Motor your boat with a cordless drill
Posted on October 6, 2009 | 1 CommentTwo questions: first, do you have a boat? Second, do you have a cordless drill? If you answered “yes” to both questions, you may be interested in the above video, which showcases a cordless drill being used to propel a boat. You’re not going to get awesome run-time or an insane top speed out of this [...] -
Video: Some kid makes the PSP that Sony should have made 5 years ago
Posted on October 6, 2009 | No CommentsSony would do well to hire the man who put this PSP mod together. It's basically what the PSP should have been since Day One: a built-in camera, 32GB of flash memory, and a second analog stick. Well, you have to stretch the definition of analog stick here; it's that nub thing.

R2D2 features 8 consoles, projector
Posted on September 23, 2009 | No Comments
And here we see one of the most useful implementations of an astromech droid to date. Modder Brian De Vitis gutted a novelty R2D2 beverage cooler and somehow managed to stuff eight old-school consoles inside. And – AND! – there’s a built-in projector. Very nice.

Ancient cell phone modded into media center PC
Posted on August 26, 2009 | No Comments
Now THIS, my friends, is a mod. An enterprising Finnish fellow has gutted a super old Mobira Talkman cell phone kit and installed a home theater PC inside of it. That's impressive, yes, but what's more impressive is that he fit a USB hub, Wi-Fi card, sound card, and a 128x128 OLED screen into the handset. Oh, and it works for VOIP calls to boot.

Portable TurboGrafx-16 for a little nostalgia on the go
Posted on July 29, 2009 | No CommentsBehold! A portable TurboGrafx-16 system. A modder named Bacteria (eewww) cobbled together a very nice-looking system called “IntoGrafx” featuring three-hour battery life and a 5.4-inch screen. The IntoGrafx plays original TurboGrafx game cards (the system uses an actual TurboGrafx board, after all) and there’s a region switch that allows you to play either Japanese or US [...] -
Man hacks USB charging port into netbook battery
Posted on July 29, 2009 | No CommentsWow, this is impressive. An enterprising young man from a faraway land (the Czech Republic!) took an ordinary battery from an MSI Wind netbook and added a USB charging port to it. He can charge his iPhone twice over and the battery still works like normal in his MSI Wind. They should add USB charging ports to all batteries!
Bored? Lazy? Trendy? All of the above? You can turn a run-of-the-mill Guitar Hero or Rock Band controller into a weapon used for checking, folding, calling, raising, lowering, and more – YES! You can play online poker with a guitar controller! Finally!
When I interviewed modder extraordinaire Ben Heckendorn a couple of months ago, he mentioned that he'd been working on building a pinball machine from the ground up and that it'd be called "Bill Paxton Pinball" when all is said and done. While it's not quite together yet, Heckendorn has made some serious progress on the actual cabinet itself, which now includes photos of Paxton in various movie and TV roles such as Twister, Big Love, and True Lies.
