Videos: Mobile robot RODEM
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No Comments
There's certainly no shortage of so-called mobility robots, but major Japanese robot maker tmsuk's offering seems to be quite cool. In fact, the RODEM (short for "Robot De Enjoy Mobility") is being pitched as a mix between robot, wheelchair and ultra-small vehicle (or "Universal Vehicle" [JP, PDF], in tmsuk's marketing language).

Live-action “Akira” is coming, and the Hughes brothers will direct it
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsOne of the best manga ever created, Akira, is going to the big screen. And this time, it won't be an anime (like the one from 1988) but a live-action film. We first reported about plans to shoot the live-action remake, whose rights were bought by Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, back in February 2008. The idea was scrapped a few months later, until New York Magazine wrote in February this year the studio is in negotiations with the Hughes Brothers (who directed "The Book Of Eli") to direct the movie.

Photos and videos: CrunchGear visits Japan’s biggest Otaku party (CGM Night)
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No Comments
Japan's most famous Otaku culture blogger Danny Choo invited video games/anime/manga/Cosplay/figures/maid cafe fanatics from all over the country last weekend, and about 200 showed up at Digital Hollywood University for the eighth "CGM Night" (here's my report on the last one).
The idea is to bring Otaku and geeks out of their rooms and socialize among people of their kind. Needless to say, I was one of them (I live in Tokyo).

Video: Meet Myon, Germany’s latest humanoid robot
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
Germany has churned out the one or the other humanoid in recent months, but Myon might actually be the coolest deutsche robot out there. The little guy stands 125cm tall and weighs 15kg. He was designed by Cologne-based design studio frackenpohl poulheim [GER] and developed at Berlin's Humboldt University as part of the European ALEAR (Artificial Language Evolution on Autonomous Robots) research project.

“Like”: Japanese venture begins accepting orders for new electric car
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
Japan's newest electric car isn't made by one of the nation's many major automakers, but sometimes it needs a venture to accelerate potentially positive developments in rather conservative industries. Boutique automaker Mitsuoka Motor has now begun accepting orders [JP, PDF] for "Like" [JP], a 5-seat electric car that's based on Mitsubishi Motors's i-MiEV (the Like was unveiled earlier this year).

He’s back: 60-foot Gundam is (almost) ready again
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
We spent quite a few posts on the uber-cool, gigantic Gundam statue that was erected in Tokyo Bay last year. The 60-foot robot statue was deconstructed in September, with Bandai quickly announcing plans to re-erect the big guy in Shizuoka soon. And now he's almost ready.

Video: Toshiba’s AC100 Tegra netbook runs on Android 2.1
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No Comments
Hot on the heels of the W100 dual touchscreen tablet, Toshiba also unveiled the AC100 today, a 10.1-inch netbook that runs on Android 2.1. One of the big selling points of the AC100, which is the company's first Android machine, is that it can remain in standby mode for up to seven days (the eight hours of battery life aren't too shabby either).

Libretto W100: Toshiba shows double touchscreen tablet (video)
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No Comments
What's better than a tablet with one touchscreen? A tablet with two touchscreens. That's at least what Toshiba must have thought when they cooked up the Libretto W100 with its dual 7-inch multi-touch displays (1,024×600 resolution and LED backlighting for both). There's no physical keyboard, but you'll get a virtual one with haptic response.

Ikaros: Photos of solar-powered “Space Yacht” in outer space
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No Comments
We first blogged about Ikaros, a solar powered "space yacht" developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in September last year. The idea was to use solar photons to propel satellites in outer space to boost energy-efficiency. That yacht was eventually launched on May 21, and now we have the first pictures of Ikaros moving through outer space.
