Ulysse Nardin reveals $129K Chairman Diamond Edition
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsPretty much anything can be made unfathomably expensive by encrusting it with diamonds -- so when you start with an object that's already rather pricey, you're bound to start brushing up against "only for Russian billionaires" territory. Indeed, we'd argue that Ulysse Nardin's new Chairman Diamond Edition fits that bill nicely, coming in at $129,000 for a combination of 18-carat white gold and over 2,000 diamonds with ceramic trim. You might recall that the plain-vanilla Chairman is already an interesting phone, featuring 32GB of storage, a 3.2-inch touchscreen, Android, biometric scanner, and most notably, a watch-like self-winding mechanism around back that supplements the phone's battery power. Of course, when your phone runs into the six figures, we doubt that paying the electric bill to get this thing charged on a nightly basis will be much of an issue.

Versace Unique launched, Vertu put on notice

Teaming up with the ModeLabs outfit that's already quite familiar with building lush phone-like pieces of handheld jewelery, Versace has just announced its first foray into the world of touchscreen communicators. It's quite the striking debut, too, coming with a sapphire crystal screen that is apparently the largest single piece ever offered in a consumer device, as well as gold plating and "high-tech ceramic" construction options. Hand assembly is an obvious standard feature, as is the Medusa-embossed leather back. LG is responsible for putting together the innards, including the 3-inch display and 5 megapixel camera, and worry not, we understand a black version will be available too. Look for the Unique in the usual places you find wildly overpriced gear starting next month.

Vertu Ascent 2010: same pretension, new specs
Posted on May 10, 2010 | No CommentsVertu's not big on press releases, so you'll have to forgive us for missing this a few weeks back -- but it seems that Nokia's little outpost of opulent, over-the-top luxury has just released an updated version of its time-tested Ascent range. The so-called Ascent 2010 features a 5 megapixel camera (up from the Ascent Ti's 3), 8GB or 32GB of on-board storage depending on the version (up from 4GB), and quadband 3G. It also has AGPS with preloaded maps (Vertu's carefully avoiding the plebian Ovi Maps branding here, but we'd imagine it's more or less the same thing), a 2-inch QVGA sapphire crystal display, and a sweet chronograph display (pictured) that undoubtedly makes the phone worth every one of the thousands of dollars you shell out for it. You can pick it up now in your choice of aluminum or titanium bodies with a variety of colored leather accents from luxury retailers around the globe -- and don't forget to pack your checkbook before you hop in the Roller and head down there, obviously.

Mobiado keeps going with the analog clock meme, intros Professional 105GMT Stealth and Antique

When you hear "ability to see 3 time zones simultaneously" quoted as a feature on a phone, you generally don't expect two of those three to be expressed as analog Swiss movements -- unless you own Mobiado's absurd Professional 105GMT, of course, which features two old-fashioned clocks directly below the keypad. Weird, yes; excessive, most definitely, but excess is what luxury phones tend to be all about these days, and in that regard, the 105GMT definitely fits the bill. To that end, Mobiado has just introduced two new versions of the model, the Antique -- with watch faces crafted in rare Cocobolo wood -- and the Stealth, which is as "murdered out" as a phone gets (as the kids would say) thanks to gunmetal black treatment everywhere you look. Both phones are hard to find and even harder to pay for with stickers that run into the thousands of dollars, but the good news is that if you're weird enough to drop that kind of coin on a phone, we bet you probably don't care that it's only got a 2 megapixel camera.

In the market for an over-priced luxury handset? Do you equate luxury with a brand name, snakeskin, perhaps even a feature phone with all but the barest of "features?" You're in luck! Once again looking to give Vertu a run for its money, Tag Heuer has upped the ante with its newest, the Meridiist Automobili Lamborghini. In addition to that world famous 1.9-inch sapphire crystal display, 2 megapixel camera, media player, Bluetooth, and roughly seven hours of talk time, this guy throws the Lamborghini logo into the mix. Available in a limited edition of 1963 (the date that its namesake was first sold), look for it sometime this month at selected TAG Heuer and Lamborghini retailers -- which we're sure you frequent anyways. Mobiado’s Grand 350 Pioneer is fit for an extraterrestrial

Say your phone is accidentally lost in the void of space, never to be seen or touched by a human being again. Wouldn't it be comforting to know that any alien creature coming in contact with it a hundred, a thousand, or a million years from now would be able to deduce that you come in peace? With luxury phone maker Mobiado's latest version of the Grand 350, finally, you have that option available to you. As its name suggests, the 350 Pioneer is some sort of oddly-conceived tribute to NASA's Pioneer missions that features an engraving similar to the ones launched on its early craft; it describes our solar system, Earth's orientation within it, and basically tries to let your foreign friend know that you mean no harm using diagrams alone. The out-of-this-world spec sheet doesn't end there, though: you also get a meteorite embedded behind the display's sapphire crystal and etched text on the side letting everyone know your commitment to supporting the Pioneer program in as gaudy a way as possible. The Nokia E71-based phone is limited to just 37 examples, so you'd better get in line now -- and don't forget your space suit.

Luxury wine vending machine

So it's not really surprising this newest (and quite unique) model is made in Nippon, too: A vending machine that lets you buy luxury wines through a pre-paid card. The machine is supposed to soften the negative effects the current recession has for wine lovers.
