with folks you dearly love and desperately loathe, but frankly -- we're just interested in learning what kind of gizmos entered your life this morning for the first time. Tell us what you did (or didn't) get in comments below, and be sure to tell us if you reacted similarly to the kids posted up after the break (no fibbing -- Sir Kringle is already making his list for next year, don'tcha know?).
When you're done, check out what people got excited about in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.Continue reading So, what'd you get?

Blinged out Michael Jackson phone is fashionably late
Posted on November 6, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets

Michael Jackson may never take the stage again, but that doesn't mean you can't commemorate him in your pocket, right? This special, "limited edition" mobile phone appears to have been dipped in gold and diamonds, and, if we're not mistaken... it's basically a Vertu KIRF that's dressed like a headless MJ? We're pretty light on specs and pricing information here, but rest assured that unless you live in China, you'll probably never be able to get your be-gloved hand on one of these. Nothing like cashing in on the dead.
