  • Live-action “Akira” is coming, and the Hughes brothers will direct it

Live-action “Akira” is coming, and the Hughes brothers will direct it

One of the best manga ever created, Akira, is going to the big screen. And this time, it won't be an anime (like the one from 1988) but a live-action film. We first reported about plans to shoot the live-action remake, whose rights were bought by Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, back in February 2008. The idea was scrapped a few months later, until New York Magazine wrote in February this year the studio is in negotiations with the Hughes Brothers (who directed "The Book Of Eli") to direct the movie.

Toy Story 3 clearly quite popular, has $109 million opening weekend

It's safe to say that Toy Story is still Pixar's biggest, most beloved franchise. The third movie, which Biggs inexplicably reviewed the other day—should I review the new Roots album here?— took home some $109 million at the weekend. That's Pixar's biggest opening weekend ever. The other big, animated feature of the year, Shrek Forever After, only took home $71 million its first weekend.

  • Review: Toy Story 3

    Review: Toy Story 3

We don’t do many movie reviews here at CrunchGear, mostly because we’re into gadgets and movies are, in a way, the anti-thesis of the physical. Semantics aside, Toy Story 3 was great. The story is simple: Andy, the toys’ owner, is leaving for college. His toys, resigning themselves to a life in the attic, prep themselves [...]

  • Will Billy Elliot be Peter Parker?

Will Billy Elliot be Peter Parker?

Word on the street (read: Bleeding Cool) is that Jamie Bell, the actor who played Billie Elliot back in the day, has been selected by Sony to be Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man movie. Because that's what you want: the movie studio selecting the star of a film, not like the director or anything. It's not official so don't freak out yet, but this is still a fine place to channel your nerd-outrage.

David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake, explains why the Metal Gear movie died

The Metal Gear movie is not going to happen. We've known this since January, but now some of the folks that were to have been involved are speaking out. Chief among the speaker-outers is David Hayter, the English voice actor of Solid Snake (and a successful Hollywood writer in his own right, having written (or co-written) such films as the first X-Men movie and The Watchmen ). Hayter says what we've all "known" for a while, that Sony Pictures and Konami simply couldn't agree on a number of things, including money. Hard to make a movie without money.

Prince of Persia didn’t do too well at the box office (and critics didn’t like it either)

After all that controversy, after all that hype, the Prince of Persia movie made only $30 million at the weekend. It was bested by Sex and the City 2, which, from what I understand, is pretty wretched. Nobody expected the movie to make Shrek-like money, but not beating rated R Sex and the City? Oh, dear.

  • There will be a Mass Effect movie. Will Lost’s Matthew Fox play Commander Shepard?

There will be a Mass Effect movie. Will Lost’s Matthew Fox play Commander Shepard?

It's takes a special type of nerd to read a video game's novelization, and I'm none too proud to say that I recently started reading the Mass Effect novel. But there's a certain quiet dignity in reading a novelization that simply isn't present when sitting at the multiplex (or downloading the Blu-ray rip, as it were) watching a movie. Get ready: EA has sold the movie rights to Mass Effect, and it's gone to Legendary Pictures, the same people behind The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and The Hangover. So there's hope the movie won't be total dross.

Looks like Netflix has decided to go with Microsoft's PlayReady DRM for all upcoming Netflix-ready devices. If all goes according to plan you shouldn't even notice the DRM being there, but we all know how well DRM has worked in the past.

Iron Man 2 will be the widest release in history (and it’s already made $121 million overseas)

Excited for Iron Man 2? How could you be, after finding out that the movie's producers removed all of the first movie's charm? But, whatever, let's not mince any words: the movie will be huge. It opens at midnight tonight here in the U.S. in what threatens to be the widest movie release in the history of movie releases. Actually, "threatens" is the wrong word to use: it will, in fact, be the widest release ever.

Is Christopher Nolan’s next Batman movie fated to be terrible?

Yes, there will be another Christopher Nolan-directed Batman movie. This should be good news since the first two movies were good, certainly watchable. But what about this scary prediction: the movie will be garbage, and there's ample evidence to support this.

Surprise: Iron Man 2 nowhere near as good as the first one

That's funny. When I last wrote about Iron Man 2, I had guessed that Scarlett Johansson would be the only reason to see the movie, and it looks like I was right! The first review of the movie has been published, and it includes this: "Meanwhile, [Johansson] struts through the film in various stages of dress and undress, which might be the best thing about Iron Man 2 for its younger male fans." Other than that? The movie is hot garbage. Go figure.
