Posted on June 17, 2010 | No Comments
We reported last week that two of Japan's top cell phone makers, Fujitsu and Toshiba, were in talks to merge their cell phone businesses. And today, we have the rumor confirmed. Under the agreement, Toshiba will spin off its handset unit and Fujitsu is expected to take the majority stake in the joint venture (between a whopping 70 and 80%, according to reports in Japanese media).

We reported last year that NEC, Hitachi and Casio were in negotiations to merge their cell phone operations to become Japan’s second biggest manufacturer, following Sharp. And the new company, which is called NEC Casio Mobile Communications and was established on May 1, just yesterday announced ambitious expansion plans.

Japan's second biggest mobile company KDDI today unveiled [JP] the 10 cell phones of their new line-up for this summer. The first of these models, the majority of which are waterproof (which seems to indicate a new trend in Japan's cell phone industry), will be rolled out in Japan as early as at the end of this month.
Here's the complete line-up.

Japan’s DoCoMo announces new mobile projector for cell phones
Posted on April 22, 2010 | No Comments
It's not that there's a shortage of mobile projectors, but when DoCoMo (Japan's biggest cell phone carrier) announces [JP] a model for its 55 million customers, it deserves a mention. DoCoMo specifically suggests using the F01 with Fujitsu's uber-cool "Separate Keitai", a cell phone that breaks into two parts (and that's currently available on the Japanese market only).

IS01: Sharp to roll out Android smartbook
Posted on March 30, 2010 | No Comments
There's just one Android phone currently available in Japan, one of the biggest mobile markets in the world. But the HTC Magic, which Japan's biggest telco, NTT Docomo, started distributing last summer, will soon be joined by the Sharp IS01 [JP] - which is not really a "smartphone", but rather being marketed as an MID or "smartbook" instead.

New technology heats up cell phones when callers get agitated
Posted on March 11, 2010 | No Comments
I can't think of too many use cases for this, but they did it: A team of researchers from the University of Tokyo (Japan's MIT if you will) has developed a technology that makes it possible to "physically" convey emotions from cell phone to cell phone. The key elements of the technology are a sensor and a Peltier device that's attached to the back of the phones.

Sausage iPhone stylus shipping to US
Posted on March 8, 2010 | No Comments
You may have seen the “Sausage Finger” iPhone photos making the rounds early last month. I could have sworn we posted it but I can’t seem to find it. Anyhoo, it was a photo of two guys on a South Korean subway car using little sausages to manipulate their iPhones while wearing gloves. Everyone had a chuckle and then we all moved on—UNTIL NOW!

How to make a busted iPhone beautiful
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No Comments
There’s an excellent how-to over in the MacRumors forums that details how an enterprising individual purchased a scratched up iPhone with a broken screen off of eBay and restored it to its former glory without sinking too much money into the project.

Quake 3, Android style
Posted on February 25, 2010 | No Comments
Quake 3 has been ported to Android. It looks slick, too (see video demo below). The project is called “kwaak3” and is based on Quake 3 ports to the iPhone and Nokia N900. The developer got everything up and running on a Motorola Milestone (a GSM Motorola Droid with multi-touch, basically) and makes use of the phone’s keyboard, “so it won’t work on your Nexus One or other phone at this point,” according to the project page.

Video: Streetfighter IV on the iPhone gets price and release date
Posted on February 23, 2010 | No Comments
I myself am in the "This will never work"-camp, but Japanese video game giant Capcom is preparing a special version of their hit title "Streetfighter IV" for the iPhone/iPod touch. The announcement was made last week, making the iPhone version the first on a mobile device (the arcade game has been ported to the PS3 and XBox 360 only so far).
And today, Gamepro was able to lay their hands on Streetfighter IV (see their video below), revealing the final version will feature a total of eight characters: Ryu, Ken, Guile, Blanka, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, M. Bison and Abel (the console games have 17 playable characters).
