iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsWelcome to the latest installment of our annual tradition: the iPhone launch day queue experience in pictorial form. London's getting the party started early (not as early as some, admittedly) with a sizable crowd turning the corner from the Apple Store at Regent Street, but we'll keep this post updated with imagery from all over the place. Wouldn't mind if you helped us out with a few of your own pics, either. You know where to send them in by now, and once you've done that, feel free to slide past the break to see how everyone else is doing it.
Update: Now with reports from San Francisco!
Update 2: NY joins the fray!
Update 3: We added some of the more interesting reader-submitted stories.
Update 4: Reports from Palo Alto and San Jose, California!
Update 5: London's doors have swung open and we're now busy activating our brand new Apple phones.
Update 6: Woz and his Segway make their regular appearance at the San Jose Valley Fair Apple Store.
Update 7: We're adding a bunch of reader reports. Even as Apple opens its doors to pre-orderers in the US, the lines remain crazy.Continue reading iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)

iPhone 4 arrives at Walmart (update: and Best Buy!)
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsCheck out that sweet, sweet box. Yes folks, we seem to have received our very first in-the-cardboard picture of the retail iPhone 4 out in the wild. We don't work at Walmart, so we can't verify this one for ourselves, but our tipster says Apple's latest phone has just landed in the big box retailer's storehouses.
P.S. -- Before you start frothing at the mouth, the CDMA coding on the box in the background relates to an LG 290C handset also stocked by Walmart.
Update: A shot of a Best Buy arrival is past the break.Continue reading iPhone 4 arrives at Walmart (update: and Best Buy!)

HTC Legend debuts on Virgin Mobile in Canada, glances furtively southwards
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsThe phone, the myth, the Legend has just become available over in Canada, giving North Americans their first taste of that aluminum unibody construction. It's looking highly likely that this is the same handset we saw gracing the FCC's pages not too long ago, indicating that Yanks should be getting in on the fun relatively soon as well. AT&T already let one HTC cat slip out of the bag today, guess this confirms the Liberty won't be feeling lonely in Ma Bell's Android cupboard whenever it does launch. And hey, Canadian friends, just think of the Legend as consolation for your teams not sniffing the Stanley Cup the past three years.HTC Legend debuts on Virgin Mobile in Canada, glances furtively southwards originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 18:17:00 EST. Samsung Galaxy S taking UK pre-orders, Vodafone promises June 15 delivery
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsWere you looking forward to purchasing a 16GB smartphone with unique screen technology and an app-centric OS this month? Great, because the Galaxy S pre-order has now gone live in the UK, offering a delivery only four days away from now and prices that are pretty much par for the superphone course. If you want the Super AMOLED machine for free, minimum monthly cost will be steep, starting out at £35 ($51) a pop over 24 months or £40 ($58) over 18 lunar cycles. Both those deals furnish you with 900 minutes of talk time, unlimited texts, and 1GB of 3G data, but the latter works out to be the better value as it tallies up to £720 ($1,045) in total investment over the full term. Then again, most of what Vodafone has on tap compares favorably to the madness O2 is asking iPhone 4 buyers to pony up.Samsung Galaxy S taking UK pre-orders, Vodafone promises June 15 delivery originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 02:05:00 EST. iPhone 4 at Best Buy for launch, at least 45 devices per store?
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsThe iPhone 4 at Best Buy on launch day? It'd be no surprise, really -- after all, the retail giant had both the iPhone 3GS and iPad right from the get-go. We just got word from one of our trusted sources that Best Buy will indeed have the newfangled phone at launch, and even better, we've got some details on the inventory. A minimum of 30 units for the 32GB device and 15 of the 16GB will apparently be available at each store, and employee purchases are banned at launch. We can't say for sure without more paperwork, but this source has been pretty reliable before -- if nothing else, it should give you a decent idea just how early you should be preparing to wait in line.
Oh, and RadioShack fanatics? Yeah, we've heard you can head down there for launch, too, but we don't yet have a clue as to how many will be in stock.iPhone 4 at Best Buy for launch, at least 45 devices per store? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 22:34:00 EST. HTC EVO 4G launch day line watch
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsYou've had the day circled on your calendar for nearly a month, you've seen its insides, you've seen it rooted, and you've even witnessed Froyo running on its massive 4.3-inch screen. Now the time has finally come to actually own the EVO. As is our time-honored tradition with galactically significant product launches, we're starting up a little photo essay here showing the progression of lines outside Sprint stores through this most auspicious of days. Only the trick here is that you'll be doing our writing for us, a thousand words at a time. Join us after the break for the pictures and don't forget -- a lot of stores will be opening early to sate demand.Continue reading HTC EVO 4G launch day line watch

Samsung Galaxy S launches in Europe, hitting US ‘later this year’
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsSo that simultaneous global launch isn't going to materialize quite as we were told, but Samsung is indeed bringing the Galaxy S to the widest possible audience. The Korean giant has made its 2010 flagship official in Europe today, meaning you should be able to sign your life away to your favorite carrier in exchange for it very soon indeed. We're told the 4-incher will be making its American debut later in the year, though a protracted delay appears unlikely. Pricing on the Galaxy S might not turn out to be all that democratic, but its comprehensive choice of more than 100 global carriers sure will be, and might suggest we'll get a choice of networks when the phone finally makes its way Stateside. Hang tight, gringos, not long to go now.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy S launches in Europe, hitting US 'later this year'

Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsAs official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we've all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen's backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That's only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let's retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia's higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we're still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we'd totally understand.Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 May 2010 07:27:00 EST. Symbian^3 to launch on non-Nokia handset, courtesy of ‘Asian vendor’
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No Comments
Well, here's a bit of thunder theft for you. Nokia's N8 launch is still firmly wedged in Q3 2010, but according to Symbian Foundation Executive Director Lee Williams, other handset makers are not going to hang around and wait for it to be the vanguard Symbian^3 device. Instead, says Lee, the first phone with the overhauled software will be provided by an unnamed Asian vendor -- we're thinking LG or Samsung, with the latter being more likely as it has more history with Symbian. This seems to be mostly on account of the new OS being pretty much ready for market right now, so whoever's bringing the goods should be doing so in the very near future.Symbian^3 to launch on non-Nokia handset, courtesy of 'Asian vendor' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 May 2010 05:53:00 EST. Samsung Galaxy S will hit Asia in June, get Froyo later
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsSamsung has just let the cat out of the bag regarding its top of the line Galaxy S, which is set to make its global debut in Asian markets this June. Unsubsidized, this 4-inch beastie will cost you S$1,098 (or around $775), which might be a little on the steep side, but then this is one of only a pair of Super AMOLED handsets on the market and Samsung makes the other one. And in case you want an alternative closer to home, Amazon's German portal is now listing the Galaxy S for pre-order at €649, which works out to about the same price. The best news from today, however, is probably Samsung's official confirmation that the phone will be getting an Android 2.2 upgrade at some point in its future. No specifics are given as yet, but we'll take our Froyo whenever and wherever we can get it.

Dell Streak official: exclusive to O2 UK (update: launches on June 4)
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsLet's all feign surprise now, as Dell has just gone official with its worst kept, though perhaps sexiest, secret ever. The former Mini 5 has been christened the Streak and is launching at the beginning of next month. The UK will be getting the first bite at this cherry, with the rest of Europe following soon thereafter and the US a disappointingly distant third with a launch "later this summer." If you've been living under a (Round) Rock, this is Dell's big foray into the smartphone market: a 5-inch supersized Android handset, housing a 1GHz Snapdragon, a 5 megapixel cam, 16GB of built-in memory (expandable to 48GB via MicroSD) and a customized UI. Curiously, Dell's opting to market the Streak as "the ultimate portable tablet pc" and would prefer that this device, albeit fully equipped to carry out cellular calls like a phone, not be called a smartphone.
We got a chance to play with it during a briefing in London recently, and frankly, aside from the snazzier paintjob, there's nothing new to report. Just like the prototype unit we've previewed to exhaustion, the device on hand was running Android 1.6 and Dell's skinning team hadn't yet laid on the goodies that we've been promised. The battery is the same 1,530mAh cell as before, and we even managed to get the browser to crash in the exact same fashion that our own Streak exhibits on occasion. Now that's consistency. We're not being told the specific Android version that the Streak will ship with, but a couple of flavors are being mulled over right now. Till we get more info, we suggest sitting back, relaxing, and perusing the gallery below for the roaring red number that's currently on show. It won't be available at launch -- you can have any color so long as it's black -- but "a range of colors and designs" will swiftly follow to sate any aesthetic concerns. Video and full press release after the break.
Update: The Carphone Warehouse listing for the Streak shows Android 1.6 as the OS with an "OTA upgrade available soon." Pair that with word direct from Dell that Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 are coming "later this year," and you can connect your own dots [Thanks, Azza].
Update 2: O2's website now has a precise date for us: June 4.Continue reading Dell Streak official: exclusive to O2 UK (update: launches on June 4)
