AT&T data down across the Southeast, Puerto Rico? (update: should be back to normal)
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No Comments
This hasn't exactly been a banner week for wireless uptime; Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all seen some trouble over the course of the past few days, and now we're getting tipped that AT&T data services are down once again in the Southeast. Last time, the problems seemed limited to Florida, but now we're hearing that customers spanning from Atlanta to Louisiana are having trouble -- and even Puerto Rico has apparently been pulled into the mess. What's everyone seeing out there?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Everything should've been back online as of roughly midnight ET last night. Here's the statement we've received from AT&T:
"Due to an earlier equipment issue caused by a fiber cut, some customers in the Southeast region experienced issues with their 3G data service. AT&T technicians quickly worked to resolve the issue, and all service should be up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

Verizon down in Southern California? (update: Ohio, too?)
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No Comments
"Preparation is key to building the most reliable network," says Verizon's last tweet, but we hear the company wasn't prepared in Southern California -- reports are trickling in about a multi-county voice outage. Since that new Droid's not so Incredible when it can't make calls, here's hoping Verizon fixes the issue soon. We'd hate to have to call out a different carrier's name the next time someone botches a phone demo.
Update: Several Verizon customers in Ohio are complaining, too, but we also hear that So. Cal's outage might possibly / temporarily be over.Filed under: Misc

Sprint voice service down in New York City (updated with official statement)
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No Comments
We certainly don't want to point the finger at a wildly-successful EVO 4G launch just yet, but it seems that Sprint's voice service is down in New York City (data is still working, for what it's worth). This is happening consistently for three of us here in the city with EVOs on hand, so it certainly seems like a real problem. We're reaching out to Sprint for comment and we'll let you know what we hear.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: And we just got this from Sprint --
Let's hope those glorious EVOs resume normal operation shortly."One of our VoIP switches in New York did experience an equipment failure earlier today causing some traffic to be rerouted to another switching location during the repair process and resulting in call congestion for some Sprint customers. Our network operators are working aggressively to resolve this issue and hope to have service back to normal soon."Sprint voice service down in New York City (updated with official statement) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 14:19:00 EST. AT&T having data trouble in parts of Florida
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No Comments
We've been tipped off today that data services are down "in the Southeast," and AT&T is telling us now that the problems are restricted to Jacksonville, Gainesville, and the Florida panhandle -- and as of right now, there's no confirmed ETA for when the situation will be resolved. Here's the official statement we have from the company:
Is anyone out there having trouble?"Some AT&T 3G wireless customers in the panhandle, Jacksonville and Gainesville are unable to use data on their devices, but still have voice capabilities. Our techs are working to fix the problem and get to the root cause."
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Our own Ben Drawbaugh says that he's been having intermittent trouble in Tampa since he first tried around 9AM ET, which is decidedly outside the "panhandle, Jacksonville and Gainesville" area that AT&T is quoting. Anyone else outside those areas having issues?AT&T having data trouble in parts of Florida originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 12:46:00 EST. O2’s UK network hung up, just like the Parliament — were you affected? (Updated with O2’s response)
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No Comments
So word has it that O2's network's been a bit dodgy in some parts of the UK this evening. Did Gordon Brown's resignation cause such an outage? Did all the texts about David Cameron's shiny forehead lead to this network overload? We don't know, but our own phone's been running just fine all evening in Central London. Anyhow, let us know if you were affected -- just don't say it's Nick Clegg's fault.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: O2's released a statement about the regional outage:
"We currently have a fault on our network which is affecting voice and data service across parts of the Midlands, South West and Northern Ireland. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Our engineers are on site to fix the fault as soon as possible."
This certainly matches what we're seeing on Elliott Kember's crowdsourced map, too. [Thanks, danWebb and Scump]O2's UK network hung up, just like the Parliament -- were you affected? BlackBerry service acting a fool today?
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No CommentsWe've gotten sporadic reports today that BlackBerry service -- possibly just BIS -- has been down for at least a period today, which would amazingly mark the fourth time a serious outage has occurred in RIM's fortress in just the past several weeks. That's bad for any device, but it's particularly tragic for a platform that has staked its reputation on reliability. What's everyone seeing out there right now?

RIM blames massive service outage on newer Messenger versions
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No CommentsDiehard BlackBerry users often compare BlackBerry Messenger to a potent drug. And just like a drug, coming down from a BBM high can be rough -- so rough, in fact, that RIM's claiming that a couple recent releases are responsible for "an unanticipated database issue" that stone-cold knocked out data service for many of the world's subscribers yesterday. Folks using versions 5.0.0.55 and .56 are being strongly advised to upgrade to 5.0.0.57 immediately, but in the meantime, Waterloo says its systems are back to normal while apologizing "for any inconvenience to customers." With three major outages now under BlackBerry's belt in the past month, faith in the rock-solid stability of its infrastructure is fading rapidly -- but then again, it gives you a great excuse to be off IM for a few hours and talk to live humans, doesn't it?RIM blames massive service outage on newer Messenger versions originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 12:27:00 EST. BlackBerry services down in North America yet again?
Posted on December 22, 2009 | No Comments
Look, BlackBerrys are always supposed to do a few things well: 1) grab your email in real time off an Exchange server; 2) make you look important; and 3) work. It seems, though, that we're working on our third major North American outage here in less than a month, with reports flowing in that users connected to BIS are having trouble with Messenger, web browsing, and apps that consume data (though email is inexplicably unaffected). Anyone out there seeing problems?

Hey, Midwest: is T-Mobile down for you?
Posted on December 17, 2009 | No Comments
We've gotten a number of reports this afternoon that both voice and data services are down for T-Mobile throughout much of the Midwest, including parts of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee. This wouldn't be the first time in recent memory that the carrier's had a major outage, so we don't doubt it -- but hit us up and let us know what you're experiencing out there in the field right now, alright?

Verizon “Mobile Web” service currently down
Posted on November 5, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Verizon Wireless
We've been getting a slow trickle of tips telling us that Verizon's Mobile Web service is currently down nationwide, with no ETA on a fix. That's Mobile Web, the featurephone service, not, you know, big-boy data, so chances are you're fine -- our various VZW smartphones are unaffected. (Although we did have a dropped call and some spotty voice quality on a DROID this morning -- ruh roh.) We'll let you know if we hear further.

T-Mobile USA down all over the place? (update: yes)
Posted on November 3, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: T-Mobile
We're getting reports from sea to shining sea this evening that T-Mobile service is down or intermittent on both voice and data -- particularly bad timing in light of the recent Sidekick drama. We've tested in New York and it's definitely down for us -- both voice and data -- so how's service treating everyone out there?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: We just got an official statement from T-Mobile, and it's confirmed -- service is down. Here's the statement:"T-Mobile customers may be experiencing service disruptions impacting voice and data. Our rapid response teams have been mobilized to restore service as quickly as possible. We will provide updates as more information is available."T-Mobile USA down all over the place? (update: yes) originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 19:24:00 EST.
