Orange begins HD Voice trial in Southern England, leaves out Buckingham Palace

Remember the good news that Orange brought to the UK on our alcohol-fueled New Year's Eve? We thought so. Anyway, it looks like said fruit company's still on course to "a new era for UK mobile communications" as it launches HD Voice trial in England today. Lucky participants across Bristol, Reading and Southampton will benefit from "crystal clear" voice calls, courtesy of the wider speech bandwidth -- 50-7000 Hz as opposed to the current 300-3400 Hz. Sadly, Orange isn't keen on dishing out deets about the special hardware, but our friends over at What Mobile had the chance to play with a modified Nokia X6 from yesterday's demo -- "It was like listening to AM radio and then switching over to listen to a CD." If all goes well, we'll meet the rest of the gang when HD Voice is rolled out "before the end of the summer." How-to: figure out the best value iPhone 4 contracts in the UK
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsChoices, choices. Do you get the 16GB or 32GB iPhone 4? The black one now or the white one a little later? We can't tell you which variant of Apple's next phone will hold its value best over the coming months, but we can try to clear up a bit of the fogginess surrounding price plans on offer from UK networks. Orange and O2 are the first to drop handset pricing and full contract details, but they haven't made it easy for the discerning buyer, with each carrier offering more than a dozen options. Vodafone, T-Mobile, Three, and even Tesco Mobile are set to follow suit in the coming days and weeks, but we thought we'd get the ball rolling with the pair we have now.

Orange slips out a few Samsung Galaxy Apollo details
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsOrange's UK outpost has fessed up to the Galaxy Apollo's existence just as it started showing up on an official Samsung site, saying that the Android-powered phone -- a handset that looks a bit like the South Korean market M120S -- is "coming soon." Beyond that, we don't have much to go on, but we now know that it'll have a 3 megapixel cam with autofocus, FM radio, 3.2-inch display, and "up to 1GB external memory," which we're pretty sure is a typo or misunderstanding of some sort; in all likelihood, they mean it's got 1GB internal and it can support up to 32GB external. Or so we hope, anyhow. No word on price or a release date just yet.

Orange and O2 announce UK iPhone 4 pricing
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsUK carrier Orange has already confirmed that it'll be joining in on the iPhone 4 party on June 24th, and it's just now revealed exactly how much the phone will cost you depending on the service you choose. As with the 3GS, the iPhone 4 is available on both monthly or pay-as-you-go plans, and actually starts as low as free for a 16GB iPhone 4 on the highest monthly plan (£75 per month) and goes all the way up to £570 (or $845) for an off-contract 32GB iPhone 4 on a pay-as-you-go plan. There's literally no less than twenty different price points in all, however, so be sure to hit up the source link below to see exactly what's available before you go line up.
Update: Hey, O2 has followed suit. Imagine that!

Twilight-customized LG GD510 set to Eclipse all other phones in France

Coming with eight tie-in wallpapers and that embellished back cover, this version of the GD510 -- a thoroughly unexciting featurephone with ambitions above its 3-inch, resistive touchscreen station -- has just become available over in France, for free on contracts with Orange or in exchange for €199 ($238). As a bonus temptation, LG is also throwing in a free copy of Twilight: New Moon, though we doubt anyone buying this phone will have seen that movie less than a dozen times.

Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsGood news for non-America: O2 UK has become the first international carrier to confirm it'll have the iPhone 4 ready for purchase and adoration on launch day, June 24. After the iPad gave preferential treatment to the US with its release schedule, some might have feared the similarly hot piece of tech Apple just announced today will also suffer from a tiered launch. It's looking like Brits won't have to worry about that particular pain, but it's also curious that Vodafone and Orange -- the other local carriers of the iPhone -- are remaining mum tonight. Is Apple lending a hand to its old partner by allowing it early stock? That wouldn't be entirely unfathomable, though it would be pretty unpleasant for impatient types who fancy some carrier choice.
Update: Never mind that whole conspiracy theory: we've just seen that Orange is also throwing its hat into the June 24 ring -- let's keep this momentum going, guys! [Thanks, Blizzard]
Update 2: And now Tech Radar has heard direct from Vodafone that June 24 is a go, giving us a complete Brit pack.

This year, prepare to charge your mobile phone while checking out the acts at the John Peel Stage, courtesy of your new Power Wellies. Developed in partnership with GotWind, the soles of the boots collect heat all day and, using something called the Seebeck effect, this heat is converted into electricity -- electricity that can be used to recharge your phone later that night. Motorola Flipout preview
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsWe know you're excited -- the Nokia Twist finally has a legitimate competitor in the square-shaped pseudo-smartphone space! Motorola snuck up on us with its Flipout unveiling yesterday, so today we diligently trudged along to its local offices to get properly acquainted with this new Android handset. Running version 2.1 (Eclair) on a 600MHz processor might seem like a recipe for trouble, but it's the same TI OMAP 3410 as used in the Droid, and our time with the little quadrangle revealed it could handle itself with aplomb. The Flipout also boasts a freshened up Motoblur implementation and 512MB of both RAM and ROM, but only 150MB for user storage -- time to bring on Froyo, eh? With interchangeable back covers (two will come in the retail box) and that handbag-friendly form factor, the Flipout is unashamedly flirting with being a phone for style-conscious lady-geeks, but let's see if it doesn't appeal to gruff old types like us as well. Four big carriers targeting LiMo phone releases this year

Yeah, us neither, but the stealthiest of major mobile platform coalitions is back in the spotlight today on news that four top global carriers -- France Telecom's Orange, Telefonica (presumably via O2 and Movistar), Verizon, and Korea's SKT will all be launching LiMo-based phones by year-end. As a refresher, Big Red jointed the LiMo Foundation way back in 2008, so it's interesting to see that they're still looking to play ball; the platform has typically been billed as more of a carrier-facing initiative than a consumer-facing one, so realistically, end users are likely going to perceive nothing other than a little more dumbphone synergy across the lineup than they do now. Android, Windows Phone, iPhone, webOS... you guys are free to carry on.

Orange and T-Mobile become Everything Everywhere (in the UK)
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsWe did ponder how you can rename the Orange and T-Mobile coalition (topical word, eh Britain?) without offending either party, and the strategy seems to have been to just go for a name so bombastic that it overshadows all other concerns. Say hello to Everything Everywhere. Such is the strident new moniker attached to the joint venture between the French and German telecoms, with the justification being that the resultant "super-network" will be the biggest in the UK and therefore capable of providing both universal coverage and limitless services. We'll see how that works out, but for now it's important to note that the high street brands won't be changing. T-Mobile and Orange will retain their separate identities (and eye-searing color schemes), while offering you all the synergistic benefits resulting from the scale of the new company. ‘Black’ HTC Desire comes to Orange UK, sells out in a flash
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No CommentsWe'll be perfectly honest with you: we're not seeing what's "black" about the front of the Desire that Orange UK is now selling, but it insists that the phone is indeed devoid of color; we suspect they're actually just referring to the back, for which the description seems more accurate -- but that would make it no different than any other Desire being sold around the world. What does that mean? Basically, we think it means these guys need to get their eyesight checked. Spec-wise, this is the same Desire you'll find elsewhere... if you can find it, that is -- it sold out in short order on Orange's site since its launch a few days ago, no doubt a side effect of the customer euphoria caused by the realization that they can get a 1GHz Snapdragon running Android 2.1 with Sense on a WVGA display for free on contract. In the meantime, you might want to sniff around stores.
Update: Turns out the real, actual, live Orange-branded Desire is black, despite the imagery on Orange's site. We're working on pictures -- stay tuned. Orange plans to bring ‘HD Voice’ calls to UK next year

We've had some indication that Orange planned to expand its "HD Voice" technology beyond the hot testbed of Moldova sometime in the coming year, and it looks like the carrier is now starting to get a bit more specific about when the UK will finally have an alternative to standard definition calls. Apparently, Orange will begin trials of the new and improved, 3G-facilitated service early in the new year, and fully roll it out along with a "range of handsets" before the end of the year. Just what can you expect from HD voice? Why, it will make it "sound as if callers are actually in the same room," according to Orange UK chief executive Tom Alexander, who further added that "HD voice really does inject a level of innovation into mobile phone calls," and that "once people have tried it, they won't want to go back."
Update: Orange has now pushed out a press release further confirming that trials will begin in the UK early in the new year, with a nationwide rollout due "later in 2010." iPhone in iPhone app is useless, but mesmerizing

Here's the premise: you take a good old fashioned augmented reality setup, the likes of which we've seen all over the land, and attach a three-dimensional, rotatable iPhone to it. Not impressed yet, are you? Neither were we, but there's some secret sauce to this one: you can actually launch apps on the simulated iPhone. That extra layer of interactivity makes the video after the break a lot more fascinating than it has any right to be, though it's worth pointing out that we don't think the apps are actually usable -- they just give the illusion of launching. We're just about a week away from the Orange iPhone launch, and if you folks across the pond were wondering what the deal was going to cost you, you now have your answer thanks to a dizzying but thoroughly helpful series of tables that lay out the costs of the phones, plans, and the various accoutrement to be included. Those willing to sign up for 24 months can get an 8GB iPhone 3G for free for a minimum of £29.36 ($48) per month, but step up to the £122.34 ($200) monthly plan with unlimited everything and you'll get a 32GB 3GS gratis. Meanwhile, on a pay as you go plan that same 8GB 3G will cost you £343 ($561), while the 32GB 3GS is a rather more painful £539 ($881 -- haven't you figured out the conversion rate yet?). You know what that means: contract ahoy.
