    A Japanese company called Sanwa Newtec has developed a printer that works without toners, ink or (copy) paper. ThePrePeat RP-3100 is rather based on a line thermal head and special paper that's made of PET plastic and can be reused over and over again. In other words, if you have a sheet that you don't need any longer you can insert it back into the printer (where it gets "cleaned") and immediately print out a new document in one go. Each of those special sheets can be used 1,000 times, saving not only the costs for 1,000 sheets of copy paper but also 5.7kg of CO2 for the environment.

    There is a code to which a cowboy cleaves. He never shoots first, he's always kind to ladies, and he never buys more printer than he can handle. While I can't speak for those out on the lone prairie, I can report that the 52-pound ImageClass MF8050Cn by Canon may be the heaviest printer I've had in my office to date. This isn't a printer for scrap-booking or creating beautiful photomontages of your grandmother. The color printing is delightfully sharp but the speed and on-board features - the lack of a picture preview screen, for example - makes this an office printer through and through. It also has a built-in copier and fax machine if you're into that stuff. It also scans from PCs or Macs. Because we're basically talking about a large job printer here you won't be printing many photos on this printer. However, it has excellent color reproduction and is just fine for color prints. A slight concern: the "media capacity" is 150 sheets on this puppy, which means you'll have to refill it every few if you're doing a few dozen pages per day.

    HP's printer division, long a cash cow, is being folded into its PC division after sales of printers and ink fell this year. Most companies broke out their printer divisions once they realized they could make a lot of money there but now that HP is beating Dell, the company may see a good reason to bring printers and PCs together.

    Epson Japan has announced the Colorio E-800 [JP], a new device that serves as both a postcard printer and a digital photo frame. The E-800 makes it possible to print 89 x 127mm pictures without having to use a computer. Pictures or a calendar can be viewed on a 7-inch LCD screen with 800×480 resolution.
