US Cellular adds HTC Desire and BlackBerry Bold in August, teases BlackBerry 9670 for ‘later this year’

We were extremely close to cramping our sarcasm muscle with all the faux excitement we had to drum up for the 3.2-inch Acclaim, but US Cellular has now come back with word that it'll soon count HTC's Desire among its roster of phones. The Desire, which is mooted to be coming to other smaller carriers like Cellular South, will debut in August alongside the BlackBerry Bold. We're more excited, however, to find US Cellular promising it'll offer "a BlackBerry flip smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard" later this year. That sounds like RIM's slightly unorthodox 9670 to us, and will probably form the second part of the BB maker's pledged introduction of two new handsets. US Cellular's 2010 device lineup refresh will be completed with a pair more Androids, courtesy of LG and Samsung. The former is said to have a "large touch screen and slide-out, ergonomically-designed QWERTY keyboard," while the latter is only described as "highly-anticipated." LG leaks in Brazil include Android-powered C710, cute T310
Posted on June 20, 2010 | No CommentsBrazil's CelularCafe looks to have scored a four-pack of fresh leaks out of LG, most notably a new Android handset being called the C710 that looks suspiciously like Verizon's Ally but apparently lacks a QWERTY keyboard, steps up to a 5 megapixel cam, and includes 802.11n WiFi, a new spec sheet line item that's been picking up steam with higher-end smartphones as of late. Next, there's the T300, a low-end full touchscreen device with a 2 megapixel cam that the site has taken to calling the Cookie Light; next to it lies the slightly-spiffier T310 (pictured) with a larger display and irresistibly cute styling. Finally, there's a forgettable A130 clamshell with EDGE data and an FM radio with recording capability -- needless to say, not the most exciting of the bunch. No word on when, or where, we might see any of these for sale.

AT&T’s LG Prime and Pantech Ease in the wild?
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsIf the Pursuit isn't up your alley, it looks like Pantech's got a slightly higher-end phone in store for you: the Ease. We know next to nothing about it, but it's clearly got a more spacious keyboard than its kid brother -- and the silver highlights are a little more businesslike than green and blue. From LG, we've got a phone called the Prime that looks as though it could be a keyboardless (and arguably better-looking) version of the Vu Plus. No dates or prices on these, but dummies are out and about, so it can't be long. See more in the gallery below.

Update: We've been told by two independent sources that the Ease is actually geared toward the older set -- first we've really seen a full toucshcreen phone do that -- and the Prime is destined for AT&T's prepaid GoPhone service with a 2 megapixel cam. Thanks, guys!

Microsoft helping OEMs develop unique Windows Phone 7 apps
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsHere's the simple truth about touchscreen smartphones: it's the software, dummy. Just look around at all the flagship handsets... other than a choice of with or without a QWERTY, today's handsets all look pretty much the same and are built using the same off-the-shelf components with very few exceptions. That's why we see so much skinning on Android handsets -- that's how manufacturers like Motorola (Motoblur), Samsung (TouchWiz), and HTC (Sense) differentiate themselves with consumers. But how's that going to work for Windows Phone 7 devices with Microsoft boxing OEMs in with a narrow set of hardware and software guidelines that restrict them from modifying the user interface? Easy, Microsoft is going to help them write unique apps. At least that's what this June 1st Microsoft job posting for a senior Windows Phone software developer says:
The position would be "working directly with a top Korean cellular phone manufacturer, who has made a large commitment to Windows Phone." Uh, would that be LG or Samsung, we're guessing the former. It'll be interesting to see if these apps are enough to differentiate one touchscreen handset from another. Even more exciting will be watching the homebrew community attempt to hack the manufacturer-specific apps into different handsets in order to create the ultimate Windows Phone 7 superphone... or Frakenphone as the case may be. Regardless, it's clear that Microsoft isn't leaving anything to chance as manfacturers prepare to launch their first devices running Redmond's virgin OS."We are looking for a strong and experienced developer to help the OEM to design and develop applications that make their devices stand out in the marketplace. You will also help them to bring new phones to market."

Twilight-customized LG GD510 set to Eclipse all other phones in France

Coming with eight tie-in wallpapers and that embellished back cover, this version of the GD510 -- a thoroughly unexciting featurephone with ambitions above its 3-inch, resistive touchscreen station -- has just become available over in France, for free on contracts with Orange or in exchange for €199 ($238). As a bonus temptation, LG is also throwing in a free copy of Twilight: New Moon, though we doubt anyone buying this phone will have seen that movie less than a dozen times.

T-Mobile’s LG Sentio launching on June 30
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsLG and T-Mobile had only been committing to a Summer release for their three-pack of new models, but now we've got a little more guidance on the most notable of the trio. The Sentio -- a low-end full touchscreen dumbphone with 3G and social networking goodies on board -- will be available on June 30 in all channels, so if you're a "connected socializer" aged 16 to 29 who's "in search of their first touchscreen phone," you might have a look. As long as you're cool with navy blue paired with silver accents, anyhow.

LG kicks off T-Mobile relationship with Sentio, dLite, and GS170
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsDon't look for any crazy Android hardware here, but these three dumbphones are more notable than you might think: they mark the first time LG has hooked up with T-Mobile USA, believe it or not. The Sentio (pictured left) is the most interesting of the trio, featuring a 3-inch touchscreen, 3 megapixel cam with video capture, and support for visual voicemail. The dLite flip (middle) offers a nifty concealed LED array upfront -- a feature you see occasionally on Japanese and domestic Korean handsets, but rarely on American models -- along with a 2.8-inch display and a pair of color choices ("bubblegum" and "electric blue"). Both the Sentio and dLite also feature T-Mobile's Social Buzz app for aggregating social network status updates, a helpful feature that's quickly becoming the norm in this class of device. Finally, you've got the GS170 flip -- a phone so basic that LG apparently didn't deem it worthy of a proper name -- offering a VGA cam, Bluetooth 2.1, and "large visible keys." LG Optimus Q launching with Android 1.6? (update: yep!)
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsYou'd like to think that any Android device launching these days would come equipped with an absolute bare minimum of Eclair, but that's not the case; Dell's Streak, for example, will be coming out of the gate with Android 1.6 -- and seemingly so will LG's LU2300 Optimus Q. We were just handed this rather interesting spec sheet that says the phone's loaded with 1.6 on no uncertain terms, a stark change from LG's official (and someone unhelpful) line that it may or may not launch with 2.1. At the very least, we'd hope that an upgrade is in the works -- but hey, at least it comes with LG's trick Air Sync service, which is a pretty sweet deal.

LG and iriver unveil the LB4400: the Korean Zunephone without the Zune (video)

Unfortunately, the Korean outfit responsible for about half of all digital audio players sold in its home country has all but disappeared from the international stage. Today it returns with the jointly developed LG-LB4400 musicphone. As the name indicates, LG is the muscle behind the cellphone internals (and apparently the industrial design) whereas iriver contributed the media player and UI elements. Specwise, we're looking at a 2.8-inch WQVGA LCD display, 3 megapixel camera, DMB TV, Dolby Surround Mobile, and support for a wide range of audio codecs including FLAC and APE. No word on price or availability but we've got a slow-loading video for you after the break.

LG flexible display patent application includes fever-dreams of future devices
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsWe're still a ways out from real-world applications of flexible displays, but LG is preparing for the future: it's just filed a patent application that details changing a flexible display's touch sensitivty depending on the state of the display, and it's included some intriguing drawings of potential devices with the application. Specifically, the patent application includes claims referencing cylindrical, prism, folding, "rolling," "freestyle," and "hybrid" body shapes, which all sound pretty intense -- especially the hybrid body, which is a "combination of the folding body and rolling body." Of course, patent applications don't always turn into granted patents, let alone shipping products, but if you're in the mood to stare wistfully at line art and dream about the future, the full PDF is at the source link.

LG’s Windows Phone 7 caught in some early packaging, to be dubbed GW910? (update: video!)
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsLG hasn't been what you'd call "super secretive" with its first Windows Phone 7 hardware (codenamed LG Panther), after all, the phone was flashed on the Engadget Show as the first official hardware for the new OS. Still, a prototype of the phone, meant for developers to start testing their apps on, has made its way into the wild and might shed some new light on the handset. It's been spotted with some full-on packaging (which is apparently non-final, even the Windows Phone 7 logo is wrong) and a "GW910" model number, which might be the final name for the handset -- or at least its internal call sign. It's also dangerously close in sound to the GW990, bringing back painful memories of that Moorestown phone's cancellation. Other notes accompanying the leak state that while the OS still has plenty of rough edges and is being updated with new builds almost every other day, it's "more or less feature complete" and very fast. LG Fathom VS750 review

Falling somewhere between the flash of the Chocolate and no-frills, no surprises industrial design of the recently launched Ally, LG has outed the Fathom (aka VS750) with little fanfare. Featuring a mercifully unadorned WinMo 6.5.3 (save for wallpaper, pictured above, designed by a certain Vera Wang), a 1GHz CPU, quad band GSM, and a handful of AC adapters for charging all over Europe and the UK, this is a device clearly meant to go global. LG Vu Plus coming to AT&T on June 6 for $150

The most notable change is the addition of a landscape slider QWERTY keyboard, but one of the Vu's hallmark's -- support for AT&T's FLO-based Mobile TV service -- carries over for $9.99 a month with a free 7-day trial subscription. It's got a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus cam with video recording, AT&T Video Share compatibility, and microSD expansion if the phone's internal 50MB just aren't cutting it. Enter the LG Fathom, a 1GHz touchscreen device with a 3.2-inch screen, slide out QWERTY keyboard, WiFi, a microSD slot (for up to 16GB of storage), and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The device will be available for pre-orders on May 27th, with a street date of June 3rd, and will run you $149.99 after a two year contract and $100 mail-in rebate. LG Ally release pushed back a week for reasons unknown

You remember those Android 2.1-powered LG Allys that were supposed to go on sale with Big Red earlier this week? Yeah, well, they didn't, and Verizon's site is still showing them as pre-orders. We're not sure what's going on there, but pre-orders are being extended through the 26th with sales commencing on the 27th; folks that have already pre-ordered the phone are apparently getting emails explaining the situation and letting them know that they'll be "the first to receive the phone upon initial availability on or after May 27th." The "or after" part there seems to be giving them a loophole in case they need another delay -- so this could be a last-minute software issue, supply problems, some sort of wacky marketing stunt, or a stunning heist involving the theft of every Ally that has been imported to the United States thus far.
