Nike’s giant LED screen in Johanesburg has people Tweeting support for their favorite World Cup stars

Looks like Nike is up to quite a bit more in South Africa than making sure Landon Donovan (and the rest of Team USA) is well-dressed while taking first place in Group C. (Fingers crossed!) I just got word that the company has constructed the biggest interactive LED screen in the whole of Africa. It's on the Life Centre skyscraper that's in Johannesburg. Now, what would you want to do with an giant interactive LED screen in the middle of a major city?

Cristiano Ronaldo re-launches online presence in time for big game tomorrow: Facebook, YouTube, and more!

The eyes of the world will be looking upon Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo tomorrow as he attempts to single-handedly take his country past the opening round of the World Cup. (Will Didier Drogba have anything to say about that? We'll see!) Just in time for Cristiano's moment in the sun: the launch of his official Facebook page, YouTube channel, and the re-launch of CristianoRonaldo.com! That's right: while Mr. Real Madrid is on the field in South Africa trying to break down the Côte d'Ivoire defense, you can send him kind words of encouragement via the magic of the Internet and social networks.

iPhone OS 4 to include Facebook video uploads?

We already knew that Apple was likely ratcheting up the social networking integration in iOS 4 -- that is, if the addition of Linked Contacts and .plist entries referring to Facebook means anything (and it probably does). Adding further flame to the fire, the gang at 9to5Mac.com have dug up a bit of code that appears to handle video exporting to the popular social networking site. As near as we can tell, users will be able to send files at 480 x 480, 30 FPS -- and since Facebook is already using HTML5, you won't have that pesky Steve Jobs / Flash thing to worry about.

That’s what you get when you click random links: Facebook scam promises nude photos of Paramore’s Hayley Williams

Matt invited us to a Facebook party last week, something along the lines of "CLICK HERE FOR A FREE IPAD~!" Now, I knew this was malware-related because I know Matt knows I wouldn't want an iPad—free or otherwise. Clearly something smelled fishy here. The point is, even so-called techies can be the victim of malware. There's a new scam going around Facebook right now that, while not malicious right now, could well mutate into something not very nice with the flick of a switch.

How has the exciting world of technology changed since the last World Cup? Let us count the ways!

A little birdie told me that the World Cup begins in just a few weeks, on June 11, 2010, in South Africa. Four years prior saw Italy lift the trophy in Germany, beating France on penalties. Zinedine Zidane also headbutted Marco Materazzi that day—an immense event in Internet history. A lot of things have changed since that day in Berlin, a lot of things that will shock and amaze you. For example, did you know that Facebook was still only open to college and high school students the moment Fabio Grosso smashed the ball past Fabien Barthez? So, what else has changed between then and now?

  • Nokia updates N900 to version 1.2 in UK, closes door on MeeGo

Nokia updates N900 to version 1.2 in UK, closes door on MeeGo

You've overclocked it and hacked it to run OS X and Android, now you can return your N900 to its native Maemo 5 OS with the launch of a version 1.2 software update. The V10.2010.19-1 bump now available in the UK (global on Wednesday) packs several enhancements including face-to-face video calling, improved Ovi Maps, and a better email experience with bundled Facebook IM Chat and the ability to accept or decline event invitations from the inbox. You'll also see a number of new games when the Ovi Store switches over on Thursday.

And after much speculation, Nokia's also admitting that MeeGo will not be officially supported on the N900 once the Intel / Nokia OS is device ready. Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo OS, however, as demonstrated by today's update. Regardless, we're sure that the N900's active fan-base will deliver a MeeGo update outside of official channels, especially since the N900 is already being used as a platform for ARM-based MeeGo development.

    [Thanks, Pasu]

Facebook launches free mobile access site for emerging markets… and Denmark

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Facebook_launches_free_mobile_access_for_emerging_markets'; Following in the footsteps of Coca-Cola, Facebook is seeking to feed your addiction with a new zero version of its online service. 0.facebook.com leads users to a stripped down, text-only version of the social site, which will incur no data charges from your carrier. Of course, you won't be able to access any other sites or rich media without paying for it, but at least the core functionality of reading your friends' witty status updates and writing satirical responses will be there free of charge. This service is being rolled out primarily in the so-called emerging markets, though more mature environments like Belgium, Denmark and Finland are also present on the list (available after the break). SFR in France, 3 in the UK, and Australia's Telstra are also going to be joining in soon. Guess it's just a matter of finding a pliable carrier to accede to offering the minimal bandwidth necessary in exchange for being Liked by Facebookers.

Erick Tseng leaves Google and Android… for Facebook

Looks like Google's Android team is being shaken up a little: senior product manager Erick Tseng just announced on Twitter that he's leaving for a new position at Facebook. You might remember Erick from his appearance on The Engadget Show and a brief video we did with him at CES -- he was an instrumental part of the Android team, and a pretty great interview to boot. We'll see how Google decides to fill his shoes, but for now let's wish Erick luck with the new gig -- we're sure he's got a million new friend requests coming his way.

All that talk of UFCnot “getting” the Internet? Yeah, it's time to put that idea to rest. The company's longtime TV partner, SpikeTV, launched ultimatefighter.com earlier today, a place where mixed martial arts fans can watch the entire Ultimate Fighter library online. For free. Let that sink in—still think Dana White hates the Internet? In addition to serving up all 231 fights in the show's history, fans can also interact with each other on social networking services like Twitterand Facebook. Not a bad job, really.

Facebook campaign demands Portugal soccer team rock mustaches for the World Cup

Most social media campaigns stinks on ice. I think the one exception to that ironclad fact was the recent I'm With Coco meme, which I'm not even sure you could call a social media campaign. This one, though, this one totally is. It's called "Queremos a Selecção de Bigode no Mundial!" It's a growing movement to get the entire Portuguese national soccer team to grow mustaches. I've taken to calling the movement the Portuguese Mustache Federation, which, conveniently enough, doubles as a fantastic indie rock band name.
