Whenever I head to the community pool, I usually take a book to read. It works well to hide my wondering eyes, but also gives me something to look at when I would otherwise be ‘distracted’. Recently I have seen a few Kindles floating around at the pool, great idea, but I couldn’t see taking that expensive device any further than my front porch.

The Kindle has slowly been creeping into Target retail outlets but the company just issued a presser stating that the most popular ebook reader on the planet will be available nationwide on June 6th. This officially makes Target Amazon's first brick and mortar retail partner, although Target isn't new to the ebook game.

Notebook and netbook maker Asus is pre-installing the Amazon Kindle for PC application, allowing Asus owners to access Amazon's selection of e-books without having to suffer through the pain of software installation on their own time. Not much more to say about this, except that it further cements Amazon's hegemony in the e-book market. How will Barnes and Noble respond, I wonder?

Kindle for Android coming this summer

What was hinted at in those leaked Dell Streak flyers is now official: Kindle for Android. Unfortunately, it's not quite ready to download. Amazon's free Kindle ebook reader -- already out for Mac, PC, BlackBerry, and iDevices -- won't launch until later this summer. When it does, users of Android 1.6 and above (with SD card) will have the ability to search, browse, and purchase (without exiting the app) any of the half million books in the Kindle Store. Like the other apps, Kindle for Android features Whispersync to keep your bookmarks, last page read, notes, and highlights synchronized across all your Kindle-enabled devices. Expect to see this demonstrated at Google I/O starting tomorrow.

Kindle DX failing out of Darden Business School

According to Ars Technica, Darden Business School students are unhappy with the Amazon Kindle DX in terms of academic usefulness. That's not to say that they're down on the DX in general: there's pretty high support amongst Darden students for the DX as a personal e-reader. It's just not quite the classroom supplement that Darden administration had hoped it would be.

Not to be outdone by Nook, Amazon has released the Kindle 2.5 firmware. The new software adds a number of interesting features including the ability to share passages of books with your Facebook and Twitter friends providing that, unlike mine, yours are literate (don't worry, they won't be able to read this). The firmware will launch later next month and includes the following features:

The 2.5 software update for Kindle and Kindle DX is coming soon. We are rolling out the new software update to a limited group of Kindle users and plan a broad release in late May 2010. Check back here for updates on the release schedule. Here's a list of the coming enhancements: Collections: Organize your books and documents into one or more collections. PDF Pan and Zoom: Zoom into PDFs and pan around to easily view small print and detailed tables or graphics.

Nook passes Kindle sales in March

Well look at this: new kid on the book, Barnes & Noble's Nook ereader, just surpassed Amazon Kindle sales in March. Obviously the Nook is a bit newer than the Kindle and those who were going to buy a Kindle probably have already, but it also looks like B&N's retail network is also driving sales. Digitimes reports that 53% of e-book readers shipped were Nooks while 1.43 million ereaders were sold in Q1 2010. They're estimating that total ereader sales will reach 11 million by year's end.

We've shown you an N64 emulator running on a hacked iPad just a few days ago, and now it's time to see how Super Mario Bros. would look like on a Kindle. And the short answer is that the 1985 NES game would look awful: it's slow, it's in black and white only, it has no sound, it's buggy (since when can Mario kill Goombas by bumping into them?), and apparently, you can't even control Mario properly. Not that this is surprising.

According to Best-eReaders.com, Barnes & Noble just sent out an email to its business partners, announcing that will start paying a 6% commission fee on sales of nook devices, ebooks, warranties and accessories. Commissions will be paid on shipped orders only.

There's no doubt about it: the iPad is the elephant in the ereader room but there's one thing I'm certain: it won't kill off the ebook readers. Amazon just took another length in the Kindle's already strong position on the ereader battlefield with the announcement of Kindle Apps for Tablet Computers. This app picks up where the standard desktop Kindle program drops off. Just like nearly every other desktop application, the original PC and Mac Kindle app isn't optimized for finger navigation with small buttons and drop down menus. Plus, it's not pretty and almost utilitarian in design. The upcoming tablet program, however, takes styling cues from Apple's iBooks and looks finger friendly enough. This is huge. No longer can the iPad claim dominance on the color ebook world. The upcoming Kindle tablet program will be able to run on presumably any PC tablet and still sync to the other Kindle apps, mobile or otherwise. Knock "color ebook reader" off of the iPad's list of Pros. The tablet race just got a bit more interesting.

It might be months after Kindle for Windows launched but the OS X app is finally ready for Mac users. Well, most Mac users. The computer must be an Intel chipset and running OS 10.5 or higher. But if that’s you, click through and download the 22MB file to start getting your ebook reading on.

All the Apple marks are excited about the iPad. Not me, but whatever. What I am excited about, though, is seeing consumers use the items they've bought in the manner of their choosing. Say you've bought a bunch of books from the Amazon Kindle store. (Don't tell Devin!) Those books are only "supposed" to work with the Kindle and the various Kindle readers, but with a bit of work you can read them wherever you want—yes, including on your iPad.

In January Amazon offered select customers a free Kindle of sorts – they had to pay for it, but if they didn’t like it they could get a full refund and keep the device. It turns out that was just a test run for a much more ambitious program. A reliable source tells us Amazon wants to give a free Kindle to every Amazon Prime subscriber.

Just as soon as they can work out how to do it without losing money.

Amazon Prime is a subscription product that gives customers free two day shipping on everything they buy from Amazon. The current fee is $79/year.

Amazon fighting with publishers over pricing

Apparently all is not well in e-book land. In an unusual move, publisher Macmillan took out an ad in the Publishers Marketplace magazine protesting the tactics being used by Amazon regarding pricing. The issue is Macmillan is trying to price at $9.99, and Amazon is trying to lock the lowest price at $15 per title.

Looks like 2010 is turning out to be the year of the e-book reader. I'm not sure at what point these are going to stop being news, but here we go again. Insdream is launching the SX601 which seems to borrow some significant design ideas from another rather popular e-book reader. The Insdream does use a different type of screen from the source material (can you say Kindle), but looks pretty much the same otherwise.

A hacker, Labba, and his buddies have cracked the Kindle's ebook DRM, essentially allowing folks to extract the text of Amazon's AZW files into a PDF for viewing on any reader. The hackers have reverse engineered the ebook code and very close to a formal, software-based solution.

We all now know that Kindle is more than an e-book for Amazon -- it's an entire digital content platform with aims on world domination, which explains why the company has felt more than comfortable releasing software-based readers for other platforms. To that end, they've announced that Kindle for iPhone is now ready for download in over 60 additional countries, which probably overlaps as a pretty beefy subset of the list of countries to which the actual Kindle is shipping. And, unlike the real thing, you'll actually be able to browse the full web with your iPhone -- not to say that HTML on an E Ink display was ever a very satisfying experience to start.
