Blood sugar testing game and accessory coming for the Nintendo DS

Childhood diabetes sucks, there's no way around it. Testing is annoying and uncomfortable for adults, much lets kids, and the testing technology isn't exactly what you'd call fun or interesting. Bayer is trying to make it better though, by creating a fun way to test blood glucose levels using a Nintendo DS.

Bring the retro-bowling arcade experience home

People love arcade games, and have since the 50's. Some of the earliest games were based off of other recreations, like for example bowling. I remember playing one of these in the arcade in town during my youth, but it never held the attraction to me like Battle Zone or Asteroids did.

New firmware update: Sony readies PS3 for future 3D games

Sony, which just recently scrapped Linux as an alternate OS for the PS3 with firmware update v3.21, released v3.30 today. The mandatory update neither brings Linux back nor features anything substantial per se (it gives you new sorting options for trophies). But with it, Sony readies the console for future 3D games and other 3D content.

The G-Mate Gun Overlord – Real or Fake?

We're not entirely sure this thing exists in real life. The G-mate Gun Overlord just seems a bit too glorious. Even the video after the jump isn't enough proof. If it is real though, watch out, it could be awesome. Unless of course it's not and actually really lame.

  • Researchers: Playing video games before bedtime doesn’t keep you up all night

Researchers: Playing video games before bedtime doesn’t keep you up all night

I remember when I was a kid playing the NES and I'd always play until about nine or ten at night and then go to bed and read until 2AM or so. While you could feasibly correlate the fact that playing games kept me up - my grandma always did and she said I'd always get too "excited" when I played SMB or something else equally thrilling - apparently there is no causation between the two. According to a Flinders University study, gaming did not cause sleeplessness or sleep impairment. The study focused on teens with a mean age of 16, however, and the researchers found that younger teens may be more impaired by thrilling games. They played CoD 4: Modern Warfare, incidentally, so it doesn't get more thrilling than that.

Video: Japanese company shows Super Mario Bros. on Kindle emulator

We've shown you an N64 emulator running on a hacked iPad just a few days ago, and now it's time to see how Super Mario Bros. would look like on a Kindle. And the short answer is that the 1985 NES game would look awful: it's slow, it's in black and white only, it has no sound, it's buggy (since when can Mario kill Goombas by bumping into them?), and apparently, you can't even control Mario properly. Not that this is surprising.

This is something gadget modder Ben Heck might have thought about, but if yes, Japanese game peripheral maker HORI (which also sells stuff in the US) was faster this time. The company today announced [JP] a portable LCD screen, which, once attached to the top of a PS3 Slim, makes the console (somewhat) portable.
