US Cellular adds HTC Desire and BlackBerry Bold in August, teases BlackBerry 9670 for ‘later this year’
Posted on June 25, 2010 | No Comments
We were extremely close to cramping our sarcasm muscle with all the faux excitement we had to drum up for the 3.2-inch Acclaim, but US Cellular has now come back with word that it'll soon count HTC's Desire among its roster of phones. The Desire, which is mooted to be coming to other smaller carriers like Cellular South, will debut in August alongside the BlackBerry Bold. We're more excited, however, to find US Cellular promising it'll offer "a BlackBerry flip smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard" later this year. That sounds like RIM's slightly unorthodox 9670 to us, and will probably form the second part of the BB maker's pledged introduction of two new handsets. US Cellular's 2010 device lineup refresh will be completed with a pair more Androids, courtesy of LG and Samsung. The former is said to have a "large touch screen and slide-out, ergonomically-designed QWERTY keyboard," while the latter is only described as "highly-anticipated." Not too shabby.US Cellular adds HTC Desire and BlackBerry Bold in August, teases BlackBerry 9670 for 'later this year' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 05:41:00 EST. HTC Desire in the US pipeline for ’select regional operators’ this August
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsSince neither T-Mobile nor AT&T have ponied up a branded, high-end Android device yet (though the former is almost certainly about to announce the Galaxy S), we were particularly chuffed to get the news from HTC today that it'll be bringing the lovely Desire to US shores through carriers in August. Thing is, it won't be coming through any of the big guys -- instead, it's destined for "select regional operators," and HTC is quick to note that the Hero has been "well received... in regional markets," so we imagine some of those same little guys will be scooping the Desire. We're told to wait for word from specific carriers on pricing and technical details, but the branded Desires have been confirmed to sport a 1GHz Snapdragon and Sense atop Android 2.1, two of the most important line items -- now let's just make sure we're already cracking on a Froyo update, yeah?HTC Desire in the US pipeline for 'select regional operators' this August originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 12:39:00 EST. Telus teasing a June 8 launch — the HTC Triumph, perhaps?
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsSo the popular rumor going around at the moment is that Telus is on the verge of releasing a Canada-flavored HTC Desire rebranded as the "Triumph," which seems pretty reasonable considering that the carrier has made no effort to launch the Nexus One and undoubtedly wants to pimp as many awesome phones as it can right now to drum up usage of its nascent HSPA network. This all lines up nicely with the fact that Telus' home page is now teasing an "unleashing" on June 8, less than two weeks from today. Sounds like a win -- provided they can keep the three-year contract price in check, of course.

Flash 10.1 on Froyo goes tete-a-tete with Flash Lite 4 on Eclair: butter vs. stutter (video)
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsBelieve it or not, your newly-upgraded Nexus One isn't the first Android smartphone to have Adobe Flash video capability, nor even the first to play said content on a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU -- Europe's been rocking the HTC Desire since April, which sports a little something called Flash Lite even on the older Android 2.1 OS. Phone guitar: iPhone OS, Windows Mobile and Android got all night to set the world right (video)
Posted on May 8, 2010 | No CommentsWhat can you do when no one's got a phone to jam with you? Why, you can be a geeky one-man band, of course! Web developer Steffest (just one name, like Sting or Madonna) managed to do just that by strapping a couple of Android devices (possibly an Archos 5 and a HTC Desire), a couple of WinMo handhelds (looks like a HP iPAQ h1940 and a HTC Touch Diamond), and an iPod touch on top of a portable speaker. All this just for a forthcoming presentation on mobile cross development -- Steffest had to painstakingly write the same audio program "in Java for Android, in C# for Windows Mobile and in Objective-C for iPhone." Oh, and it doesn't just end there -- turns out this dude can alsoplucktap away a good Neil Diamond classic on this five-way nerd-o-strummer. Get on board and check out the video after the break.Phone guitar: iPhone OS, Windows Mobile and Android got all night to set the world right (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 08 May 2010 04:58:00 EST. ‘Black’ HTC Desire comes to Orange UK, sells out in a flash
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No CommentsWe'll be perfectly honest with you: we're not seeing what's "black" about the front of the Desire that Orange UK is now selling, but it insists that the phone is indeed devoid of color; we suspect they're actually just referring to the back, for which the description seems more accurate -- but that would make it no different than any other Desire being sold around the world. What does that mean? Basically, we think it means these guys need to get their eyesight checked. Spec-wise, this is the same Desire you'll find elsewhere... if you can find it, that is -- it sold out in short order on Orange's site since its launch a few days ago, no doubt a side effect of the customer euphoria caused by the realization that they can get a 1GHz Snapdragon running Android 2.1 with Sense on a WVGA display for free on contract. In the meantime, you might want to sniff around stores.
Update: Turns out the real, actual, live Orange-branded Desire is black, despite the imagery on Orange's site. We're working on pictures -- stay tuned. Thanks, everyone!'Black' HTC Desire comes to Orange UK, sells out in a flash originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 05 May 2010 16:33:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Verizon’s DROID ERIS by HTC does Android and keeps it cheap
Posted on November 5, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, Android
Verizon is making no secret about which Android device it wants to make waves this week -- that'd be the DROID from Motorola -- but there's another model that'll be available the same day with one-tenth the fanfare: HTC's DROID ERIS. Codenamed Desire ahead of launch, the phone is essentially Verizon's custom remix of the venerable Hero as found on Sprint and various GSM carriers around the world, featuring a 5 megapixel camera, 3.2-inch capacitive display, WiFi, 3.5mm headphone jack, and microSD expansion up to 16GB. Check it out in your local store hiding somewhere in the shadow of the DROID starting Friday for $99.99 on contract after a $100 mail-in rebate, which -- if you can forgo a physical keyboard, faster processor, and high-res display -- works out to a cool hundred less than Moto's entry.Verizon's DROID ERIS by HTC does Android and keeps it cheap originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 08:45:00 EST. November 6: stores open at 6AM for DROID, Droid Eris?
Posted on October 30, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Android
So, you're a prospective Moto DROID customer. You've soaked up the review, studied the manual, and even built your own cardboard dock in anticipation of the big November 6 street date. What's next, you ask? Well, set your alarm early -- if the rumors are true, Verizon Wireless will be opening its retail shops at 6:00 AM sharp. Of course, all that is in addition to the Droid Eris, which is rumored to be making its debut on that auspicious date as well. So what's the plan, guys -- wake up early or camp out the night before?

HTC Droid Eris allegedly already in stock — if you know who to talk to
Posted on October 28, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, Android
Officially, the Droid Eris launches on November 6. Okay, officially officially, we don't know when it launches, because Verizon hasn't even yet admitted that it exists -- but we've got enough evidence built at this point to say with confidence that it's hitting shelves in all sales channels that day. We've just been tipped off, though, that the phone is already sitting in warehouses just waiting to ship out, and experienced Verizon customers know that you can occasionally dupe a rep into shipping you a SKU -- if you know it. Well, we've got it right here: ADR6200VW. Good luck, folks, and let us know how it goes.

HTC Droid Eris priced at $99 for Verizon?
Posted on October 28, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, Android
Sure, the DROID's getting all the attention today, but you might recall that it's not the only thing Verizon has in the pipe has it preps its first Android assault -- HTC's got the Droid Eris in there somewhere, too, which is shaping up to be little more than a branded Hero in a slightly different shell. Against the insanely-spec'd DROID, that may not be a drool-worthy proposition, but fortunately, it's looking like Verizon is going to be pursuing an aggressive tiered pricing strategy that might allow these phones to coexist in peace and everlasting harmony: unlike the DROID's $199 sticker, gdgt has it on good authority that the Droid Eris will run a hundie less at $99. That spanks Sprint's version which currently runs $179.99, but hey, if this means we're going to see a price war down in the 528MHz trenches for the Android midrange, we're all for it.

Droid Eris turns up in Verizon training course
Posted on October 27, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless, Android
Again, we have no idea why Verizon is burying the launch of the HTC Droid Eris alongside the Motorola Droid tomorrow (well, apart from the slow CPU and older Android build) but if you had any doubts that Big Red was going to launch this riff on the Hero, well, these screenshots of the employee training course should put those to rest. Interestingly, the buttons and logo placement are slightly different from the pic that was leaked to gdgt, but this version certainly looks like what Eric Schmidt was holding the other day, so we're thinking this is the final iteration. We'll see what's what tomorrow, we suppose.

Verizon’s Droid is a series, not just a phone; Droid Eris coming from HTC
Posted on October 23, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Android
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Verizon_Droid_is_a_SERIES_of_phones_HTC_Droid_Eris_is_next'; We just got some wild information from a trusted source about Verizon's Android strategy, and let's just say this shakes things up a little bit. Here are the big takeaways:- Droid is the brand name being applied to Verizon's Android devices. It isn't a single phone.
- The Sholes -- the phone we've been calling the Droid so far -- may simply be known as the Droid.
- HTC's Desire will be coming to market as the "Droid Eris." (Allow us to save you the Wikipedia lookup -- Eris is the Greek goddess of strife.) Interestingly, it's already up on gdgt as such.
- Droid Eris will be released -- not announced, actually released -- on November 6. In all likelihood, it will not be announced or shown at Verizon's October 28 event -- that will probably just be for the Sholes.

HTC Desire with Sense UI and Verizon branding spotted
Posted on October 22, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless, Android
Verizon's on a roll with Android handsets these days, first with the heavily-advertised Motorola Droid and the reclusive / unannounced Calgary, and now with this fleeting glimpse of Android hardware progenitor HTC. Yes, it's got 3G (or the Verizon equivalent of it), Sense UI, a trackball just barely discernible on the bottom, and from what Boy Genius Report is saying no physical keyboard whatsoever -- all virtual. We're definitely sporting a Hero vibe, but really, would it really have too hard to find a decent light source for this shot?HTC Desire with Sense UI and Verizon branding spotted originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 16:22:00 EST.
