Dell Streak car and AV docks now on sale, HDMI may or may not be included

Dell's got the goods for you with a rich new selection of cables, plugs, adapters, and cases for your new Streak. It looks like the HDMI dock we've been jonesing for has probably become a retail reality, but there's no way to be sure right now -- Dell's only listing an AV dock without going into the TV connectivity options. The fresh offerings also include the kickstand-equipped wallet case that we found intriguing, spare battery and sync cables, and an international travel kit. Of course, every silver lining has a cloud, which in this case is the pricing: nothing here costs less than £24 ($35) and the car- and TV-enabling docks will set you back a cool £55 ($80) each. Jumbo smartphone, jumbo accessory prices.

Nokia completes its N8 video tour with media player and HDMI demo
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsYou've seen parts uno and due already no doubt, so let's dive straight into the third and final installment of Nokia's N8 overview. Today we are treated to the Symbian^3 media player, which continues to closely resemble Apple's Cover Flow, but we're sure the companies will work it out between themselves. That cover-centric interface gets tugged around a few times to show the phone can handle it without lag, and we also get to see a repeat visit from our friend Mr. Long Press, which functions as a mobile version of a right-click by popping up a menu of contextual options. The video continues into a look at the HDMI connectivity and points out that the N8 will be compatible with Bluetooth keyboards -- you know, if you're in the mood for an Espoo-approved version of Google TV. Motorola Milestone XT720 announced: 8 megapixel cam, 720p video, and Droid heritage (update: video!)
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsMotorola has just outed a Europe-bound Milestone XT720, a handset intended to grab the attention of camera lovers with an 8 megapixel sensor, 720p / 24fps video and -- a first for Android handsets -- a xenon flash. Speaking of Android, this will come loaded up with version 2.1 when it launches later this month. Plans for 2.2 upgrades are, as usual, not yet formalized and not under discussion. Other specs include a 3.7-inch, 480 x 854 screen, a 550MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, and a promised 9 hours of talk time and 320 hours of standby time. It looks very much like Moto's selection of Droid-esque handsets that have been prowling the Chinese market, and it seems the company has enjoyed success with the keyboard-less form factor and is pushing it out to Europe. US release plans are also not being discussed -- it might happen and it might not, seems to us like it'll depend on the Euros' reaction. We're just getting to grips with the handset right now, and will furnish you with video of it as soon as we can.
P.S. We're told this handset is closer to the Motoroi than anything else, Motorola describes them as sister devices. We also spotted a network update from Orange on the demo handset, implicating it as a possible carrier for the XT720 in the UK.

Dell Streak HDMI dock gets the hands-on treatment, kickstand-equipped case makes a cameo

We managed to get an early look at the HDMI dock for the Dell Streak way back in February courtesy of T3's Greek site, but the accessory is now finally official (if not widely available), and Laptop Magazine has come through with what appears to be the first proper hands-on. Of course, there's not exactly a lot to go hands-on with, but it seems that dock does indeed function as a dock, and it also thankfully has a USB port and a line-out in addition to that HDMI port. Perhaps just as notable, however, is a Streak case that Laptop has also managed to get its hands on, which has a built-in kickstand. Acer’s Android-powered Stream gets official, gets handled, lives up to its name with DLNA support (video)
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsIf for some reason none of the current Android slates have tickled your fancy, not the Nexus One nor the Droid Incredible nor even the Evo, maybe Acer's Stream is for you. It sports Nexus One-like specs, with a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and 512MB of RAM. It's five megapixel camera can record 720p video and it can also play back content at the same resolution with support for Xvid, WMV HD, and others. There's an HDMI port on-board in case you want to bring that content to the big(ger) screen, and it'll even act as a DLNA and UPnP streamer on WiFi, with dedicated play/pause, fast-foward, and rewind buttons. This could be the most media-friendly Android smartphone we've yet seen, and that it's already made its way into the hands of a previewer (as shown in the favoloso video after the break) and has passed FCC scrutineering is a very, very good sign that this could be serving up your home media collection soon.

HTC EVO 4G will have a HDMI dock, sold through Best Buy
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsOne of the things we bemoaned in our EVO 4G review was the lack of an included Micro HDMI cable in the box, mostly because they're still somewhat hard to find, but that worry can now be allayed thanks to this newly uncovered HDMI dock from HTC. It will work with the Micro-USB port at the bottom of your EVO for data and power transfers, but the main attraction will obviously be its compatibility with the phone's Type D connector and HDMI 1.4 connectivity. Before you rush to your nearest Best Buy to get one, though, there are a couple of caveats. PC Mag's testing of the HDMI output found some TVs only recognized a 480p signal when the EVO was sending out 1080p, and a number of apps, including Sprint TV, refused to send their goods out over the High-Definition Multimedia Interface at all. Might be worth trying before buying in this case, as in most others.

Motorola’s 4.3-inch Droid Shadow found in a unicorn gym?
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsColor us highly skeptical of the backstory, but Gizmodo claims to have received a picture of Motorola's rumored 4.3-inch Droid Shadow. The device above was supposedly left behind at a Verizon corporate gym in Washington. As the story is told, a gym employee managed to snap the photo above and identify an HDMI jack, 8 megapixel camera, Snapdragon processor, and 16GB of storage before the handset was remotely locked and the owner returned to claim it. Suspiciously, there's only one photo of the device shown at precisely the same angle as the supposedly leaked "getting started" image seen three days ago -- right, just enough time to cobble together a Photoshop. The refined Motoblur UI seems to align though so who knows... really, who knows?

HDMI coming to more netbooks in 2011

HDMI can be found on a few netbooks right now, but it's set to become standard next year when Intel's Cedar Trail-M platform hits the tiny lappies. Most of the current netbooks with HDMI are built around Nvidia's ION GPU platform, which also drives up the cost. But by moving HDMI support to the CPU, it should come on nearly every netbook.

Harman Kardon releases HDMI 1.4a upgrade for selected receivers

And just as I was getting used to my HDMI 1.3a! Harman Kardon is releasing updates to its AVR2600,3600, and 7550HD receivers, enabling HDMI 1.4a through a firmware upgrade.
"In order to meet the requirements for HDMI ver1.4a it is true that a combination of hardware and software specs must be met. The underlying hardware architecture of these models is configured in a way that does not require any change. Thus, only updated software is required. The issue is different from one type of product to another (e.g. AVR vs. Blu ray vs. TV) as well as from one brand or model to another. In some cases a hardware change is needed and a software upgrade is not sufficient, but in the case of these models (as well as some other products in the market)" (Robert Silva example: Sony PS3) "new software and compliance testing is all that is needed."

Motorola’s Zeppelin spotted, found to contain Android rather than hydrogen

Last week's blurry little roadmap from Motorola gave us our first glimpse of the codename Zeppelin, and now just a few days later the back half of the thing has floated its way into the hands of someone at DIGI.QQ.com. The Android-powered handset is said to sport a five megapixel camera with flash, WiFi, a 3.1-inch 480 x 320 screen, HDMI output, and, in a first for Android, dual SIM slots marked GSM and CDMA -- technically an R-UIM slot for CDMA, actually, which pretty much limits this thing to China. And indeed, rumor has it release will come behind the Great Wall sometime in the first quarter of next year, with worldwide shipments (of some other variant, we'd imagine) sometime later. Sure, that's a long time to wait if your contract expiration is nigh, but we hear that Droid thing is pretty neat.

Atlona has some nifty swivel HDMI and DVI cables

I'm a sucker for products that make installing A/V equipment easier and these cables from Atlona do just that. The ends swivel to allow for tighter mounting against the wall. You see, some cables feature large, cool looking ends that don't like to bend against a wall, which then pushes the flat screen out a bit or forcing the installer to cut into the wall. But these cables bend in half which should make for a cleaner install. Wall brackets are getting thin and thin, and these cables will allow installers to practically flush mount a flat screen.
