Robocops to roam the streets of San Jose

According to the Mercury News, cops in San Jose will soon be wearing head-mounted video cameras to record their interaction with civilians. The devices will sit above their ears and they will be activated whenever they speak with a citizen or suspect. The videos will then be uploaded to a central server. Presumably these things turn off when the officers are in the toilet.
Why is this happening? Because people don't trust cops right now. The system, called AXON, can also attach to other parts of the body.

Nokia Image Space: like Google Maps Street View, but you’re doing the work
Posted on December 22, 2009 | No CommentsNokia's added an interesting new collaborative picture-sharing tool to its Beta Labs stable this week with the introduction of Image Space, which -- like our headline suggests -- is kind of like a crowdsourced Street View as best as we can tell. The idea is that you upload photos to your Flickr account from a GPS- and compass-enabled Nokia phone (the N97 and N97 Mini, for instance) and head on over to Nokia's tool, where the photo metadata is read and used along with others' shots to construct a three-dimensional view of the area. Of course, the key to the success of a product like this is mass buy-in, so c'mon, Nokia owners, these pictures aren't taking themselves -- get outside and start shooting. Joby makes an iPhone app: the Gorillacam

Joby, makers of the various Gorilla accessories -- the GorillaPod, the GorillaTorch, GorillaMobile, etc -- have just unveiled their first iPhone app: the Gorillacam. The free app provides a number of features to improve the usefulness of the iPhone camera, including a grid for rule-of-thirds shots, making the entire touchscreen a shutter button, photo sequences, and much more.

Google and Microsoft join I3A’s Camera Phone Image Quality Initiative
Posted on December 3, 2009 | No CommentsThe International Imaging Industry Association -- colloquially known as I3A -- announced today that Google's signed on as a member of the non-profit organization. They've also simultaneously announced that pre-existing member Microsoft has joined forces with Google on the Camera Phone Image Quality Initiative. What's that all about? The initiative, which also calls Motorola, Eastman Kodak, Nokia, and other members, is dedicated to creating the metrics needed to "produce an accurate and repeatable testing program for camera phone image quality." Considering the wild variances in quality among different cellphones, such formalized measurement techniques would surely be welcomed by everyone on planet earth.

iPhone camera mod for magnification: because you can
Posted on November 23, 2009 | No CommentsWe've thought before how nice it might be to have some powers of magnification on the iPhone's cam... but are we going to go out and mod our unit? Probably not, but that doesn't mean we can't admire someone else's work. Taking various lenses and attaching them to the lid of a jar, the modder quite carefully built a contraption that looks a little "hobo Steampunk" to us, but we're still fairly impressed with this little gadget. Another season, another Texas Instruments coprocessor for us to wonder about. For what feels like ages now, TI has been pumping out silicon that promises to bring high-def recording capabilities to cellphones, but by and large, most everything has been stuck at VGA or below. Oh sure, we've seen our first batch of 12 megapixel cameraphones, but it's not like those things are replacing DSLRs en masse. Bitterness aside, the OMAP-DM525 coprocessor is supposedly capable of bringing 20 megapixel imaging to handsets along with 720p video recording, while the OMAP-DM515 hits the ceiling at 12 megapixels. Of course, the DM525 won't actually be ready for volume production until sometime next year, but here's hoping a sample or two slips out at CES.

Sony seems to put a lot of emphasis on 3D, as far as the future direction of their TV and optical media divisions is concerned.
