Kobo launches e-reader app for Android
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsKobo -- perhaps best known for its e-reader tie-up with Borders -- is bringing its platform and bookstore to Android, beating bigger players like Amazon to the game. If you've already got a Kobo account, you can just log in and get instant access to your already-purchased books, but if you're new, you can buy stuff right from your phone; it supports ePub and counts more than two million titles to its library (some of which are free). Strangely, Kobo is circulating a picture of what appears to be a Nokia 5800 with its Android announcement -- but if you can get past that, the app should be available in the Market right now. Apple rolling iBooks out across iOS 4 devices, get your Winnie the Pooh now
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsNo shock and awe here, Apple's already given us plenty of warnings, but we thought we'd drop you a friendly note to say that if you've upgraded to iOS 4 early, your copy of Winnie the Pooh is flying at you right this minute. Tipsters points out that they get a notification encouraging them to download the heretofore iPad-exclusive iBooks app, though they're finding they have to do it via their desktop iTunes client rather than over the air. Ah well, Apple's probably being extra cautious with moving those big wooden bookshelves into the smaller dimensions of your iPhone or iPod touch. We've not been able to get the app running on our iPhone 3G, so perhaps this is another of those features you're not going to be able to enjoy on older hardware -- we hope it's just us though.

Kindle DX failing out of Darden Business School

According to Ars Technica, Darden Business School students are unhappy with the Amazon Kindle DX in terms of academic usefulness. That's not to say that they're down on the DX in general: there's pretty high support amongst Darden students for the DX as a personal e-reader. It's just not quite the classroom supplement that Darden administration had hoped it would be.

Fujitsu to unveil improved color e-paper screen

Fujitsu Laboratories announced today that they will be unveiling a new version of their color electronic paper display at the company’s Fujitsu Forum exhibition in Tokyo next week. The new screen is a supposed to be a third brighter and has a contrast ratio of 7:1, three times that of the previous model. These improvements are mostly due to the use of a new liquid crystal material with superior reflective characteristics.

enTourage eDGe dualbook gets deals with academia

The enTourage eDGe dualbook made its official debut at CES last week, along with lots of other e-book readers, dual-screen laptops, and more. We mentioned the eDGe book store, but that book store is gaining usefulness with the announcement of deals with publishers McGraw Hill, Oxford University Press and John Wiley & Sons, which will bring a number of academic texts to the dualbook. And enTourage has just inked a deal with Blackboard, a leading e-learning platform. More details inside.

The Owen E1 E-Book reader brings some sexy curves to e-readers

E-readers don't always have to be stark slate's of modern art and the Owen E1 E-Book is anything but. You just know by looking at it that it's comfy to use and should fit into more pockets thanks to its rounded edges and smallish 5-inch screen. But it doesn't matter, you probably won't be able to buy it anytime soon.

The US e-reader market is about to get one more player when Dulin's Books brings its Boox 60 reader to the States in the middle of January. But even though it packs a lot of tech into its shell like W-Fi, Wacom technology, and a Webkit browser, chances are it won't ever make it mainstream thanks to the Kindle, Nook, and Reader.

Posted on December 14, 2009 | No CommentsWe all now know that Kindle is more than an e-book for Amazon -- it's an entire digital content platform with aims on world domination, which explains why the company has felt more than comfortable releasing software-based readers for other platforms. To that end, they've announced that Kindle for iPhone is now ready for download in over 60 additional countries, which probably overlaps as a pretty beefy subset of the list of countries to which the actual Kindle is shipping. And, unlike the real thing, you'll actually be able to browse the full web with your iPhone -- not to say that HTML on an E Ink display was ever a very satisfying experience to start.

Tire maker Bridgestone shows world’s first flexible e-book reader

Tire maker Bridgestone isn't the first company that comes to mind when thinking about electronic paper, but the company has been experimenting in this field for quite some time now. Today, Bridgestone claimed that it has developed the world's first flexible e-book reader [JP]. The device, which is pictured above, uses electronic paper (instead of, say, an LCD) and will display the content on the screen even after you turn it off.
