BlackBerry Bold 9800 gets some glamour shots, OS 6 gets a 16 minute video walkthrough
Posted on June 5, 2010 | No CommentsThe verdict is still out on OS 6, but there's hardly any doubting the assured design and form factor that RIM has gone with for the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider. Our latest look at the device comes courtesy of BlackBerry Times in China, who has what appears to be an early version of the device. They expect the smooth plastic back to be replaced by the leather look RIM favors on its higher end devices, but otherwise the unit looks to be pretty solid and far along. The Google-translated Chinese seems to confirm again that the screen is not SurePress. Not a lot of landmark news to be gleaned here, but we're mostly stoked about these delicious bokeh-filled shots of device -- it's really looking good, and the comparison shot with other recent BlackBerrys (check after the break) is rather helpful for sizing this thing up.

Sony Ericsson prepping a 5-inch Android phone with QWERTY keyboard? (updated)

What we're looking at here is supposedly a Sony Ericsson smartphone, which seems to sport a five-inch screen and a hinged slide-out keyboard like the HTC Shift and the Eking S515. Even if this prototype turns out to be legit, our tipster -- who has a solid track record -- says it's only running on Android 2.1 and that development is in its infancy while low-level drivers are being tested. Well, we can probably wait, except we're also told that internally SE doesn't appear to have any plans for 2.2 yet. Cue the angry tomatoes and eggs, but bring us a PSP phone any day and we'll call off the rally.
Update: We've received word from a second highly-trusted source who says that the display is 5.5 inches (too big to fit in the front pocket), and runs a clean Android 2.1 install. Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsSteve Jobs didn't seem too upset over the story of the lost / stolen iPhone 4 last night at D8, so we're sure he won't mind that yet more parts for his next-gen phone have leaked out -- this time PowerBookMedic.com has scored the white version of the casing. As usual, the Engadget staff is now in a fierce and somewhat disturbingly violent debate over the relative style merits of black and white iPhones, so don't look for us to get much done for the rest of the day. Jack Wong, why does he tease us so? If you haven't been following the M8 forums as religiously as you used to, you might have missed the news that our man in Guangdong leaked the definitive blurrycam photos of what appears to be the Meizu M9 Android handset. Not long after leaking the pics he deleted the post and closed all threads, explaining: "sorry, my fault. i am just too excited and wanna share with your guys." Although his cavalier attitude might end up breaking a few hearts 'round here, we can definitely appreciate his enthusiasm. Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsiPhone 4 parts just keep on dribbling out of China and turning up around the world -- this time it's the next-gen phone's outer case on a video from iPhone Portgual. The site actually has two cases, which it says were purchased by a reader in China, and while they look genuine enough, we obviously can't tell for certain whether they're real. In any event, at this rate we'll have enough leaked parts to assemble the entire damn thing by the time Steve takes the stage at WWDC to announce it in a few days -- or hey, maybe he'll just show it off at D8 tonight. Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsYou've seen it in San Jose, you've seen plenty of it in Vietnam, and now, apparently, you're seeing the iPhone 4G display waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven't been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone part in their paws, but hey, that's what they claim. The guys from superiphone.cz have gone above and beyond the leaker's call of duty, by taking the supposed next-gen screen under a microscope and figuring out its pixel density and display technology. According to them, the new iPhone will sport an IPS panel, much like the other handheld device Apple introduced this year, with a cool 960 x 640 resolution. This quadruples the total number of pixels from the iPhone 3GS -- making rescaling of current apps a straightforward affair -- while also giving Apple the right to claim the highest pixel density yet seen on a phone. You'll find similarly zoomed-in pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch screens at the source, and the answers to all your iPhone-related questions at WWDC in a few days' time.

AndroidGuys has a purportedly leaked Samsung handset it's calling the i897 that looks very similar to the Galaxy S specwise: 4-inch AMOLED display, Android 2.1 (for the moment anyway), and 5 megapixel camera. It's built around a Snapdragon processor apparently, and even goes well with chicken. Now hit up the source for a few more pics.

Motorola’s 4.3-inch Droid Shadow found in a unicorn gym?
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsColor us highly skeptical of the backstory, but Gizmodo claims to have received a picture of Motorola's rumored 4.3-inch Droid Shadow. The device above was supposedly left behind at a Verizon corporate gym in Washington. As the story is told, a gym employee managed to snap the photo above and identify an HDMI jack, 8 megapixel camera, Snapdragon processor, and 16GB of storage before the handset was remotely locked and the owner returned to claim it. Suspiciously, there's only one photo of the device shown at precisely the same angle as the supposedly leaked "getting started" image seen three days ago -- right, just enough time to cobble together a Photoshop. The refined Motoblur UI seems to align though so who knows... really, who knows?

LG’s Windows Phone 7 caught in some early packaging, to be dubbed GW910? (update: video!)
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsLG hasn't been what you'd call "super secretive" with its first Windows Phone 7 hardware (codenamed LG Panther), after all, the phone was flashed on the Engadget Show as the first official hardware for the new OS. Still, a prototype of the phone, meant for developers to start testing their apps on, has made its way into the wild and might shed some new light on the handset. It's been spotted with some full-on packaging (which is apparently non-final, even the Windows Phone 7 logo is wrong) and a "GW910" model number, which might be the final name for the handset -- or at least its internal call sign. It's also dangerously close in sound to the GW990, bringing back painful memories of that Moorestown phone's cancellation. Other notes accompanying the leak state that while the OS still has plenty of rough edges and is being updated with new builds almost every other day, it's "more or less feature complete" and very fast. More BlackBerry Bold 9800 pics surface: AT&T and virtual keyboard in, SurePress out?
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsYou might've been intrigued by the previous show of the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider, but this new series of images blows those all out of water. The Berry Fix has a plethora of pics for your perusal, chief among them a showing of the virtual keyboard to complement the physical QWERTY. We gotta say, every announce of good design sense lost on the 9670 must have been spent on this guy; we're really intrigued by this one. If that wasn't enough, we've got two more details that'll tickle your fancy: an AT&T splash screen for one, and claims from the article's author (via Twitter) that RIM's not using SurePress here. That'd actually be quite a relief, but until we get our hands on the sucker, let's just curb our enthusiasm, mkay?

HTC Hengshan and Huashan Windows phones make another online cameo (update)
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsThe Android-powered Vision isn't HTC's only possible user agent-borne leak from this week. Now comes word of two potential Windows Phone 7 devices , the HuaShan and T5588 HengShan. The former has a 480 x 800 screen (no obvious relation to the Mondrian spotted yet) while the latter sports the more typical 320 x 480. Beyond that and an apparent lack of physical keyboards, we're kind of in the dark here -- assuming this turns out to be legit, but those names popped up previously on a roadmap with a 4.3-inch / 3.4-inch screen size, respectively. At any rate, whether or not it's this pair, we definitely have at least some HTC Windows Phone 7 devices to look forward to by the end of 2010.
Update: Perhaps we spoke too soon on the platform of choice -- as WMExperts points out, other parts of the profile hint at not Windows Phone 7, but actually the soon-to-be classic Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsAs our extensive KIRF library shows, China's one wild country that can make almost anything you
don'twant, so don't mind us while we inspect this new finding with extra caution. This particular Chinese online seller not only claims to have parts for the next-gen iPhone, but also one white face plate -- something not seen on iPhones thus far. While we drool over the thought of an all white Apple handheld, there are still questions to be answered here: the seller wasn't able to explain what that silver bit above the speaker is, nor have we seen white back plates to match this. Furthermore, we were given a "maybe" for a bulk order of 15 to 20 units, which is quite a lot for something that's not even out yet, but we were told over the phone that there's always a back door to Foxconn as long as you wave cash at someone. Not that you should engage in such risky business, plus this piece's authenticity will be revealed in about three weeks' time, anyway. One more shot after the break.

HTC Wildfire escapes from Yellow Mountain riding Android 2.1 (update: official)
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsWhoops, a press conference in Germany seems to have inadvertently set HTC's unannounced Wildfire handset loose. The new candybar brings quadband GSM and 900/2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA radios to the Android 2.1 party powered by the ol' Qualcomm MSM7225 processor running at 525MHz. Spec-wise we're looking at HTC's Sense UI running atop a 3.2-inch QVGA touchscreen, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS/AGPS, Blueooth 2.1+EDR, 512MB Flash and 384MB of RAM, and microSD expansion. Hey HTC, anything you want to make official here?
Update: And it's official. Press release touting a Q3 release for Europe and Asia after the break.

HTC Mondrian with 1.3GHz Snapdragon detailed in leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM?
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsAs expected, the official-looking Windows Phone 7 OS ROM leaked over the weekend is already yielding results. Pictured above is an image extracted from the "oemavatar.cab." Now that could be a generic Windows Phone 7 image or it could be the HTC Mondrian already seen referenced by the 100MB file. The kids at XDA-Developers have also pieced together specs from an ongoing analysis of the registry and RGU files. So far they've spotted references to a 4.3-inch WVGA (480x800) display from Optrex and a 1.3GHz QSD8650A/B Snapdragon from Qualcomm -- a chipset, you might recall, supporting multi-mode UMTS and CDMA 3G connectivity. It's also packing a digital compass but seems to lack a keyboard. Mind you, none of this is absolute but it's very very intriguing.

New MacBook specs leak out of Vietnam

Looks like we get a peek at an unannounced update to the MacBook a little bit early. The update (showing up on the label as MacBook7,1) has the same CPU and GPU as the entry level MacBook Pro, but assuming Apple keeps the pricing the same, it should be available for $999.
