L5 universal remote for iPhone now shipping for $50

But this is 2010, which means you spend fifty bucks, slap a little black box to the bottom of your iPhone, and call it good. L5's self-named L5 Remote for the iPhone and iPod touch involves a free download from the App Store paired with a 1.25 x 0.85-inch dongle, together creating a solution capable of storing up to 1,000 configurable screens and controlling devices from up to 30 feet away. It's available now from L5's site for $49.95 and will hit a handful of top-tier online retailers by the end of the month; follow the break for the full press release.

It's fairly easy to find exactly when most Americans started to get fat. All you have to do is go back to the 1950's. Some would say this is due to our fast food lifestyle, people spending too much time in front of the TV instead of running from animals, or even possibly a plot by Colonel Sanders. I think it's directly related to the invention of the remote control. Now, there's even less reason to get up on the couch thanks to the latest invention: The Clicker.

After trying to find a way to remotely control their DSLRs, the clever hackers at HDRLabs couldn't really find anything that would do what they wanted. So what did they do? Built a control of their own, using a Nintendo DS. HDRLabs went on to make the device available, for free. All you have to do is build one yourself.

OK, so we know a thing or two about the "convenience" of using your iPhone as a remote control. For instance, using it to control Boxee was alright -- until we needed to make a call. Or we received a call. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the idea of re-purposing your phone to act as a universal remote seems a little silly. But what do we know? Maybe you hold all calls while Jersey Shore is on anyways. In that case, Re could be your next favorite gadget. This bad boy lets your handset communicate with all your AV equipment via infrared, contains an extensive database of devices, and can learn from any IR remote. If that weren't enough, New Kinetix promises regular updates to the app -- and your typical remote can't do that! RedEye turns your iPhone and iPod touch into bona fide universal remote (video)
Posted on December 2, 2009 | No CommentsApple's 'Remote' application was a good start, but we've known for some time now that the platform was capable of far, far more. ThinkFlood is stepping up today and proving our assumptions right, as the RedEye universal remote control system effectively converts your iPhone or iPod touch into a remote for any IR-equipped component. The app itself is completely free to download, though it's the $188 base station that really makes the magic happen; your handheld talks to said dock via WiFi, and if you've got an AV device, home automation system or pretty much anything that responds to IR signals, your iPhone can now control it. The setup supports multiple rooms, controllers and users simultaneously, and we're told that it "controls a virtually unlimited number of devices and can store a virtually unlimited number of commands." Heck, this thing even reacts to multitouch gestures and accelerometer controls. Don't believe us? Check the vids just past the break.

Guys! Guys! There's a killer deal on the Logitech Harmony 1100 remote! It's the great big one with the touchscreen, and it came out at the beginning of this year so you know it's still cool, and looks impressive with your A/V setup. Plus, it's only $300, which is a whole lot cheaper then the $500 it normally goes for. Plus, when we reviewed in back in March, Matt really liked it.

Believe it or not, a device-controlled car isn't exactly fresh. In fact, we've actually seen a PSP control a Civic before Barack Obama was even a glimmer in the media's eye. That said, we're always willing to give credit where it's due, and the iDriver app just might be the most impressive use of Apple's smartphone... well, ever. As the name implies, this here app is able to control a heavily wired vehicle seemingly with ease -- the accelerometer handles the steering, and two soft buttons on the screen handle braking and acceleration. We'd bother explaining more, but we know you've already clicked past the break to see the whole thing demonstrated on video. Right?

There isn't anything that impresses more than a touchscreen remote. Sure, the form factor is a little awkward at first, but damn are they sexy. When the Harmony 1000 remote debuted a few years ago, it carried an MSRP of $500. Now you can get the newer 1100 model for close to that or this one for only $147. I'd take this one.
