We live in a world where a 1.5TB Seagate Baracuda hard drive costs only $95
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsStarting off your Tuesday with a quick deal. Amazon has a 1.5TB Seagate Baracuda (7200RPM, SATA II, 32MB cache) for $95—a full $100 off the regular price. Could make a fine storage drive, you know, for all those “digital photos” you have. Pretty sure “digital photos” is codeword for Blu-ray rips and the like. -
Hitachi unveils super-fast, super-slim HDD for laptops
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No Comments
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced the Travelstar Z5K320 today, a new line of 2.5-inch mobile hard drives that are just 7mm thick. The HDDs will be available in capacities of 160GB, 250GB or 320GB. Hitachi says the new HDDs are the slimmest, lightest, and fastest in the industry (at least in this combination).

Western Digital has sold more hard drives this year than Seagate
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No Comments
Five hundred and fifty eight million hard drives were shipped in 2009. Think about that for a moment. Five hundred and fifty eight million. Of those, 175.2 million (or 31.4%) carried the Seagate brand name while 165.2 million came from Western Digital. According to The Information Network, WD pulled ahead in the first quarter of 2010, selling 51.1 million hard drives compared to Seagate's 50.3 million sold. I guess that's big news, if you're really into hard drives, or have strong brand loyalty to the drive in your computer. Me, I don't care so much.

Monami, the hard drive concept with a leather top hat (kinda)
Posted on May 4, 2010 | No CommentsYeah... How much thought do you put into your hard drive purchase? Like, zero seconds? I mean, you check out the specs—capacity, cache, speed, etc.—and then off you go. Do you care what it looks like? I certainly don't, but then I'm probably not the "demo" for this deal. Then again, it's not even real, so I don't even know what's going on anymore.

Look at that, someone (Super Talent) has finally thought to release relatively inexpensive SSDs
Posted on April 9, 2010 | No CommentsAll the cool kids in the neighborhood are building their PCs with solid state drives these days. Who wants to use a plain old hard disk drive, what with its icky moving parts, when you can cruise along on a drive with zero moving parts? I mean, it's no contest. Problem: SSDs are usually what I like to call "mad expensive." You're paying a heck of a lot for a fairly small drive... until now~! Super Talent has a brand new line of "value" SSDs that are low-ish in price. It's all the benefit of an SSD without the incredibly high price. At least that's the idea.

Western Digital Velociraptor SATA 3.0 hard drives are the fastest money can buy
Posted on April 6, 2010 | No CommentsIt's like Christmas morning for PC enthusiasts today. Western Digital has released its SATA 3.0 (that's a maximum transfer rate of 6.0 Gb/s, which translates to 768 MB/s) Velociraptor hard drives. The Velociraptor name basically means "OMG FAST!" when it comes to hard drives. The thing is, unlike the last time Western Digital released Velociraptor hard drives, two years ago, solid state drives are on the market, and they're clearly faster than even the fastest traditional hard drive. Doesn't matter: if you're looking for absolute, top-of-the-line performance when it comes to traditional hard drives, it looks like these new Velociraptors are the way to go.

Toshiba Canvio portable hard drives
Posted on March 29, 2010 | No Comments
According to research sponsored by Toshiba, more Americans are afraid of losing digital data -- photos, documents, etc -- than they are about losing their wallet or an audit by the IRS. This is probably because more people have suffered a digital loss than have been audited by the IRS -- we all say "It can't happen to me!" until it actually does happen, and only then do we change our behaviors. But the reality is, backing up data has historically been tedious, if not actually challenging. And restores are so rarely done as to require the user to search for the long discarded product manual so they can figure out how to do it...

Seagate finally shows up at the solid state drive party with an enterprise offering
Posted on December 8, 2009 | No Comments
Seagate, the big huge hard drive company, has just now officially announced its first ever solid state drive. The press release title says “Seagate Introduces Its First Solid State Drive: Pulsar” and above the title it says “December 08, 2009.” To be fair, Seagate CEO Bill Watkins hasn’t been keen on solid state drives, saying a little over a year ago that his company wasn’t really considering the solid state market aside from these enterprise-level drives that have just been announced.

Review: Western Digital My Book Essential with SmartWare backup software
Posted on October 20, 2009 | No Comments
Short version: Western Digital's refreshed My Book Essential external hard drive provides a simple, unobtrusive, and relatively inexpensive home backup solution. With an enormous 2TB capacity, built-in WD SmartWare software, 256-bit built-in encryption with password protection, an "illuminated capacity gauge," and a MSRP of $249.99, there is very little not to like here.

Review: iStoragePro iT4UFER and a contest
Posted on September 29, 2009 | No Comments
Storage is cheap, and just keeps getting cheaper. I remember buying my first 250 megabyte hard drive, and paying just under a dollar per meg. Now we're approaching multi-terabyte drives at retail stores for extremely reasonable prices. The age old problem, though, is how to protect all that precious data. RAID solutions have been around for a long time, but the consumer-grade products haven't been all that great, and the commercial-grade products have been way too expensive. Things are starting to change, though, and the iStoragePro iT4UFER is a good indicator of what's to come. Read on for a complete review, and a chance to win a $100 Starbucks gift card!
Bad news for the XP diehards out there, hard drive manufacturers are tired of supporting you, and the next generation of controller technology is not going to work properly with DOS and Windows XP users. Of course it won't be a major issue until 2011, and maybe not even then.
