    Casio is no stranger to teaming up with major toy makers, licensing super-cute cartoon characters, using them on existing digital camera models and offering up super-cute limited editions to a fanatic fan base. After cartoon cats Doraemon and Hello Kitty, it's now time for Rilakkuma, an adorable teddy bear. The result is the Casio Exilim Rilakkuma edition that was announced [JP] today.

    In March last year, Pentax unveiled the X70, a 12MP "hybrid" digital camera with 24x optical zoom that currently sells on Amazon for $380. And today Pentax in Tokyo announced [press release in English] the successor, the X90. As to be expected, the new model has been upgraded in some areas.

    Pentax released their seventh generation SLR, the K-7, last summer, and it turned out to be a great camera. And today Hoya Pentax in Japan announced [press release in English] a limited edition of the K-7 (simply dubbed "Limited Silver") whose main selling points are a silver-colored body and a “golden section ratio” focusing screen.

    Two weeks ago, we reported about Amazon starting to sell white and red versions of Panasonic's excellent GF1 digital camera in America (through a reseller). And today, Panasonic in Japan announced [JP] the camera will be available in two more body colors, namely "blade" silver and "fairy" pink.

    It's Stussy's 30th birthday next year, and for some strange reason the fashion company collaborated with Japanese electronics maker Ricoh to celebrate the occasion in the form of a Stussy-branded digital camera [JP]. Technically, Ricoh didn't change anything in the GR DIGITAL III the Stussy camera is based on (and which was released in August this year), meaning the new exterior design will most likely attract hardcore Stussy fans or camera collectors only.

    An easy to use digital camera that automatically uploads pictures to various websites without using a USB cable, a memory card reader or Eye-Fi? If that's something you've always wanted, the Cerevo Cam, made by Tokyo-based startup Cerevo [JP], might be the right device for you. After months of development work (the camera was completely designed from scratch and in-house), the shoot-and-upload camera is finally available in Japan. To recap, the big idea here is to simplify the process of uploading and sharing pictures online. Cerevo Cam users can send pictures directly from the device to the corresponding photo management site (dubbed Cerevo Life), mail addresses or to a number of web services - even when the camera is turned off (a feature that Eye-Fi doesn't offer). The so-called "Networked Camera" detects Wi-Fi spots and transfers pictures automatically without you needing to take it out of your bag. You can choose at which time(s) the upload should take place or initiate this yourself from the menu. The auto upload function, probably the most important feature, worked flawlessly during my test (Cerevo gave me a sample for a few days). Alternatively, you can use a 3G modem with it (to be connected through USB).

    Tokyo-based Kenko-Tokina, normally known for its camera accessories, has announced a cute Disney-themed digital camera [JP] for the Japanese market today. Spec-wise, this 8MP point-and-shoot camera isn't anything special, but that's what you'd expect from a camera whose case shows Mickey Mouse giving Minnie a bucket of hearts.

    The Pentax K-x was announced last month, and it seems to be a very decent entry-level camera. We already reported the device will be available in a few different colors in Japan, while the US only gets black, white, and red models. And today Pentax said in Tokyo [JP], they are ready to roll out a very special version of the K-x, which is a particularly colorful model inspired by the so-called Kore Ja Nai robo toy [JP].

    I just came back from the CNET Japan Innovation Conference 2009 [JP] in Tokyo, where Cerevo, currently one of the most ambitious tech start-ups in Japan, showed its self-developed digital camera aimed at heavy social media users for the first time. The company has just seven employees (two of them are part-timers) but big plans: Cerevo intends to dramatically simplify the process of uploading and sharing pictures online by providing both an extra-easy to use camera (the "CerevoCam") and a photo sharing site ("CerevoLife") specifically geared towards owners of that camera. And the company wants to bring its idea in front of a global audience.

    Ricoh in Japan today unveiled the CX2 [find the press release in English below], an update to the CX1 that went on sale in March this year. And they upgraded quite a lot of the main specs. You still get a 9.29MP CMOS sensor, but the burst rate at maximum resolution is at 5fps now (up from 4) and Ricoh also improved the optical zoom from 7.1 to 10.7.

    Casio Japan unveiled [JP] two new Exilim point-and-shoot cameras today, the EX-Z450 and the EX-Z90. The main selling point of the devices is the ability to detect objects (not only human beings) and to then automatically set the focus and exposure area to give you high-quality pictures. The EX-Z90 can be considered weaker than the Z450. It features a 12.1MP sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, 3x optical zoom, an ISO range of 64 to 1,600, an SDHC/SD memory card slot and 35.7MB of internal memory. The camera weighs 102g and will be available in gold, silver, pink, blue and black (release date in Japan: September 11, price: $210).

    Also announced today from Pentax are the P80 and E80 digital cameras. The 12-megapixel P80 is capable of recording HD video (720p) at 30fps and features an improved face detection function to recognize your mug even when it’s at an angle. Said function can see up to 32 faces in about 0.03 seconds. An ISO of 6400 should help in low light situations. The P80 will be available in September for $200.

    Three new cameras from Panasonic inbound. Finally, someone besides Samsung is claiming a world’s first. Claiming the hat today is Panasonic with the Lumix ZR1 digital camera. The latest Lumix features a 0.3mm thin ashperical lens, which is a world’s first. Other notable features include a 25mm ultra-wide-angle, 8x optical zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens and a start-up time of 1.1 seconds. The ZR1 will be available in September for $280 in black, blue, silver and red.
