    Sony returns to black in last quarter, sees signs of hope for the future

    Sony hasn't been able to report good news on the financial front for quite some time, but now it looks like things changed to the better. The company today said ["Sony Global Earnings Releases" in English] in Tokyo it returned to the black in the October-December quarter (Sony's fiscal year ends March 31) with a handsome $1.6 billion operating profit. This is Sony's first operating profit in five quarters, after CEO Howard Stringer (pictured) reduced the global workforce by 20,000 heads, freezed wages, closed 18% of all plants and cut fixed costs along all business lines. For the same quarter the previous year, Sony logged a $197 million operating loss.

    BlackBerry shipments break record in Q3, RIM profits jump 59 percent

    RIM being a thriving and profitable company is hardly a new story -- as confirmed by third quarter earnings of $628 million off the back of a record-breaking 10 million units sold -- but the way it's making its money seems to be changing. More than 80 percent of new BlackBerry subscribers in the quarter were private customers, marking a distinct shift -- maybe not away from the corporate arena, but definitely toward embracing the consumer market. In an effort to further consolidate its global empire, RIM has also announced a partnership with China Telecom to go along with its earlier China Mobile deal. Oh, and there's the small matter of the 75 millionth BlackBerry being sold, but we're sure the cool cats up in BB HQ aren't counting handsets, they're probably too busy rolling around in piles of money.

    When the PS3 was first launched, Sony was losing about $200 for every console sold. As time has passed, Sony has worked out cheaper ways to manufacturer the console, but they are still losing money on every sale. And now... well, they still are. But not as much.

    In financial news, HP delivered something positive today. The fourth quarter has been a good one, with HP reporting a net income of $2.4 billion, in comparison to the $2.1 billion they reported last year. It's nice to see some good news for a change.

    Poof! Sony lost $390.5 million in the first quarter compared to a profit of almost $800 million in Q1 last year. TV sales are way down along with still and video cameras. Samsung, it seems, is kicking their butt.
