Google Maps for Android adds transit departure times, Latitude friend suggestions
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsOne of Google's favorite pastimes is shoehorning bits of new functionality into Google Maps for Android, probably because... well, because it can -- updating a package on its own mobile platform is a heck of a lot easier than, say, getting Apple to add a feature to its Maps app. To that end, version 4.3 has just rolled out with three major additions: aggregated (and color-coded) business reviews broken down by topic, transit system departure times, and suggested friends for Latitude. We'll admit, we occasionally forget that Latitude exists, so this seems like a timely addition to get it back into the spotlight -- and if you live in New York, Chicago, or another city with a sprawling bus and subway system, we're sure you'll be amped about the schedules. Now if those times were actually correct, that'd be really mind-blowing.

You can now send Google Maps directions to your Ford Sync-equipped vehicle
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsOh, a car story written by Nicholas. This is sure to be riddled with errors! (Kidding&mdas;or am I?) Ford Sync, which Matt has talked about for some time, now works with Google Maps. That is, from Google Maps on your computer or mobile or whatever, you select a destination then send it straight to your car. That way, when you hop in the saddle—cars have saddles, right?—your destination is all marked out for you. Pretty neat.

Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsIn a move that could shape the mobile landscape -- or simply suck down cash, of course -- General Motors just revealed that Google was its mysterious infotainment partner. In the final hours before Google I/O, we sat down with GM VP Nick Pudar to tell us what the future thus holds for OnStar. As we saw in January, GM's already developing smartphone apps for the Chevy Volt on iPhone, Blackberry and Android that will let you remotely lock doors, honk the horn, check tire pressure and more.... But sometime after the Volt launches, Google Maps Navigation will be integrated into the smartphone app, and we got a hands-on tour. Check out the new interface and hear about GM's strategy after the break.

Google Maps for Android adds bike routes, sharing, dedicated navigation icon
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsIf you're running an Android phone and you're lucky enough to be using 1.6 or above (our deepest apologies, CLIQ owners), we might recommend you pop open the Market and score the latest version of Google Maps that just launched today. What's new? It adds support for bicycle routing (something they've had on the desktop for a while now) and sharing of destinations via the usual array of mediums like email, Facebook, Twitter, and so on, but the most significant change might also be the smallest: the addition of a dedicated icon for Google Maps Navigation. The product is still in beta, but this seems like an early sign that it's starting to come of age -- and on a more practical level, this obviously makes it quite a bit easier to launch right into a route when you saddle up in the car. Anywho, Motorola, about that CLIQ update?

Patience is a virtue, but as tech fanatics who lap up the latest in hardware and software, we've not enirely familiar with that concept. So when we heard that it could take up to a few days for the Nexus One Android OTA update, it was a little disheartening. We want it now! And thanks to some clever folks over at Android Forums, we can get it right this moment. It just takes some simple tinkering and you should be good to go.

Google blocks hacked Navigation from international use
Posted on December 8, 2009 | No CommentsWe were sort of hoping Google would turn a blind eye to the Android hackers who'd enabled Google Maps Navigation for use internationally, but it appears we're just hopelessly optimistic: El Goog's shut Navigation down outside the States. The changes are apparently "anticipated," and the hackers in charge are hard at work getting around it, so there's hope yet -- and at some point Mountain View is going to have to actually launch Navigation abroad for real, so this all just seems a bit petty.

Google Maps Navigation makes trip across the pond, thanks to some hackery
Posted on November 30, 2009 | No CommentsApparently us Yanks have been spoiled by the warm embrace of Google Maps Navigation, forgetting that our friends in the UK don't have the same luxury. Leave it to Electricpig to connect worlds, finding a somewhat hack-induced way to bring the app upgrade to British Android 1.6 devices. Instructions are pretty easy, so if you're game, don your DIY hat and click over.
Update: As indicated, the gang at xda-developers forum have been doing this for some time now. Consider the tutorial provided here as very straightforward and easy to follow -- anyone with an Android 1.6 device would be remiss not to give Navigation a shot now.Filed under: Cellphones

Google didn’t kill the standalone GPS

Alright, everyone, settle down. I know the Google Maps Navigation stuff is pretty amazing, but let's not write off the traditional GPS makers just yet. They're not going anywhere for a while. Your parents and friends will see to that.
Hopefully the sudden market loss that companies like Garmin and TomTom saw yesterday will wake the companies up and see that they are doing it wrong. They are in the habit of producing 78 different versions of the same GPS. Each model steps you up $20 and adds another feature. It's a ridiculous business plan and totally opposite what successful companies are doing.
But it's true. Google dropped a bombshell on GPS makers yesterday with its free navigation tool that trumps almost anything currently available. The Android 2.0 app is about as robust as you can get thanks to the always connected Android OS and almighty Google. You can simply say "Where is the Best Buy in Flint, MI" and it will take you there. All this is free from the "do no evil" company, Google.

Naturally, the DROID itself is just the first of what could be many Android-laced phones coming to the carrier, and Verizon Wireless CMO John Stratton even stated that the phone "is wide open" -- pretty big words from a company like VZW. Android 2.0 will be front and center, along with Visual Voicemail, a 3.7-inch display (854 x 480 resolution), 5 megapixel camera (with dual-LED flash), a bundled 16GB memory card and a beta version of Google Maps Navigation(!). For those wondering, yeah -- the DROID is the first phone to offer that, which transforms Google Maps into a turn-by-turn routing system that'll have your dedicated TomTom / Garmin trembling in fear. There's also a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3G, WiFi, voice-activated search and over-the-air Amazon MP3 downloads. With all that, who needs the iPhone, right Ivan?
