  • Coming soon to an iPhone near you: Netflix

Coming soon to an iPhone near you: Netflix

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings got up on stage right after Apple CEO Steve Jobs at the WWDC 2010 conference, which we're liveblogging here. Guess why he was there: there's a Netflix app for iPhone on the way, and it's coming this Summer.

It isn't much of a surprise. I mean, Netflix already has an (amazing) iPad app, and it started surveying interest for an iPhone app early March 2010, while rumors of its impending launch have been swirling for much longer.

  • Netflix app headed for the iPhone

Netflix app headed for the iPhone

Digg this! After two months of burning up the iPad, Netflix is ready to devour its latest platform: the iPhone. Just like the iPad app -- where it reigns as the number one downloaded entertainment app, Netflix will have you know -- it's free, and you can pick up your playback from the last spot, as with all Netflix players. Unlike the iPad, the UI actually looks fairly optimized for the platform, including an app-optimized search of your instant queue. It also features "seamless" switching between networks, with 3G streaming apparently a go. It launches this summer.

  • Xbox 360 to add Hulu?

    Xbox 360 to add Hulu?

From DVR to On-Demand, more and more TV viewers are choosing when they get to watch their favorite programs. The greater question has been how you’ll be able to get all the other content to your screen — stuff like Netflix and Hulu. If you have an Xbox, the latter problem may be a thing of the past.

  • Netflix for iPad hacked and running on iPhone (update: disabled)

Netflix for iPad hacked and running on iPhone (update: disabled)

How desperate are you to get Netflix running on your iPhone? Desperate enough to jailbreak, grab frameworks from your iPad, and do some plist hacking? If the answer to those questions is "yes," then the folks at ModMyi have something they'd like to show you. According to the site, a tipster has been able to get the video streaming service up and playing on an iPhone by making what appears to be fairly simple changes to his device; namely, boosting the iPad's MediaPlayer.framework and altering plist settings once the app was installed on his phone. It's not all wine and roses, as using Netflix where it's not supposed to be used causes a massive battery drain (go figure), and there are issues with crashing and 3G playback (two more unsurprising problems). Still, it can be done, and this is just the start -- so if you want to get in on the party (and maybe even help out a little bit), hit the read link and see what it's all about.

Update: Cody tells us the powers that be have already disabled this little gem of a workaround. We have to hand it to you, powers that be -- that was mighty quick for a Memorial Day weekend.

    [Thanks, Cody]

Netflix goes with Microsoft PlayReady DRM for upcoming streaming devices

Looks like Netflix has decided to go with Microsoft's PlayReady DRM for all upcoming Netflix-ready devices. If all goes according to plan you shouldn't even notice the DRM being there, but we all know how well DRM has worked in the past.

The new Roku Netflix experience adds search, Instant Queue modification features

Woot! Netflix for Roku's wee little box will be updated "soon" for Netflix subscribers, adding search functionality that the service badly needed. As you can see from this jaunty video, the entire UI has been improved and the standard "press left to see all of the other movies" is gone, giving you more movies per page and a considerably more streamlined experience. The best thing? You can now add movies to your queue from the box. Click through for a video and a bit more info.

DirecTV would like to remind you that they will have Avatar on time, unlike Netflix

We're starting to see the results of Netflix's deal with the devil. DirecTV really wants to make sure you know that while Netflix won't have Fox and Time Warner's movies at release day, they will be on PPV. Is that the sound of someone rubbing their hands together in a greedy way?

Subtitles starting to show up on Netflix instant viewing

There's always been a few annoying little issues left to be addressed on Netflix Instant viewing. I mean, you can't get 1080p, there's not 5.1 sound, and most importantly, there's no subtitles. As someone show has family members with hearing disabilities, I've been keenly aware that Netflix has been lacking in that regard. There's good news though, Netflix has been working on that particular issue, and just started rolling it out to the public.

Netflix comes to the Nintendo Wii

Officially official (as opposed to rumored, I suppose): You can now stream Netflix on your Nintendo Wii. You can only stream in standard definition, so if that matters to you… Oh, and you’ll need to request a streaming disc, à la the PS3, in order to stream content. That’s about it.

Netflix might still be coming to the Wii

The story here is that Reed Hastings, Netflix’s CEO of course, said at CES that the chances of Netflix launching on the Wii is “excellent.” That’s what he said. Excellent, not “Yup, it’s coming out on February 28, 2010,” so don’t get your hopes up just yet. But at least time we’re hearing it from [...]

Netflix sued in privacy suit over releasing movie rental records (in a roundabout way)

Netflix is in a spot of trouble. The movie rental company has been sued by a woman who claims that it ostensibly revealed her sexual orientation. Against her wishes, obviously. Such an act amounted to an invasion of privacy, the suit argues.
