LG goes nouveau nostalgic with first US Mobile DTV devices
Posted on December 29, 2009 | No CommentsLG just announced its first commercial products for the fledgling US Mobile DTV standard approved in October. First up is what appears to be a DTV-ified LG Lotus clamshell -- a phone first introduced in 2008 but now capable of extracting digital TV from the aether with an assist from that telescoping antenna. Also set for a CES launch is that DP570MH portable DVD player that lets viewers watch up to 4-hours of ATSC-approved Mobile DTV broadcasts before heading back for a charge. LG's also promising more ATSC Mobile DTV devices from Dell (laptops), Kenwood, and others including in-car receivers all using LG's LG2160A ATSC-M/H tuner chip. Still, mobile antennas and DVD players... how can something so new feel so retro?

More competition is the color E-book market can only be a good thing. The Nook is just sort of in color, the Kindle is the 800 pound gorilla, no one knows what exactly Apple's got planned, and now there's this new guy Paradigm Shift, talking about launching a full-color e-book reader at CES. Bet they wish they'd come to market before the holidays.

Logic Wireless 150LGW projector phone reminds us of that Bolt we once saw
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No CommentsRemember the Bolt from CES 2009? Man, that was ages ago. If you'll recall, projector phones were actually all the rage for around 4.67 minutes at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, and ever since we've been dealt months of nothing alongside one lone ranger of something in the LG eXpo. Evidently Logic Wireless is hoping that we'll forget all about the Bolt that never shipped and instead focus on the next best thing: the 150LGW. Available for order now at Skymall (of all places), the projector phone looks significantly slimmer and more stylish than the company's first crack, and aside from the inbuilt PJ, there's also twin SIM card slots, dual cameras, an Office file viewer, quad-band GSM radio, Bluetooth and Symbian running the show. We aren't too sure we'd be willing to shell out $499 without any proof that this thing is worth its salt, but you can bet we'll be on the hunt for it once CES 2010 opens up next week.

Ford’s SYNC might change the way we use Internet in our cars

Ford is set to announce the next version of SYNC at CES this year, but an interesting feature leaked early. Apparently SYNC 3.0 will play nicely with USB modems and turn the car into a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot. The official announced hasn't been release just yet so keep in mind a key detail my be missing, but so far we like it. This solution is dramatically more versatile and consumer-friendly than the dedicated Autonet other manufacturers have been turning too.

WebOS 1.3.5 coming to CES: better performance and more app storage, says Palm CEO

Here's something to glean from Palm's recent quarterly call, besides the still less-than-profitable fiscal number, of course. CEO Jon Rubinstein divulged that yes, we will indeed be seeing webOS 1.3.5 during CES early next month. Even better, we got some insight into what we'll be expecting from the update: more application storage (hooray!), better WiFi / app performance, improved battery life, and "increase Pixi speed and responsiveness" -- interesting that Pixi is called out solo for that last one, but we're not about to read too much into that just yet. Greenpeace will be at CES cutting a promo on anti-green companies
Posted on December 18, 2009 | No CommentsI've inexplicably become CrunchGear's go-to green writer. If there's a “green” tech story out there, I'm on the scene. Why, I don't know, especially because my attitude toward the environment is, “Meh, I'm lucky if I hit 70 years old, what do I care?” Don't tell that to Greenpeace though. The activists made famous by that Seinfeld episode will be at next month's CES (as will all of your friendly neighborhood CrunchGear writers) to give the lowdown on what companies are green and what companies are a bunch of jerks.

A Verizon partnership seems plausible, if not likely -- but otherwise, your guess is as good as ours. Anyhow, keep it locked right here next month and you'll be finding out just as we do!
