HP’s CTO makes more noises about Slate not running Windows

At a recent conference about tablets and the future of publishing, there was a Q&A with the CTO of HP's person systems group. While he used typical CTO doubletalk, there was a few nuggets of information to be gleaned from his rather cryptic words on the future of products like HP's Slate PC.

  • Nokia C7 caught with 8 megapixel camera?

Nokia C7 caught with 8 megapixel camera?

After seeing the C7 listed in what looked to be legitimate Nokia documents, we now have our first look at the handset -- or at least a device that claims to be the C7-00. Purported specs scrapped from a Chinese site suggest an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, stereo speakers, 3.5-mm headphone jack, and a display measuring about 3.5-inches. It's unclear if said display is resistive or capacitive or if we're looking at an S60 5th or Symbian^3 OS until somebody switches the damn thing on. Until then you can oogle the profile and backside shots after the break.

  • Dell Streak review

    Dell Streak review

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Dell_Streak_review_it_s_a_huge_friggin_phone'; Streak. It needs no introduction, as this slate's been gaining a lot of attention amongst gadget lovers around the world. Thanks to the UK launch last Friday, we were one of the first on this planet to procure Dell's finalized Android 1.6 phone from O2. Yep, you heard right -- Engadget's now in possession of two Streaks, with the older one still in its original and somewhat unstable prototype state. Our new toy sports a matte "carbon" finish instead of chrome (no word on future availability; the red version's coming in two weeks' time), and now 399MB of RAM instead of 405MB (according to Android System Info app; yet it's advertised as 512MB). Anyhow, now that we have the real deal, there's plenty to go through, so join us after the break to see if the Streak's really going to start a new trend.

  • Sony Ericsson prepping a 5-inch Android phone with QWERTY keyboard? (updated)

Sony Ericsson prepping a 5-inch Android phone with QWERTY keyboard? (updated)

Well, this is just great timing. What we're looking at here is supposedly a Sony Ericsson smartphone, which seems to sport a five-inch screen and a hinged slide-out keyboard like the HTC Shift and the Eking S515. Even if this prototype turns out to be legit, our tipster -- who has a solid track record -- says it's only running on Android 2.1 and that development is in its infancy while low-level drivers are being tested. Well, we can probably wait, except we're also told that internally SE doesn't appear to have any plans for 2.2 yet. Cue the angry tomatoes and eggs, but bring us a PSP phone any day and we'll call off the rally.

Update: We've received word from a second highly-trusted source who says that the display is 5.5 inches (too big to fit in the front pocket), and runs a clean Android 2.1 install. Oh, and it's launching in the fall.

HP Slate specs leak, get compared the iPad

Uh oh! Sounds like someone is going to be in trouble. The word is out on the probable spec and pricing on the HP Slate, and HP is definitely aware of the iPad. Obviously an internal document, it's very interesting to see exactly what HP considers a threat, and what they consider to be an advantage.

  • Acer Liquid A1 starts shipping its Android wares in the UK

Acer Liquid A1 starts shipping its Android wares in the UK

Looking for something a little different and exciting in the Android space? Acer's Liquid A1 probably fits the bill. Sure, it's another in a long line of slate-style phones with Android, but the quirky (if chunky) design and zippy Snapdragon processor are certainly worth paying attention to. The best part? It's shipping now in the UK, with a price hovering in the £330 range (about $540 US). If someone manages to shoehorn Android 2.0 onto this thing we might start talking serious, but for now it's probably a stretch for a bit of EDGE-only (or 3G if you win the tri-band lottery and us AT&T) import action in the US. The price of liberty and happiness, we suppose.
