Today’s lesson: Know your opponent
Posted on January 19, 2010 | No Comments
I'm a big believer in open source development. The bazaar development model allows quality ideas to float to the top, albeit in sometimes contentious ways. The Linux kernel, the Apache httpd web server, and the PHP programming language are all developed in the open, and anyone is allowed to participate in their development. Filing bug reports is as important as writing the actual code. It helps, though, to have some sense of understanding of who you might be dealing with when you engage in a pissing match in a bug report.

Video: Hold on, go right
Posted on December 18, 2009 | No Comments
It's an age-old trope: the enhance in the movie that can zoom into a finitely granular photo in order to see the face of a killer in someone's eye. It's a beautiful McGuffin, a way to stick in a little tech nerdery into an otherwise boring scene.
It also saves writers from having to think up really good scenes.

The DuinoTagger and Talcapult
Posted on November 19, 2009 | No CommentsLike a ’70s cop team – one is the goodie two shoes and the other one is the drunk – the DuinoTagger and Talcapult allow you to shoot things and make smoke appear. The gun uses an Arduino board to control a tiny catapult that blows out a little puff of smoke. The instructions are pretty [...] -
SeeNow.com: Put your friends in compromising positions
Posted on October 22, 2009 | No CommentsSeeNow is a cute website that allows you to create those old timey "face-in-hole" pictures so popular at county fairs, hay rides, and correctional facilities. The concept is simple: you upload, link to, or take a picture of your face and then put it into a series of clever situations or onto the faces of popular celebrities. Step 4? Profit!

Ticonderoga Antimicrobial Pencils: Say what?
Posted on October 9, 2009 | No CommentsTwo things I learned today: there is a blog dedicated to office supplies and on that blog is a set of Ticonderoga pencils with antimicrobial coating. OfficeSupplyGeek apparently bought these latex-free and antimicrobial pencils so he could test out a new pencil sharpener. He, like me, feels this is a bit disingenuous: My non-scientific opinion here is [...] -
