Sprint’s WiMAX service teases EVO 4G-toting New Yorkers (update: LA and SF, too)
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsWe'd figured that Sprint and partner Clearwire were going to have a devil of a time rolling out WiMAX this year in New York City; urban canyons are always tricky, of course, but their oddball 2500MHz spectrum allocation isn't the best at penetrating buildings and other structures, either. On that note, we'd been tipped earlier this week that a reader was seeing some weak WiMAX reception for the first time on his EVO 4G near Coney Island (see a shot after the break), and now, we've been able to independently confirm it on one of our own units -- in saturated Midtown, no less -- though we weren't able to do much with it beyond get a notification that a "4G network is available." Clearly this isn't ready for primetime use, but it's a good sign that these guys have officially started lighting up a few cells here and there. 1080p streaming, anyone?

Sprint voice service down in New York City (updated with official statement)

We certainly don't want to point the finger at a wildly-successful EVO 4G launch just yet, but it seems that Sprint's voice service is down in New York City (data is still working, for what it's worth). This is happening consistently for three of us here in the city with EVOs on hand, so it certainly seems like a real problem. We're reaching out to Sprint for comment and we'll let you know what we hear.

Let's hope those glorious EVOs resume normal operation shortly."One of our VoIP switches in New York did experience an equipment failure earlier today causing some traffic to be rerouted to another switching location during the repair process and resulting in call congestion for some Sprint customers. AT&T making tourists even more annoying with free Times Square WiFi
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsAT&T's master plan to relieve 3G data congestion in New York City? Give the crush of upward-facing tourists in Times Square free WiFi. AT&T will announce its first ever free outdoor WiFi hotspot later today located at the north central part of Times Square, near 7th Avenue between 45th and 47th Street. Qualifying AT&T customers with smartphones like the iPhone will automatically switch from 3G data to WiFi when in range. Great, just what Times Square needs: smartphone wielding pedestrians enticed by fast data to be even more oblivious to the pace of busy New Yorkers. If successful, AT&T will add WiFi hotspots to other high-traffic areas... and hopefully help push through tourist-lane legislation that could solve NYC's real congestion problems.

T-Mobile rolls out HSPA+ throughout Northeast, dares to say it offers ‘4G speeds’
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsWith New York City proper under its belt, T-Mobile is turning its attention to much of the remainder of the nation's Northeast to be blessed with 21Mbps (theoretically, anyway) HSPA+ service. Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, much of Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island have all now gotten their switch flipped, with Boston and Washington, DC going live "in the coming weeks." The most interesting bit, though, might be the opening volley of T-Mobile's press release (which you can find after the break): "4G Speeds." With Sprint pimping WiMAX hard than ever and Verizon's first LTE markets coming any week now, it makes sense that T-Mobile would want to go on the offensive here -- but since both of those legit 4G techs can scale to higher speeds than HSPA can, it'll be interesting to see for how long the argument holds up.

Nokia’s New York flagship store closes today
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsImagine our luck: we just happened to stroll into Nokia's New York flagship store today on 57th between 5th and Madison Avenue, only to discover that it was practically torn down and set to close permanently today, a move that Nokia announced late last year. A representative approached us as soon as we entered and said, "the only phones we have are from this point forward; there's nothing else in the store." Interestingly, a call over to Nokia's other North American flagship in Chicago confirmed that it isn't closing today and no date has been set (at least, not a date that anyone is talking about) -- so there's one more outpost in the States if you want to get your Nokia on one last time. Needless to say, the overwhelming majority of Americans won't be shedding any tears over the closure, but it's always disappointing to see a neat and beautifully-designed place to geek out go belly-up. And where are we going to play with an N8 before we buy now, anyway?

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network goes live in New York City

Manhattan is in need of as much wireless love as the nation's carriers can give it -- and shy of WiMAX or LTE, the next best thing is some good, old-fashioned HSPA+ with theoretical speeds going all the way up to 21Mbps. T-Mobile was the first American carrier to aggressively pursue a national HSPA+ rollout (though AT&T has revisited its upgrade strategy more recently and decided to hit it on the way to LTE, too), and the goods have finally hit the New York City metro area. That means that Gothamites can now buy the webConnect Rocket USB stick that's been rolling out market by market over the past few months -- and while we can guarantee you that you won't see anything close to 21Mbps in practice, it's probably among the fastest wireless data solutions in town for the time being. Time Warner Cable just gave New York free Wi-Fi

Live in New York? Live in New York? Pop over here and register for your free Wi-Fi! If you have a RoadRunner cable account, you can connect to free WiFi in "several" locations around New York including Bryant and Madison Square Parks and some parks in Queens. If you're thinking to yourself "Hey, a few parks in Manhattan, some DMZ out in the boonies, and some spots in Port Washington (probably where the uncles of Time Warner executives live) do not make overarching WiFi access for the masses," then you're probably right. But when's the last time Time Warner Cable did anything nice for you? Maybe you could be appreciative?
Thankfully you also have access to "thousands" of Optimum Wi-Fi hotspots, so it's not THAT bad. But then Optimum's coverage isn't exactly in Manhattan.

In other news, previously spiking sales of pants in the New York area have suddenly flatlined.

AT&T suspends online iPhone sales in New York City, reasons still unclear
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No CommentsHere's a Sunday night conundrum for you: it's no longer possible to purchase an iPhone from AT&T's online store if you live in New York City, and as of right now, the carrier isn't saying why. Making matters worse, some online customer service reps have apparently gone rogue in providing explanations to curious would-be customers and the occasional inquisitive blogger -- the Consumerist was told that NYC wasn't "ready for the iPhone," and a few others (including us) were fed a line about credit card fraud causing a ban on online sales. The fraud explanation would actually make sense, considering NYC-area Apple and AT&T stores all have the phone in stock and are happily selling them, but Ma Bell still hasn't put this story to bed with an official explanation -- all we've heard so far is the charmingly generic "We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels." Way to quell a fire with the gasoline of ambiguity, friends. Anyway, if you want an iPhone in New York City right this instant, you should start walking to the 24-hour Fifth Avenue Apple Store, taking the opportunity to assess your priorities and fundamental sense of purpose along the way. The rest of us will continue spending a reasonable percentage of our income on housing.

Nokia confirms New York and Chicago flagship stores are closing in early 2010

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Nokia_confirms_New_York_and_Chicago_flagship_stores_are_clos'; No surprises here, but Nokia has confirmed a Nokia Experts report today that the company will be shutting down its North American flagship stores in New York and Chicago, leaning on big boxes and carriers to handle the in-store experiences going forward. Considering the fractional market presence Nokia has in the States compared to the UK -- where it's closing its Regent Street location -- the move comes as no shock, but it's still a shame to see these really attractive, high-tech hero locations close down. The way we saw it, these stores were never about sales; they were about exposing Nokia to the public and vice versa in a cool, hip environment, and regardless of how you feel about the company's handsets, they'd effectively accomplished that with the flagship strategy. Here's Nokia's official statement, which confirms our opinion but takes the questionable stance that the stores have outlived their function now that "consumer awareness in the US has grown substantially":
"In North America, over 90 percent of consumer purchases are made through carriers - Nokia continues to support our relationship with carriers in this market, as well as the continued expansion of our retail partner network with the likes of Amazon and Best Buy (for example), in line with our strategy. As we continue to expand our services and solutions offerings across these various channels, we have decided to close the NY and Chicago stores to allow more concentration on our other channels.
The Flagship stores were originally conceived to inspire and educate consumers to the benefits of mobility through an innovative retail experience, and to broaden the appeal of the Nokia brand. Since opening the stores in NY and Chicago (2006), consumer awareness in the U.S. has grown substantially. Weighing those dynamics with Nokia's clear strategy in North America, and our well-established retail channel with third parties, we will close these two stores (New York and Chicago) in early 2010.

We've already given you a glimpse at the N900, but as of today, you Yanks in the crowd can wrap your own limber paws around Nokia's hero device. Admittedly tailored for enthusiasts and developers to use while the company maneuvers Maemo into its product line, the N900 is now available through Nokia Flagship stores in New York and Chicago, the firm's website and "various independent retailers and e-tailers." A tidy sum of $649 (or $510 if you're smart enough to check Amazon) nabs you an unlocked version with a 5 megapixel camera, 32GB of internal storage and a bombastic, Flash-lovin' web browser. Ain't no shame in lusting after one, but tell us earnestly -- are you forking out nearly seven bills to bring one home?

iPhone coming to The Shack: Dallas and NYC this month, nationwide in 2010?

So we knew a select number of authorized resellers would start stocking iPhones soon, and thanks to a tipster, it looks like we might be getting a glimpse at a none-too-surprising recipient of the new order. As these pics from an anonymous tipster show, "big hug for your mobile life" retailer The Shack will be getting AT&T's flagship device soon, with a letter supposedly from EVP of store operations Bryan Bevin (found after the break) adding that the 3G and 3GS rollout will begin this month at some company-owned locations in the Dallas Forth Worth and New York City areas, with a nationwide rollout in 2010. Not that you necessarily needed more places to tempt you with the device, but it's always fun to have options.
