Nexus One rooted already?
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No Comments
No, you still can't have one (not yet, at least), but we've received a number of tips directing us Modaco forums, where admin Paul claims to have rooted Google's not-so-mysterious Nexus One. We can't validate the "superboot" file works, but the adjacent picture has popped up from another forum member as apparent anecdotal confirmation. Instructions for Windows, Linux, and OS X users can be found along with the necessary materials. What do you say, hacker community, any chance we can get multitouch loaded into the device before it ever becomes official to the world at large?

G.S.M. encryption hacked
Posted on December 29, 2009 | No CommentsKarsten Nohl, a PhD from the University of Virginia, looking dreamy above, has broken A5/1, an algorithm to encrypt G.S.M. cellphone conversation. The hack follows a few steps including the use of a distributed key-gathering sytem to capture and decoding of a number of G.S.M. 64-bit encryption keys, the kind of keys that most cellular [...] -
Kindle DRM hacked
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No Comments
A hacker, Labba, and his buddies have cracked the Kindle's ebook DRM, essentially allowing folks to extract the text of Amazon's AZW files into a PDF for viewing on any reader. The hackers have reverse engineered the ebook code and very close to a formal, software-based solution.

Nook gets a softroot and its first homebrew app
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No Comments
Those wacky NookDevs have hacked the Nook to within an inch of its life, created a softroot for those who don't want to crack open their Nook cases to get at the soft and sweet MicroSD card inside. The softroot essentially "jailbreaks" the Nook, allowing you to install homebrew software onto the device.
You can download the software here and I've mirrored it here so we don't destroy their server (although I doubt there are enough hardcore Nookers right now). You should check back with the NookDevs often and always.

Nookdevs have already rooted the Android-powered ebook and programmers have succeeded in installing multiple apps that have been ported to the version of the OS running on the Nook. What [...] -

Windows Marketplace’s newest anti-piracy measures already thwarted
Posted on November 12, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Software, Windows Mobile
Yar, that was fast. Less than a day after Microsoft updated its Windows Marketplace for Mobile with new advanced anti-piracy measure, some apt xda-developers community member has managed to crack the new code -- in under two hours, according to Chainfire's posting. The hack itself won't be posted, but we're sure other astute programmers, many of more nefarious intention, will be able to have their way with it just as easy. Sad for developers who've been wanting something more secure -- better luck next update.

CrunchGear PSA: If you run XBMC or Boxee on your Apple TV, do not upgrade to 3.0
Posted on October 30, 2009 | No CommentsTo repeat, do not upgrade your Apple TV to 3.0 if you’re running hacked ATV plugins like XBox Media Center or Boxee. I’m sure this will be fixed in a matter of days – if not hours – but as of right now it means a ride on the Failboat to Sad Trombone Town. That’s [...] -

Posted on October 22, 2009 | No Comments

MMS for iPhone 2G and tethering on OS 3.1.2 explained, not for the faint of heart
Posted on October 19, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Apple, iPhone OS
Let's be clear upfront that this isn't for the casual iPhone jailbreaker, but if you feeling like living on the edge, you can give your original model an added boost of MMS capability, or any device with OS 3.1.2 the power to tether. Highlighted in a series of tweets today by iPhone dev team lead MuscleNerd, whiterat (for MMS) and two-bit (for tethering) will get the job done, but both require tinkering with the baseband, which is exponentially more advanced and brick-inducing than, say, installing Cydia. Venture forth with the instructions beyond the read links below.
