    Sony turning to Intel chips and Android to revitalize TV sales

    Look out, Sony is actually trying something new and might announce Intel Atom-powered TVs next month at Google I/O 2010. A new Android released dubbed Dragonpoint is said to run on these TVs and will be just the beginning of Sony's venture into the so-called Smart TV market. The report comes from Bloomberg who sources two people familiar with the matter. The timing is certainly right. Sony hasn't been in the top TV spot for years, constantly losing marketshare to others like Samsung, LG, and even Vizio. Something needs to be done and so Sony is said to be testing a whole line of home entertainment devices that will bring the wonders of the Internet to TVs and Blu-ray players through Android. Logitech is even said to be in on the venture and will contribute a wireless keyboard that will work as a remote. But as sweet as an Android TV sounds, it might not be the right solution -- at least not for the North American market. This could either be a huge win or a fail whale.

    Vizio announced the 1080p LED XVT line way back in June of '09 and they are just now starting to ship. These are the sets that come with that oh-so-awesome QWERTY remote to work the TV's collection of Internet apps. It's too bad that most owners will still need a cable or satellite box because this TV line is nearly an all-in-one solution for home entertainment.

    If you read the headline, then you already know that Samsung pushed out 2.6 million LED TVs in 2009. That's nearly equal to the population of San Diego. But the company also expects 2010 to be bigger -- a lot bigger. Samsung plans on moving 10 million LED LCD TVs in 2010, which would be one to every person living in Beijing. That's a lot, folks.

    LCD TVs have taken over the world. Market research firm DisplaySearch estimates in a new report that of the 205 million total TVs shipped in 2009, 140.5 million, or 69 percent, were LCD TVs (the rest were plasma and CRTs). In 2010, that percentage is forecast to rise to 78 percent for LCD TVs, when total shipments will rise to 218 million. Total TV shipments have actually been on the decline since mid-2008 as demand for older CRT TVs plummeted. Only in the third quarter did the increase in shipments of LCD TVs make up for the decline in other kinds of TVs. For the year as a whole, DisplaySearch still expects a 1 percent decline in shipments in 2009, followed by a 6 percent increase in 2010. Worldwide TV revenues fell an estimated 10 percent to $101 billion, from $112 billion in 2008.  But revenues are expected to rise in the first quarter of 2010 for the first time in six quarters.
