EVO 4G receives a Palm Pre inductive charging transplant (video)
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsOh yes, an HTC EVO has been modded with the inductive charging coil ripped from the still beating heart of a Palm Pre. The 30 minute soldering project does have the side effect of rendering compass apps useless while creating a slight bulge in the battery cover. Other than that, it just works -- or so says the creator. See the modded EVO get busy with a Palm Touchstone and do what yours can't in the video after the break.Continue reading EVO 4G receives a Palm Pre inductive charging transplant (video)

Orange Power Wellies convert all that dancin’ to juice for your mobile
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No Comments
We're coming upon festival season again, and you know what that means -- Orange is dragging their solar energy tent to Glastonbury. This year, prepare to charge your mobile phone while checking out the acts at the John Peel Stage, courtesy of your new Power Wellies. Developed in partnership with GotWind, the soles of the boots collect heat all day and, using something called the Seebeck effect, this heat is converted into electricity -- electricity that can be used to recharge your phone later that night. As if you needed an excuse to dance in the first place! PR after the break.

Hidden gadget charging station could save marriages
Posted on December 21, 2009 | No Comments
I have what I consider to be a modest number of gadgets lying around the house. The exact number is usually in flux, depending on what I'm reviewing for CrunchGear. Nonetheless, there's almost always something sitting in my living room plugged into an outlet to charge. My lovely wife just barely tolerates this, and regularly asks if I need to have all these things lying about. She would love to see me start using a hidden gadget charging station, like the one pictured here. Nestled under the lovely fake plant are a number of connectors to charge gadgets, while keeping them politely out of sight.

RIM comes onboard with the Wireless Power Consortium
Posted on December 3, 2009 | No Comments
Look's like the Wireless Power Consortium can add another one of the big boys onto its list of powerful allies. Research in Motion's come on board as a member of the organization, which now includes 21 manufacturers. The Wireless Power Consortium's noble quest, you'll remember, is to develop a wireless charging standard, which it calls the Qi. The group also announced simultaneously that it's successfully finished the second round of prototype testing. RIM's support is adds further hope to the pursuit of said standard, after Nokia joined the cause in October.RIM comes onboard with the Wireless Power Consortium originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Dec 2009 20:03:00 EST. Support for universal micro-USB phone chargers grows with ITU approval
Posted on October 23, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Accessories
The entire wireless industry has been congealing around micro-USB as a universal charging standard for a while now, and we've taken yet another important step toward completely ridding the world of bizarre proprietary connectors (you know what we're talking about, Samsung) with ITU ratification this week. The UN-backed International Telecommunication Union isn't just making the move to make our lives a little less hellish, though -- it's also a strategic environmental move on a couple fronts, since universal chargers mean consumers will be able to hold on to a single charger over the life of several phones and modern chargers are far more power efficient than models that are even just a couple years old. The ITU move isn't binding or compulsory, but there's enough momentum behind micro-USB at this point that it's pretty much going to happen for any phone you'd ever consider buying going forward, and many of the big players have already hopped on the bandwagon. We won't lie, we won't miss the days of buying a $40 car charger that powers, like, two LG models.

All hail the ten-armed USB charging cable
Posted on August 26, 2009 | No Comments
Aaaand here we have the only charging cable you'll ever need. Is it a tangled mess waiting to happen? Perhaps. But you could safely misplace most, if not all, of your other USB charging cables. Plus, it looks like a sea monster!
