    Toshiba unveils 21-inch, glasses-free HD 3D display

We're about to get yet another 3D display. This time, it's Toshiba Mobile Display Corp. that's prepping such a screen, an autostereoscopic (glasses-free), 21-inch 3D HD display "for use in next-generation 3D monitors", to be more exact. Toshiba says the main selling points is that its new "integral imaging system" with 9-parallax design makes it possible for users to view 3D images from a wider range of viewing angles.

Snort! Sony is getting ready to beat the iPad with a new “gadget”

The WSJ just posted a blind item about a killer phone Sony has in the works that is capable of downloading and playing Playstation games. It will probably just be a PSP Go with a phone inside. Shown here is an artist's rendition of what it will look like. But wait! There's more!

  • Et tu, Nokia?

    Et tu, Nokia?

In the US we have a somewhat myopic view of cell phones. We have iPhones and Blackberrys and now Androids and Nexuses for smartphones, and a whole bunch of feature phones from manufacturers like LG and Motorola and Samsung. Notably absent from most wireless stores in the U.S. are Nokia, which is odd since Nokia owns more of the global cell phone market than its next three competitors combined. Part of this discrepancy is no doubt due to the market differences between U.S. carriers and wireless carriers in the rest of the world. But a large part of this can be explained by Nokia's sheer arrogance.

Cell phone has built in cigarette lighter. In other news, I have officially seen it all.

Straight out of China comes “The Machismo!” – billed as “the world’s hottest cigarette lighter mobile phone.” Does that mean there’s more than one? Like, are there other, lesser, not-as-hot cell phones with built-in cigarette lighters? Nothing would surprise me after seeing this.

Mobile web may beat out mobile apps in the long run

Taptu, the mobile search solution, has been keeping an eye on the mobile web -- specifically what they're calling the mobile touch web, which I guess is slightly different from the non-touch mobile web -- and has produced a fairly comprehensive report of their findings. Of particular interest is the fact that "there are a higher proportion of shopping and services sites on the mobile touch Web (20%) compared to Apple’s App Store (3.6%)." According to Taptu, this is because "the mobile touch Web provides the opportunity for direct-to-consumer billing."

Scosche solBAT II solar powered charger actually decently priced at $30

I’ll be damned. A solar charger with a 1500mAh capacity battery and 5-volt output from a relatively well known manufacturer priced at $30. That actually seems reasonable. The solBAT II from Scosche features a standard USB output port for charging most of your portable devices and it even comes with a little suction mount case for use in the car. So what’s the catch for $30?

Predictable rumor: Activision looking to bring DJ Hero to mobile platforms

The rumor: Activision is looking to bring DJ Hero to mobile devices. You can assume the iPhone would be among the platforms supported. The facts: DJ Hero didn't do too well, but Activision put a hell of a lot of money into it, so it wants to make as much of that back as possible.

TeleNav creating GPS blog reading system

To me, geo-tagging in photography hasn't really held much interest. Sure, it's helpful when you see someones work that you admire, but generally I've always felt that it was kind of silly. TeleNav is looking to change that, through the use of a device that will show you images to places in your area that have been tagged.

  • The Mobile Mobile is a magnificent and melodious module of merriment

The Mobile Mobile is a magnificent and melodious module of merriment

Faced with an agency-wide phone upgrade that left fifty older HTC devices homeless, UK-based Lost Boys International decided to act on instinct in the most natural of ways: by turning each device into a cog in a musical mobile that hangs just inside the entrance of its Brick Lane studio. Even better, all those phones are connected in a way that turns each one into a member of some crazy techno orchestra, the results of which can be seen after the break in an unbelievably fun rendition of a Christmas song you're bound to hear a dozen more times today. If that's not enough, you can also control it live, thanks to a webcam and a flash interface that accepts keyboard commands. LBi Creative Director James Théophane has the project chronicled if you want the full details, but more importantly, just make sure you experience the holiday choral after the break.

  • Review: AT&T Navigator app for iPhone

Review: AT&T Navigator app for iPhone

I've been using the AT&T Navigator app for iPhone for a couple of months now. This is a free app, but it requires a $10/month subscription from AT&T (or $70 for an annual subscription). I'm not going to belabor the GPS functions too much in this review: it's almost the year 2010, and the global positioning system has been used to provide turn-by-turn directions for long enough now that any GPS device or application being reviewed should do that basic job. Instead, I'm going to examine how useful a GPS function is on your mobile phone, talk about some of what's nice (and not-so-nice) about the AT&T Navigator, and look at the value proposition of a $10/month subscription in light of Google's free turn-by-turn driving directions on the Verizon Droid.

iPhone to be sold by Tesco in the UK, hemorrhages cachet

So we know the iPhone has been slumming it and selling itself on Walmart shelves in the US for a while now, but it's retained a somewhat more dignified cachet over here in Europe. Until today, that is. Just "in time for Christmas," British retailer Tesco will make it possible for you to buy your socks, no-frills groceries, and shiny smartphone all in the same place. You'll still be riding O2's network, thanks to the Tesco Mobile service, but the department store chain is likely to price its contracts more aggressively, as it already has a £30 per month plan that includes unlimited calls, texts, and web surfing. Maybe there's something to this whole "competition" thing after all then, eh?
