Nexus One steps up to 720p HD video thanks to latest hack (video)

The indefatigable coders over at xda-developers have just pushed out a download that allows the Nexus One to start shooting video at 720p resolution. You'll need to have at least CyanogenMod version 5.0.8test3, but once you get your house in order, you'll be enjoying one of the big touted features of the latest handsets on your five-month old Googlephone. Pretty neat, and what's even better is that work is already underway to improve audio and the fps rate, as well as making the code compatible with Android Froyo, it all just requires a bit more tinkering. iPhone 4 does 720p HD video, iMovie

A backside-illuminated 5 megapixel sensor is about to grace the new iPhone's rear, equipped with an LED flash and 720p / 30fps video recording. Tap to focus will also be rolled out in the iPhone Quattro, and Steve Jobs is keen to impress on us all that although the megapixel count has grown, the quality of images has apparently improved. That's what they all say. The added functionality of iMovie won't come for free, however, with Apple asking a $4.99 tithe for granting access to its more sophisticated video editing options. This is moving things along, to be sure, but why is the upper limit of storage still 32GB? A more generous apportionment of memory would've gone very nicely indeed with that HD video mode.

Sharp unveils world’s first 3D HD camera module for mobile devices

In the past weeks the company presented a new 3D touchscreen for mobile devices, then the world's first four-primary 3D display, followed by a 3D e-book reader. And today Sharp in Japan unveiled [press release in English] the world's first 3D camera module that can be used in mobile devices such as cell phones, cameras or portable gaming systems.

Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsOh yeah, things just got real. Sharp has announced an industry first today, with its 720p-recordin' 3D camera module. Intended for mobile devices like smartphones and point-and-shoot digicams, this miniature wonder will be sampling in July and hitting mass production before the end of the year. Not much else is known about it at this point -- we can guess it'll cost a pretty penny when it debuts -- but Sharp has penned an effusive press release, which you may explore just past the break.

Video: Sony teases awesome-looking interchangeable lens HD camcorder

We were very impressed with the NEX3 and NEX5 digital cameras Sony presented yesterday for the first time. And today, the company in Tokyo announced [press release in English] a hardware prototype of a great-looking interchangeable HD camcorder. Technical details are relatively scarce at this point, but Sony says they will be using the same "Exmor" APS HD CMOS sensor the NEX3 and NEX5 will have.

Toshiba unveils 21-inch, glasses-free HD 3D display

We're about to get yet another 3D display. This time, it's Toshiba Mobile Display Corp. that's prepping such a screen, an autostereoscopic (glasses-free), 21-inch 3D HD display "for use in next-generation 3D monitors", to be more exact. Toshiba says the main selling points is that its new "integral imaging system" with 9-parallax design makes it possible for users to view 3D images from a wider range of viewing angles.

Rumor: Upcoming TiVo improvements include UI revamp and full HD support

A tipster writes in with knowledge of some of the improvements TiVo may be making to its devices. The most important: a move to full HD menus, improved search, and the phasing out of Series 2 hardware. Because the company stopped making improvements to the current software as of the middle of last year, our source believes that aside from minor add-ons like Blockbuster support the old UI and OS will be replaced by a fully HD version, available at first on Series 3 hardware.
He describes the move as something akin to Microsoft's redesign of the Xbox Dashboard - a surface refresh that plays better with larger, HD TVs. This could also include new methods for adding apps and content to existing boxes.

Tokyo-based USB accessory specialist Thanko has a thing for spy gadgets. Just look at their spy button camera, the USB necktie with a built-in camera and the camera watch they developed in the last few months. Last July, Thanko started offering a a pen with an integrated micro camera. And today the company announced [JP] the so-called Super Slim Video Pen 2, which is a spy pen that shoots video in HD (1,280x960 at 30fps, to be more exact).

(We'll be arriving in Las Vegas throughout the day today.) First up for me: new camcorders from Canon. Entry-level ones, too, so don't feel intimidated. You've got the HFR11, the HFR10, and the HFR100. They're basically souped up, HD versions of the previous FS series of entry-level cameras. Nothing wrong with HD.

Orange plans to bring ‘HD Voice’ calls to UK next year

We've had some indication that Orange planned to expand its "HD Voice" technology beyond the hot testbed of Moldova sometime in the coming year, and it looks like the carrier is now starting to get a bit more specific about when the UK will finally have an alternative to standard definition calls. Apparently, Orange will begin trials of the new and improved, 3G-facilitated service early in the new year, and fully roll it out along with a "range of handsets" before the end of the year. Just what can you expect from HD voice? Why, it will make it "sound as if callers are actually in the same room," according to Orange UK chief executive Tom Alexander, who further added that "HD voice really does inject a level of innovation into mobile phone calls," and that "once people have tried it, they won't want to go back."
Update: Orange has now pushed out a press release further confirming that trials will begin in the UK early in the new year, with a nationwide rollout due "later in 2010." Zii Trinity’s HD playback gets a quick and promising look
Posted on December 6, 2009 | No CommentsIt's over far too quickly, but in the video after the break, what you get to see is how well the Zii Trinity mobile prototype handles outputting HD video -- in this case, a very smooth playback of a snippet from Wall-E. Can we express more excitement for Creative's little platform that could? Probably, but we're already reaching pretty high. Now if only we could get some hands-on time of our own...
