HTC EVO 4G meets magnetic macro lens, shoots gorgeous closeups

As phone accessories go, protruding lens attachments are rarely top of our wishlist, but this one here might just alter our perspective a little bit. Good and EVO have gone to the trouble of obtaining a magnetically mountable macro lens to test out how well the EVO 4G's camera performs with a little more optical prowess. The answer is that in spite of the inevitably goofy appearance, the jumbo Android handset delivered some highly impressive imagery, getting really up close and personal with its subjects and picking out exquisitely tiny details. The results are certainly of a caliber unobtainable with the default optics and well worth checking out -- the source link is where that party's at.

Nikon’s lens rebate program starting on the 28th

Get that wallet ready, Nikon's annual instant rebate program is starting on the 28th. Pretty much always a good deal, Nikon loves to tempt the weak with their instant rebate offers on lenses and gear that they roll out on a yearly basis. Case in point - I bought my D300 back in 2008 (with the oh so popular 18-200 VR) and justified it to my wife as a "really great deal" because of the rebate. Luckily she's a patient woman, and we're still married.

FACTRON SIMPLEX: $200, lens-friendly duralumin iPhone case

Duralumin, an aluminum alloy used in airship frames and auto body panels, isn't necessarily the first material springing to one's mind when it comes to cell phones cases. But Japan-based Factron actually used it for its so-called FACTRON SIMPLEX, an iPhone case that lets you use a number of lenses (sold separately) with your iPhone camera.

  • iPhone camera mod for magnification: because you can

iPhone camera mod for magnification: because you can

We've thought before how nice it might be to have some powers of magnification on the iPhone's cam... but are we going to go out and mod our unit? Probably not, but that doesn't mean we can't admire someone else's work. Taking various lenses and attaching them to the lid of a jar, the modder quite carefully built a contraption that looks a little "hobo Steampunk" to us, but we're still fairly impressed with this little gadget. Hit the read link for full, detailed instructions and more photos if you'd like to make one of your own.

DIY: build your own tilt-shift lens

Buying an actual tilt-shift lens will run you over $1000, depending on what camera you own. Of course, instead of buying a new or used lens, you can just build your own out of some PVC pipe, hose clamps, rubber hose, and a cheap lens off of an auction site.
