Samsung Messager Touch comes to US Cellular for $50, still features odd spelling
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsLook, Samsung, we understand that "Messager" is probably trademarkable in ways that actual English words are not -- but it seriously still looks like a typo to us every time we type it, just as the original Messager did almost two years ago. Anyhow, the new model is distinctly different (and cooler) by swapping out the numeric keypad for a full 2.6-inch touchscreen with TouchWiz. It also gets a 2 megapixel camera, Blueooth, voice recognition, and microSD expansion up to 16GB, and it's available today for $49.95 after mail-in rebate in "black and vibrant eye-catching blue" (you be the judge on that one). Follow the break for the full release.Continue reading Samsung Messager Touch comes to US Cellular for $50, still features odd spelling

More BlackBerry Bold 9800 pics surface: AT&T and virtual keyboard in, SurePress out?
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsYou might've been intrigued by the previous show of the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider, but this new series of images blows those all out of water. The Berry Fix has a plethora of pics for your perusal, chief among them a showing of the virtual keyboard to complement the physical QWERTY. We gotta say, every announce of good design sense lost on the 9670 must have been spent on this guy; we're really intrigued by this one. If that wasn't enough, we've got two more details that'll tickle your fancy: an AT&T splash screen for one, and claims from the article's author (via Twitter) that RIM's not using SurePress here. That'd actually be quite a relief, but until we get our hands on the sucker, let's just curb our enthusiasm, mkay?

BlackBerry Bold 9800 slides open, shows off promising WebKit-based browser
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsWe've known RIM has had a WebKit-based browser in its rear pocket since Mobile World Congress, and with confirmation that BlackBerry OS 6.0 would have traces of WebKit throughout, this discovery was simply inevitable. The BlackBerry Bold 9800 (polarizing design and all) has just made its most interesting appearance yet, this time showing off a purported WebKit-based web browser with a trio of tabs collected up top. Never mind the fact that whoever was using this clearly wishes he / she was browsing on an iPhone -- it's the 100/100 Acid3 test result that really titillates. 'Course, that could very well be a JPEG loaded up to fool us all, but we aren't losing the faith just yet. Head on down to the source for a few more teases.BlackBerry Bold 9800 slides open, shows off promising WebKit-based browser originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 May 2010 12:54:00 EST. T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide coming June 2 for $180
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsSo T-Mobile's myTouch 3G Slide -- the QWERTY-enabled version of the venerable myTouch 3G -- has been priced and dated, and we're happy to see that "expected to be available in June" has turned out to mean the very beginning of the month; June 2, to be exact, in your choice of red, white, or black. What makes us less happy, though, is the notion of paying $179.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate for an Android device that now has the unenviable job of lying in the massive shadow created by the brilliant EVO 4G. Granted, the two phones are for very different carriers, but that doesn't really excuse T-Mobile from offering up a phone with a lower-class processor, 40 percent of the screen resolution, and three megapixels lopped off the camera for just $30 less upfront, does it? Time for some serious price correction across the smartphone landscape, wethinks.T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide coming June 2 for $180 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 11:41:00 EST. LG’s Windows Phone 7 phone caught in the wild, looking good
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsBeen wondering how that LG proto unit debuted on The Engadget Show is doing? Pocket-lint got to see the QWERTY slider up close and personal in London yesterday, and their takeaway from the meetup was that the device and OS are well on their way to stardom. Calling it the LG Panther, they delve into its deep Facebook integration, which throws up status updates when you hit on a contact in your address book, ability to recognize addresses and provide relevant links to Bing maps, as well as its quick and clear Zune media player. The latter was accompanied by confirmation that the Zune Store will be hitting the UK in time for Windows Phone 7's release, which could happen as early as September -- it all depends on who you talk to. Hit the source for more imagery and impressions.LG's Windows Phone 7 phone caught in the wild, looking good originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 04:08:00 EST. LG Ally review
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsYou know, not every smartphone has to be putting down maxed-out hardware. That's a lesson that Nokia is certainly taking to heart, concentrating many of its latest efforts on lower-end Symbian devices that it hopes will capture entire new swaths of users that'd otherwise be buying dumbphones with half the functionality (and far less than half of the revenue potential). In the world of Android, though, recent devices like the EVO 4G, Droid, Droid Incredible, and Nexus One have admittedly caused us to grow accustomed to the idea that we should all be using blazingly fast processors and huge WVGA displays.
In reality, of course, Android is an extraordinarily scalable platform; there's a whole world of hardware (and around $200 of on-contract pricing) below today's latest round of "superphones." At $100 on a two-year deal, the LG Ally sort of typifies what we'd expect out of a midrange Android device right now -- a gap-filler that can capture users seeking a Droid experience on a Kin Two budget. So does it hold up in the day-to-day grind, or are you going to be begging for a Droid by day two? Let's find out.

Motorola Ruth / Flipout leaks again, due in June?
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsWe're still not quite sure to make of this odd little square of a Motorola, but it certainly looks like it's coming our way soon: Italian site Zumo says the Ruth (or Flipout, as we've seen it called) is actually the Moto MB511, and it's due out sometime in June. We're also told that it'll have WiFi, GPS, and a memory card slot, but that's pretty par for the course -- what we're really curious about it how this thing actually works in person. We'll just have to wait and find out.Motorola Ruth / Flipout leaks again, due in June? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider coming next month as an AT&T exclusive?
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsWe've still got thousands of unanswered questions (well, maybe not thousands, but definitely dozens) about RIM's upcoming BlackBerry 6 platform -- and it's starting to look like we might be answering those questions at retail by way of this Bold 9800 slider that's been making the rounds lately. BGR claims that the handset is lining up for a mid- to late-June release on AT&T, with the carrier having placed a substantial million-plus unit order to lock it up as an exclusive for some undetermined length of time (much as Verizon has managed to do both with the Storm and the Storm2). We hate to point out the obvious, but from a PR perspective, June's not the best month to be announcing and / or releasing anything that isn't an iPhone -- and when you look at the 9800's form factor and the baby steps that BlackBerry 6 seems to make toward boosting consumer appeal, we don't think you can make an argument that this is a sufficiently different market segment the same way you could with, say, the 9700. In other words: we wouldn't be shocked to see this date slip a bit, assuming the rumor pans out.BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider coming next month as an AT&T exclusive? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 May 2010 13:37:00 EST. LG Ally up for preorder on Thursday, launching on May 20?
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsWe should know a whole lot more about this situation at an Iron Man 2-themed LG event taking place later today, but BGR appears to have scored full details on LG's upcoming Android-equipped Ally for Verizon along with a couple key dates. Most importantly, it sounds like the landscape QWERTY slider will be available in "all channels" (read: telesales and brick-and-mortar stores) on May 20, preceded by an online pre-order this Thursday, May 13. It's got Eclair, a 3.2 megapixel cam, 4GB microSD card in-box, and a Qualcomm MSM7627 core -- the same midrange silicon that powers the Moto Devour. Against the Droid, this bad boy appears to slot just underneath in the range, but a little choice never hurt anyone, did it?LG Ally up for preorder on Thursday, launching on May 20? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 May 2010 18:35:00 EST. Samsung Seek gets real for Sprint: touchscreen and QWERTY for peanuts
Posted on May 10, 2010 | No CommentsSo that rumored Seek for Sprint from Samsung turned out to be totally real -- and what's more, it's available a few weeks earlier than we'd expected (in other words, you can buy it right now). Sure, your average power user isn't going to give this little guy a second look, but if nothing else, you could argue that the Seek helps set a new standard for functionality and design at a ridiculously low price point for a brand new device by offering a touchscreen, QWERTY slide, 3.5mm headphone jack, and QVGA display for $30 on contract. Of course, that low price doesn't come without its disadvantages; the phone lacks 3G and hobbles along with a 1.3 megapixel cam -- and you've got to consider that this is the same carrier offering the Pixi for free -- so maybe it's not such a great buy after all. Look for it now in blue and red, with a pink version (complete with stylized back) launching early next month. Follow the break for Samsung's press release.Continue reading Samsung Seek gets real for Sprint: touchscreen and QWERTY for peanuts

RIM’s BlackBerry Bold slider with OS 6 does a little dance, gets down tonight (video)
Posted on May 8, 2010 | No CommentsPictures are great, but video's better. What holds true for salacious celebrity tattle is equally true for gadget gossip. So hold tight and prepare to leer, we've got the first quick and dirty video of RIM's new Bold slider running BlackBerry 6 after the break. Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro lands FCC approval
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No CommentsWe can imagine the conversation going something like this:
"Hello, FCC speaking. How can I help you?"
"Hey, Sony Ericsson here. So basically, we took this phone you guys already approved, and just... you know, slapped a keyboard on it. We cool?"
"Well, no, we aren't 'cool.' Go ahead and submit another set of test results and we'll get back to you."
"But..."
"...no 'buts.' Just do it." (click)
And that, you see, brings us to this filing for the Vivaz pro. It's not a North America-bound version -- there's no 850 / 1900MHz or AWS 3G -- but at least it'll get you some high-speed data if you're in 900 or 2100MHz markets (read: Europe). And heck, it might even make an original Vivaz owner or two jealous in the process.Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro lands FCC approval originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 06 May 2010 11:35:00 EST. Pantech P9020 packs touch, QWERTY, cute into one package
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No CommentsThought that the low-cost messaging phone craze was cooling off? Think again, because this Pantech that just hit the FCC looks like something we'll probably see at retail in the next few months. The so-called P9020 (we're sure it'll get a much snazzier name by the time you can buy it) has a 2 megapixel camera behind a full touchscreen and a full QWERTY slide, perfect for those rugrats in desperate need of a 100-plus wpm rating on the text circuit. This sucker's got 850 / 1900MHz WCDMA on board, ripe for use on AT&T; the carrier's got a history of collaborating with Pantech, anyhow, and there are mentions of AT&T services in the user's manual filed with the FCC documentation -- so yeah, we pretty much know where this thing's going. With the Quickfire's reputation sullied since it took on a far-too-literal name, this seems like a fitting successor, does it not?Pantech P9020 packs touch, QWERTY, cute into one package originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 30 Dec 2009 08:49:00 EST. LG eXpo goes on sale at AT&T, sans projector
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No Comments
Anyone looking for the highest-end Windows Mobile experience you can buy on AT&T, go ahead and form a line to the left, please, because your knight in shining armor has arrived. The LG eXpo -- complete with a Snapdragon core, 5 megapixel camera, 3.2-inch WVGA display, fingerprint scanner, QWERTY slide, and optional microprojector -- is now available, albeit at a $199.99 after-rebate, on-contract price that puts it pretty far into the realm of the high-power smartphone elite. The downside is that the aforementioned projector isn't yet available for purchase, which makes the whole package a little less compelling -- then again, that means you're walking out of the store with $179 that you wouldn't have otherwise had, so just look at your eXpo purchase as a fantastic money-making opportunity.LG eXpo goes on sale at AT&T, sans projector originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 19:47:00 EST. ITG xpPhone seen powering up on video
Posted on December 15, 2009 | No CommentsITG has managed to keep its xpPhone in the news ever since firing up its pre-order page back in September. Just a day after seeing the Windows XP-based MID / phone / whatchamacallit in the wild, we're now looking at the first known video of it booting up. Granted, the device shown after the break is just an "engineering sample," but hey, progress is progress. Go 'head, take a peek -- ain't no shame in the game.
