This weekend make your own compressed air rocket
Posted on April 23, 2010 | No Comments
I've always loved the compressed air rocket. I bought my son one of the pre-made ones at a science museum and it broke on first flight, which was pretty frustrating. Had I known about this MAKE video, however, I would have built my son one from scratch.
You technically don't need more that 25 cents worth of hardware for this thing, but getting some of these parts might be cost a bit more. Here is this how-to PDF and here's the original article.

Watch the world’s tallest robot Tsutenkaku in action (weird video)
Posted on March 23, 2010 | No Comments
We've covered Tsutenkaku, a Japanese robot that looks like a tower to promote tourism in the city of Osaka, just last week. Japan’s giant Gundam statue returns, this time armed with a saber
Posted on March 22, 2010 | No Comments
The giant Gundam statue that protected Tokyo last summer was so cool that we covered it multiple times. In September 2009, Bandai (the company responsible for the marketing coup) decided to retire Gundam once and for all.
But five months later, in December 2009, the city of Shizuoka (some 125 miles west of Tokyo) announced it plans to re-erect the statue in July this year. And now it has come to light that it will really happen [JP] (on the 24th of July, Gundam’s 30th birthday, to be more exact). Shizuoka is the city where most of the Gundam plastic models come from.

“Camera-man”: This is what Pentax wants your camera to look like
Posted on March 19, 2010 | No Comments
In October last year, Pentax launched a "robotic" version of their K-x entry level digital camera, a colorful variation of the conventional black model. And today, the same company, presented another "creative" approach, the "Camera-man" [JP]. It's not a new camera (or a special version of an existing device) but a set of accessories, namely a special 52mm lens cap (which shows a smiley) and a puppet body that needs to be fixed beneath the cap.

Japanese company offers anti-pollen allergy ringtone
Posted on March 5, 2010 | No Comments
Do you remember the ringtone for dogs a Japanese company started offering two years ago? Now Japan gets to download another equally zany app for their cell phones, a ringtone [JP] that's supposed to clean your nostrils in case you suffer from pollen allergy. The way it works is pretty simple.

WrapAgain: Save the world one boxed tie and cologne combo gift at a time
Posted on January 12, 2010 | No CommentsThis hit our radar a little late for Kwanzaa but it’s an interesting idea: reusable cloth wrapping paper. The company, called WrapAgain, offers multiple sizes and styles. The stuff is completely reusable and includes ribbons for tying. Here’s how to use them: All Wrapagains are roughly square. Each has two corners with ribbon permanently attached. Lay Wrapagain out [...] -

Make your own Ball and Cage
Posted on August 13, 2009 | No CommentsWelcome to CrunchGear’s old-timey corner of fun. First, read this for a bit of charming reminiscence: When I was a kid growing up on a farm, most boys carried a knife to school and usually sharpened their own pencils.
