iDriver: Drive your car with your iPhone
Posted on October 26, 2009 | No CommentsThere is cool and then there is cool. Alright, I guess this isn’t that cool — it seems sort of dangerous, after all — but it’s still neat. Neat is a good way to describe iDriver, an iPhone app that turns regular automobiles into full size remote control cars. Yup. Full. Size. Remote. Control. Cars. Currently, [...] -
Layar now adding layers of augmented reality to iPhone
Posted on October 14, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Apple, iPhone OS
Since your Android handset-owning friends and colleagues can't have all the phone, Layar has finally made the leap to iPhone. It's now available in the iTunes app store for the enticing price of nada, with its own third-party ecosystem to boot -- only iPhone 3GS customers need apply, though, since without the magnetometer this is kind of a wash. We've only spent a few minutes with the new version, but it seems like much of our initial impressions from August seem to hold true, for better and for worse. But don't take our word for it, download away! [Warning: iTunes link]

David Hockney paints with his iPhone, results not typical
Posted on October 11, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Apple, iPhone OS
Artist David Hockney isn't afraid of picking up new media -- over the years, he's used Polaroids, photocollages, and even fax machines to create his art -- in addition to regular, old-fashioned painting. Now, he's taken to using his iPhone to create new works of art. The resultant "paintings" have been exhibited at the Tate Gallery and Royal Academy in London, as well as galleries in Los Angeles and Germany. Like artist Jorge Colombo (whose iPhone fingerpainting was featured on the cover of The New Yorker), Hockney uses the iPhone app Brushes to create his works. In an interview with the New York Review of Books, Hockney notes that he prefers and still uses the original version of the app, not the more recent updates. Hmm... maybe the reason our own Brushes paintings stink is because we're using the update!

“World’s Sexiest App”? Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Models Now Clutch Themselves On The iPhone.
Posted on July 21, 2009 | No CommentsThe print magazine business isn't doing so hot right now, but Sports Illustrated might just have found a new business model: selling an iPhone app featuring models from its 2009 Swimsuit Issue. Although the Swimsuit issue came out in February, the app just hit the iTunes store today (iTunes link). Marketed as the "World's Sexiest App" with a 17+ age rating, it costs $2.99. I'm sure it's going to make a mint. What do you get for $2.99? Photos of 20 models including Brooklyn Decker and Danica Patrick in various states of bikini nothingness and "breathtaking bodypainting videos." There are also other "intimate" videos for each model. Does Playboy have an iPhone app? It might save them too.

Universal Studios announced today that they would be releasing the first iPhone app to control Blu-ray features in upcoming Blu-ray releases starting with the two-disc Special Edition release of “Fast & Furious” on July 28.
iPhone and iPod Touch owners will be able to control certain features over their local Wi-Fi network and in the instance of Fast & Furious, they’ll be able to control and navigate the Virtual Car Garage. Said feature will entail control of “360-degree views of the movie's supercharged street-racers and instantly punch up exclusive technical specs for the film's high-tech cars.” Universal has not stated whether or not this will be the only feature enabled on the iPhone app.
