OLEDs are the future: Canon buries development of SEDs

Those surface-conduction electron-emitter displays were around for quite a while, competing with FEDs (field emission displays) until Sony decided to pull the plug on the latter back in March last year. That gave one company, Canon, enough of a push to continue to believe in SED. Canon even filed new patents on SED technology in the US in May 2009. But that's over now (we kind of anticipated this as early as December 2008).

Geotagging is pretty popular these days, but for the most part you have to buy an additional hardware. JOBO makes one such device, the photoGPS, that's been around for a while. They just announced two new versions, photoGPS 2 and the photoGPS 4. The new models offer improved reception, battery life, and storage. All in all a worthy successor to their original product.

The 5D mk II 2.0.3 firmware was supposed to be the end-all solution for the Canon super camera. But it wasn't. It caused more issues not worth the enhanced movie mode it added. Canon of course of pulled the firmware from its site cause many 5D mk II owners to cry a little. Because, as everyone knows, Canon owners are notoriously emotional unlike the cool and collected Nikon crowd. But chin up 5D mk II owners, the proper firmware is now available.

.canon: Canon wants to establish its own top-level domain

Megalomania or genius marketing move? Canon seriously takes aim at becoming the world's first company with its own generic top-level domain (gTLD), namely ".canon". The new domain would join the likes of .com, .edu, .gov, .org, etc. (Wikipedia has the full list). The Japanese electronics giant announced [press release in English] its plan to acquire the rights for the domain from ICANN today.

After trying to find a way to remotely control their DSLRs, the clever hackers at HDRLabs couldn't really find anything that would do what they wanted. So what did they do? The Canon PowerShot G series have always been one of the best compact shooters available. See that pic above? I shot that back in 2003 with a G3. Beautiful, isn't? That's Camp Tapico in Northern Michigan, where I spent every summer of my teenage life. Anyway, word on the street is that Nikon wants some of the action that the G series has enjoyed all by itself for so long. Better late then never, Nikon.

(We'll be arriving in Las Vegas throughout the day today.) First up for me: new camcorders from Canon. Entry-level ones, too, so don't feel intimidated. You've got the HFR11, the HFR10, and the HFR100. They're basically souped up, HD versions of the previous FS series of entry-level cameras. Nothing wrong with HD.

Canon updates flagship HD camcorders with touchscreens (that’s it)

Canon is done with navigation nubs on its high-end camcorders. They have been replaced with fancy-pants touchscreens. (Hopefully the cams come with cleaning cloths!) But don't fret if you just purchased Canon' previous flagship HD cam. These three new models use the same image sensor as the previous models. It's mainly the touchscreen that's different. But they must be cool because all the cool kids love touchscreens.
