    Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced the Travelstar Z5K320 today, a new line of 2.5-inch mobile hard drives that are just 7mm thick. The HDDs will be available in capacities of 160GB, 250GB or 320GB. Hitachi says the new HDDs are the slimmest, lightest, and fastest in the industry (at least in this combination).

    Five hundred and fifty eight million hard drives were shipped in 2009. Think about that for a moment. Five hundred and fifty eight million. Of those, 175.2 million (or 31.4%) carried the Seagate brand name while 165.2 million came from Western Digital. According to The Information Network, WD pulled ahead in the first quarter of 2010, selling 51.1 million hard drives compared to Seagate's 50.3 million sold. I guess that's big news, if you're really into hard drives, or have strong brand loyalty to the drive in your computer. Me, I don't care so much.

    Yeah... How much thought do you put into your hard drive purchase? Like, zero seconds? I mean, you check out the specs—capacity, cache, speed, etc.—and then off you go. Do you care what it looks like? I certainly don't, but then I'm probably not the "demo" for this deal. Then again, it's not even real, so I don't even know what's going on anymore.

    All the cool kids in the neighborhood are building their PCs with solid state drives these days. Who wants to use a plain old hard disk drive, what with its icky moving parts, when you can cruise along on a drive with zero moving parts? I mean, it's no contest. Problem: SSDs are usually what I like to call "mad expensive." You're paying a heck of a lot for a fairly small drive... until now~! Super Talent has a brand new line of "value" SSDs that are low-ish in price. It's all the benefit of an SSD without the incredibly high price. At least that's the idea.

    It's like Christmas morning for PC enthusiasts today. Western Digital has released its SATA 3.0 (that's a maximum transfer rate of 6.0 Gb/s, which translates to 768 MB/s) Velociraptor hard drives. The Velociraptor name basically means "OMG FAST!" when it comes to hard drives. The thing is, unlike the last time Western Digital released Velociraptor hard drives, two years ago, solid state drives are on the market, and they're clearly faster than even the fastest traditional hard drive. Doesn't matter: if you're looking for absolute, top-of-the-line performance when it comes to traditional hard drives, it looks like these new Velociraptors are the way to go.

    According to research sponsored by Toshiba, more Americans are afraid of losing digital data -- photos, documents, etc -- than they are about losing their wallet or an audit by the IRS. This is probably because more people have suffered a digital loss than have been audited by the IRS -- we all say "It can't happen to me!" until it actually does happen, and only then do we change our behaviors. But the reality is, backing up data has historically been tedious, if not actually challenging. And restores are so rarely done as to require the user to search for the long discarded product manual so they can figure out how to do it...

    It’s beginning to look like Expensive Speed Day here at CrunchGear, what with the USB 3.0 products and now this solid state drive from SanDisk. The G3 SSD is a solid-state drive available in 60GB and 120GB capacities for around $230 and $400, respectively.

    Seagate, the big huge hard drive company, has just now officially announced its first ever solid state drive. The press release title says “Seagate Introduces Its First Solid State Drive: Pulsar” and above the title it says “December 08, 2009.” To be fair, Seagate CEO Bill Watkins hasn’t been keen on solid state drives, saying a little over a year ago that his company wasn’t really considering the solid state market aside from these enterprise-level drives that have just been announced.

    Samsung has a tiny solid state drive that might make its way into future notebooks and netbooks. Based on the mSATA (mini-SATA) interface, the drive would require no external housing and “would plug directly into an internal PCI Express (PCIe) slot in a desktop, laptop or netbook,” according to Computerworld.
