Rejoice user! Devin won't be keeling over from auto-eroticasphyxiation after all. The TRON controllers that he saw at E3 and threatened to hold his breath over? Well, they are going to be for sale. To be honest, I haven't considered replacing my stock Xbox 360 controllers until this point, but now I'm afraid I have no choice. -

Posted on May 9, 2010 | No CommentsWe knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as "Wii Controller IME") was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn't expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon. Not that we're kvetching or anything -- and in fact, we'd argue that this landed at a perfect time for you hard-workin' Android owners to give this all a spin over the weekend. Jump on past the break for a look at the setup procedure as well as bona fide proof that a Wiimote and Android can indeed work together for the greater good. Mind those coconuts, though.

Wii Classic Pro controller showing up at GameStop

Here's some retro gaming goodness, GameStop has all but confirmed the White Classic Controller Pro for the Wii, with a ship date of April 1st. This is of course patterned off of the GameCube controller and has been clamored for by gamers ever since the Wii came out. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

Puyocon: Ball-shaped, squeezable input interface (videos)

The Puyocon wants to be for PCs what the Wiimote became for game consoles: An alternative input interface that doesn't require pressing buttons but arm movements from users in order to control what's going on on the screen. The small device is the brainchild of the so-called Entertainment Computing Laboratory [JP] at Japan's Tsukuba University.
The Puyocon is a ball-shaped, soft and wireless controller that users can roll, throw, squeeze or move with both hands in order to trigger an action on the screen (for example, moving a cursor around). It features a total of 14 pressure sensors, a three-way acceleration sensor and Bluetooth.

Posted on December 30, 2009 | No CommentsShould you be the sort of person who doesn't mind fiddling around with alpha level software, you'll definitely want to know about the BlueMaemo Bluetooth emulator. Available via the Extras-Devel repository on your N900, this app allows the device to mimic other Bluetooth gadgets, such as keyboards, mice, and yes indeedy, gaming controllers. Its developer Valério Domingos humbly points out that the purpose of connecting up to a PS3 is purely for menu navigation and easier text input, though we've no doubt a few hardcore Nokia loyalists will try using this in an action game to prove the N900's superiority. You may follow Valério and his ongoing refinement of the app in the Maemo.org link below, or you can jump past the break to see the full controller layout and an instructional video on how to hook things up -- it's in Italian, but you should be able to grasp what's going on senza problemi.

Posted on December 10, 2009 | No CommentsThe iPod touch (and technically the iPhone as well) may well be "the funnest iPod ever," but it can also be the most awkward device to hold for prolonged gaming sessions, nor have previous attempts made things any better. The iHandstick might just do the job -- while we can't credit them for originality, this hollow cousin of the Playstation controller may satisfy owners of iPod touch 2G / 3G and iPhone 3G / 3GS. Remember, it should give a similar grip enjoyed by millions of Playstation gamers over the last 15 years. The only doubt left is whether our thumbs can easily reach the virtual buttons on the screen. Taking up Steve Jobs' war on buttons, a group of grad students at Japan's Keio University have put together a comprehensive robot control interface that relies solely on finger swipes, taps, and presses. By employing the iPhone's built-in accelerometer and multitouch screen, the robot can replicate a humanistic walking motion, perform sidesteps and, when called upon, kick a football with gusto and presumed passion. Old-timey grenade-shaped Atari controller brings us back

If the action couldn't happen on screen then it surely could happen off screen. This odd, made-in-Denmark controller was called the Terminator and was shaped like a very realistic grenade - complete with pin.
I remember the old style "stick" controllers with the triangular head so I guess this is similar. You'd hold this in your hand and move the top with your thumb. Sadly you'd also probably look like you were ready to blow up the computer lab, a sad side effect of these frightened times.
