Vodafone’s R201 mobile router has OLED display, microSD sharing
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsNovatel's MiFi line has set a standard for the way mobile 3G routers are expected to look and work, but let's be honest -- there's always room for improvement. We've been tipped today with word of Vodafone's R201 model sourced from Huawei, a device we've previously seen in the FCC with support for full HSPA. It'll handle up to five users at once -- pretty standard for these kinds of devices -- and feature an Overdrive-like OLED display up top and charging / tethering via micro-USB. That's not the neat part, though: it's said that the R201 will be the first mobile router to feature a microSD slot that can be shared among connected devices, effectively turning the whole setup into a micro-NAS. What say you, Novatel -- time for a MiFi 2?

Android 2.1 officially hits the T-Mobile Pulse — in Hungary
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsWe wouldn't have chalked up the little ol' Pulse from Huawei to be among the first devices to get upgraded from a 1.x build of Android to Eclair, but T-Mobile's Hungarian outpost (of all places) has taken the role of knight in shining armor in delivering the goods in the past few days. Happily, users of the Pulse in other locales will find no shortage of cooked ROMs on places like MoDaCo, so no one should get left behind here -- but still, T-Mobile UK, what gives?

Huawei E5830 MiFi / i-Mo gets free unlock tool, parties outside the USA

Nope, this isn't the MiFi that you guys are familiar with in the States; everyone else -- mainly 3 / Hutchison customers -- are given this cute-looking Huawei E5830 HSPA modem instead. If you want to join this exotic MiFi party but would rather boogie with a different carrier, then fear not, as ex-iPhone hacker Zibri's just released a free unlock tool. It's pretty easy -- just plug in your MiFi (with its preloaded SIM card inside) into a Windows machine, launch the program, type in "Success! :)" to unveil the unlock button, and you know the rest. Looking at the image above, I know what you're thinking, but look on the bright side: you'll be much safer crossing the streets at night with that thing plastered to your ear. Huawei has just announced a number of colorful handsets that don't look like your average Android handsets.

China Unicom, Huawei rolling out ‘3G Inn’ femtocell service

China's carriers still have their work cut out for them to deliver wide-area 3G services nationwide, but they're already looking to get into the business of augmenting that coverage with femtocells -- probably not a bad strategy, considering the time and money involved in erecting towers in every nook and cranny of the country. China Unicom -- the carrier using UMTS as its 3G weapon of choice -- has partnered up with Huawei to deliver its 3G Inn femtocell solution that promises up to 7.2Mbps downstream. That's about 7.1Mbps faster than Verizon and Sprint's Samsung-sourced units, by our rough math -- of course, those older Sammies are 1xRTT-only, so it's good to see that newer units are stepping on the gas around the world. O2, Huawei team up for UK’s first trial LTE network

It kinda pales next to TeliaSonera's commercial launch, but give O2 some credit here -- they've just become the first carrier in the UK to trial "live" LTE services. Powered by Huawei gear on the back end, O2's hot new network hit a peak of 150Mbps on the downlink -- a speed we can't imagine seeing in real-world scenarios when 4G goes live on a large scale, but gives us hope nonetheless -- and is being used to demonstrate the kinds of things us lay folk will want to accomplish with LTE like video streaming, high-quality video calling, gaming, and torrenting New Moon (no, not really) at a company showcase. TeliaSonera launches world’s first LTE network, awaits phones eagerly
Posted on December 14, 2009 | No CommentsTeliaSonera has today flicked on the green light for its LTE networks in Stockholm and Oslo, officially starting the countdown for LTE-enabled phones. For the moment, keen mobile webstronauts will only be able to hook up their laptop or other USB-equipped device via the Samsung-provided 4G modem, but 100Mbps download speeds on the world's first commercial LTE network are still nothing to sniff at. This rollout is in fact slightly ahead of schedule, and the other major cities in Sweden and Norway are likely to soon get treated similarly well, while TeliaSonera makes a point to mention it has a license to do similar damage to Finland's 3G operators. The US might not be too far behind, either, given that the modem in use in Scandinavia recently cleared the FCC. Now if only we had phones that could ride these massive waves we'd be all set.

Huawei U8230 (in other words, the one that isn’t the Pulse) gets reviewed

Huawei's on the cusp of making a pretty serious Android push in Europe with the recent introduction of its Pulse on T-Mobile and this little puppy, the U8230, which -- let's be honest, is shaping up to be little more than a Pulse remix for countries where T-Mobile doesn't do business. In fact, it seems to be the same thing from a hardware perspective (right down to the 3.5-inch HVGA display and unfortunate 2.5mm headphone jack), so you can almost look at as a prime application of HTC's classic strategy of re-skinning devices for different carriers and markets around the world. Anyhow, PointGPhone has had a chance to screw around with a proper U8230, coming away with the conclusions you might expect -- it's an interesting play at the right price point, but with that sluggish 528MHz performance, limited on-board storage, and inexplicably missing 3.5mm jack, you might be better off looking elsewhere. Not to say we have an option in the States, anyhow.

North American version of T-Mobile Pulse gets FCC approval, but for which carrier?

Android-powered handsets are still rare enough so that the world can't afford to segment them by continent -- when a big model comes out, it's pretty much got to go everywhere. Okay, correction: it doesn't have to go everywhere, but we certainly want it to -- and fortunately, it looks like some lucky carrier in the Americas is signed up for the Huawei U8220. You might know this puppy better as the Pulse over on T-Mobile in Europe, and a new variant of the device -- model number U8220-6 -- has just garnered FCC approval in the past few days with 3G on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. That means Bell, Telus, Rogers, Fido, and AT&T could all be on tap to get this one; we doubt that AT&T would make its inaugural Android plunge with a midrange Huawei, but stranger things have happened.

T-Mobile Pulse review

From humble beginnings with the HTC Dream / T-Mobile G1, Android is starting to gain traction in the marketplace. A steady growth in the number of devices from HTC together with more and more manufacturers coming on board means Google's entry into the mobile space is really making inroads. The next year is going to be exciting for Android fans, with Motorola launching the CLIQ / DEXT and the Sholes, Samsung following up their i7500 with the i5700 and Behold 2, Acer shifting focus from Windows Mobile to Android not to mention LG and Sony Ericsson shipping their first Android devices.
In amongst the larger players aiming for the higher end of the market comes Huawei, best known for its mobile broadband dongles, with the Pulse for T-Mobile Europe - a rebrand of the U8220 handset. What makes the Pulse particularly interesting is it's price point. As well as being available free of charge on virtually any contract (as is frequently the case in Europe), the Pulse costs only £176 ($280) on a pre-pay plan. This represents a significant move downmarket for Android with the only other low-end handset being the forthcoming HTC Tattoo, which is expected to ship SIM free for £299 ($475). Interestingly our review unit was even SIM unlocked, although it remains to be seen whether this will remain the case as handsets hit retail.
