Then we get cold hard numbers like these -- showing iPhone OS owning 28 percent of the US smartphone market and closing in on RIM's leading 35 percent -- and we face up to the realization that Android handsets still account for less than one in every ten smartphones owned by Americans today. In spite of collecting 28 percent of all consumer smartphone purchases in the first quarter of 2010 (according to NPD), Google's OS was only able to climb up a couple of percentage points in terms of total market share, showing just how long a road lies ahead of its world-conquering plans. Guess that now explains why Apple's response to the earlier numbers was so nonchalant.

    Other intriguing figures include a high rate of loyalty among iPhone OS and Android users, with 80 percent of the former and 70 percent of the latter expressing a preference for the same OS in their next phone -- both rather shaming Microsoft and RIM's numbers, which were a mediocre 34 and 47 percent, respectively. Funnily enough, despite its inflammatory title, this report finds Android and iPhone users are more similar to each other than anyone else -- an uncomfortable fact for both parties to deal with, we're sure.     If you guys weren't terrified of North Korea by now, here's more evidence that the country is absolutely nuts: they've developed their own Linux distribution! It's called Red Star OS, and we can thank a Russian student for unearthing it for us. I now fully expect to see knee-jerk reactions like, "Down with Linux!" even though that makes no sense at all.

    Here's some advice to all of you guys who are trying to keep up-to-date on the latest Snow Leopard news: don't go anywhere near a computer for the next week or so. There were rumors last week that Snow Leopard build 10A432 was slated for gold master, but then you read message board thread after message board there wherein people complain about little glitches here and there. Hardly a sign of Apple polish! Then the disc artwork changes from a snow leopard theme to a space theme, à la Leopard, and there's even more confusion.

    You know how it is: you go down to your secret lair to work on the prototype for your armada of deathbots, and you get paralyzed by the sheer enormity of the project you've undertaken. Not only do you need to find the raw materials, you need to design the bodies and weapons systems, build in failsafes so they don't attack you, and basically write a complete operating system from scratch. That's a lot of work for a busy tyrant-to-be, and frankly such details distract from the big picture of global domination. Thankfully, there's a crew of people working to standardize and abstract robot operating systems to reduce the time-to-market for your electronic henchmen.

    Friends, you cannot go anywhere on the Internet without running into the OEM version of Windows 7. This is the same version of the operating system that'll be loaded onto your Dells, your HPs, your Lenovos, etc.
