iPhone OS 4 beta 4 drops in
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsIf you like living on the brutal, life-altering bleeding edge the same way we do, odds are you've got iPhone OS 4 beta 3 installed on that 3GS of yours -- assuming you have an iPhone 3GS, naturally. That also means that you'll likely be interested to hear that beta 4 is now out and ready for you to download, install, and not brick your phone if everything goes according to plan, just as long as you've got access to an Apple iPhone Developer Program account. Go forth, intrepid readers -- and do report back on your exploits, won't you?

SlingPlayer Mobile for Android goes to private beta?
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No CommentsAndroid's quickly becoming the elephant in the room for Sling Media, so we're delighted to hear today that the promised Android client of SlingPlayer Mobile is apparently entering a private beta period as we speak -- according to a tipster over at Phandroid, anyhow. It seems that some members that signed up to Sling's beta program have been contacted recently with a link to the download and a request that they not discuss the app or the beta program (so much for that), so if everything goes really, really well, we might see a release before too long. The thought of this thing running on the EVO 4G just blows minds, doesn't it?SlingPlayer Mobile for Android goes to private beta? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 06 May 2010 13:16:00 EST. Milestone multitouch browser ported to the Droid by a user-made patch (video)
Posted on January 4, 2010 | No CommentsThis little nugget of software is itself still in beta, but if you can't wait for the full Milestone firmware port to climb out of alpha development, it's a good alternate route to getting your Droid dancing in the "pinch to zoom" party. Once again produced by the good folks over at AllDroid, the patch substitutes the Droid's default browser with the Milestone's multitouch capable one -- and from the feedback we're seeing it does so very cleanly and painlessly, whether you're running Android 2.0.1 or 2.1. You'll still need to root your device first, and some background reading is advisable before jumping in, but then you should be clear for take-off into the world of multitouch browsing. Video evidence after the break.

Skype for Symbian enters beta
Posted on December 10, 2009 | No Comments
And no, we're not talking about Skype Lite, either -- a real, legitimate, native-code version of Skype has just hit beta for S60 3.1 and 3.2-based devices. Right now, 17 phones ranging from the E51 up to the N96 are supported -- all Nokias -- but more are promised by the time they get around to releasing a gold build. The app supports free Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G or WiFi, instant messaging, and file transfers, but one thing that it doesn't support is video calling, which makes Fring's recent release all that much more interesting. It can be installed over the air, so go ahead and grab it now -- unless you're using an i8910, in which case you can go sob quietly to yourself.Skype for Symbian enters beta originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 12:08:00 EST.
