Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsThe crew at iFixit were jonesing for something to disassemble recently, and Sony Ericsson's X10 Mini seems to have been the nearest thing they could lay hand and screwdriver upon. We'll admit HTC has us kind of spoiled with the colorful interiors of its phones, so we were a little underwhelmed by the demureness of the X10 Mini. Everything is packed into the utilitarian logic board, and although you get to decouple the screen and antenna assembly, it's still mostly a thick slab of highly integrated technology. Still, if you want to see a Qualcomm MSM7227 all naked and exposed to the elements, this is your chance. The source link contains all the intimate photography you could wish for.

Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight… fight! (video)

By now you know that (one of) AMOLED's Achilles' heel is readability in direct sunlight. But Samsung's been working hard to fix that with its new Super AMOLED technology. Techblog took the display to task by pitting the Samsung Galaxy S (4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED) against the HTC Desire (3.7-inch 480 x 800 pixel AMOLED) and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (4-inch, 480 x 854 pixel TFT LCD). It's clear from the video embedded after the break that the LCD still has the edge in the harsh Greek sun, but the Super AMOLED certainly makes a much stronger showing than its AMOLED sib. In fact, differences in visibility between the LCD and Super AMOLED are often indistinguishable, like the picture above. That'll be good news for us just as soon as Samsung can start meeting demand... regardless of what Stevie J has to say. Sony Ericsson’s Cedar, Yendo are official: candybar and an Android-free X10 mini clone
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsIf the phone on the left looks familiar, it should -- it looks a heck of a lot like the Android-powered X10 mini, sharing the 2.6-inch touchscreen and some of its UI cues -- but alas, this bad boy isn't running Android. Instead, Sony Ericsson is branding this fairly low-end dumbphone as the rumored Yendo with Walkman branding, a 2 megapixel cam, and FM radio; interestingly, it lacks 3G, instead offering one of two dual-band GSM / EDGE choices in ten colors. On the right, you've got the Cedar, bringing back what's quickly become a dying form factor as of late -- the simple candybar -- with a 2 megapixel cam and VGA video capture at 30fps, 3G, a 2.2-inch display, and 3.5mm headphone jack available either in black with silver accents or red accents. Both will be available in the third quarter, though the Yendo has been slapped with the "selected markets" label, so we suspect it'll be the harder to find of the two.

Sony Ericsson’s 3-inch Xperia X8 made official, coming in Q3 2010 for €259
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsWhile the real Shakira may be busy gallivanting over in South Africa, Sony Ericsson's handset that bore the same (code)name has today been unveiled as the latest member of the Xperia line. Bridging the gap between the fully formed X10 and its Mini siblings, the 3-inch Xperia X8 will run Android 1.6 somewhere deep underneath a comprehensively customized skin.That means you get Sony Ericsson's social (Timescape) and media (Mediascape) aggregators whether you like them or not, and by the looks of the early hands-on pictures, it seems like a straight port of the UI available on the X10 Mini. A 3.2 megapixel camera is available around back, with WiFi, a 600MHz CPU, 1,200mAh battery, and interchangeable covers completing the value proposition. Sony Ericsson’s Cedar and Yendo phones leaked, vying for your attention
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsOopsie! Looks like Sony Ericsson's become as leaky as BP's oil rig these days, although we can't say we're all that stirred up by this particular exposé. On the left we have the Cedar, which is much like its hippie GreenHeart cousin Naite but with a touch of SE's "human curvature" sculpting on the back. So yes, still a dumbphone. As for the little Yendo on the right, we won't blame you if you mistook it as the similarly-shaped X10 Mini -- even the UI looks strikingly alike, plus both are littered with similarly vast ranges of back cover options to suit your retinal taste. That said, there's been no mention on whether this Walkman phone also runs on Android, so until SE gives us a clue, we'll be looking elsewhere for the time being. Our latest Windows Phone 7 gossip stems from the juicy Chinese grapevine. Rumor has it that Sony Ericsson's now testing a WP7 device -- possibly a first for the company -- codenamed "Julie," which sports a sliding QWERTY keyboard and a capacitive multitouch screen about the size of the X10's. Ah, this sure brings back touching memories of the first two WinMo Xperia sliders. Apart from the processor being clocked at 1GHz or above, little else is known about this unborn baby -- no dates, no photos ('tis our mockup on the right), but we won't question this tipster who also brought us SE's "Shakira" and the peculiar 5.5-inch Android device. Skype lands on Sony Ericsson Symbian phones (Satio and Vivaz)

Internet communication service provider Skype this morning announced the availability of the popular service on three Sony Ericsson smartphones based on the Symbian platform. Users of Satio, Vivaz and Vivaz pro devices can now use Skype over WiFi or mobile data connection (that is: 3G, GPRS and EDGE).
If that's your smartphone and you like free calls to your Skype friends on the go, head over to skype.com/m or visit the Sony Ericsson Play Now arena later this month.

Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsWe hesitate to call these legit press shots -- as we've said before, Sony Ericsson fans are world-renowned for their capacity for high-quality fakery -- but German site mobiFlip.de has posted a bunch of renders of the so-called Shakira that look very possibly real to us. They're also saying that the phone will be dubbed the Xperia X8 at retail, a name that probably makes sense considering that the 3-inch Android phone is clearly designed to slot in below the high-end X10. Beyond that, we still don't have much to go on -- pricing, availability, target markets, and so on -- so we'll just hang out here on the edge of our seats for a while longer, or until we're distracted once again by the X10 mini pro's mind-numbing cuteness.

Sony Ericsson’s Zylo slider earns FCC approval
Posted on June 12, 2010 | No CommentsThere's nothing quite like the harsh lighting of an FCC approval lab to call out a phone's true colors -- if a handset can look good here, it can look good pretty much anywhere. Needless to say, Sony Ericsson's Zylo isn't looking quite as slick and put-together here as it does in the company's own press shots; if we had to guess, countless engineers have smudged it up and beat the heck out of it moving it from machine to machine while taking radiation measurements by the time it made it to the camera. Anyhow, the version we're seeing here is quadband GSM plus UMTS bands I and VIII, which works out to 900 / 2100; in other words, there's not a snowball's chance you'll be using it for high-speed data stateside. Not a huge loss, we figure.

Sony prototypes pressure-sensitive tactile touchscreen, hopes to use it ASAP
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsSony may come up with some far-out ideas, but the company insists this one's a bit closer to home: it's a LCD touchscreen with force sensing resistors and piezoelectric actuators that can detect how much pressure is applied and vibrate the panel respectively. Tech-On was rocking the scene at Open House 2010, and reports that the Cover Flow-like interface shuffled icons faster the harder a demonstrator pressed down, an interesting UI quirk in and of itself. Though the publication sadly didn't get to test out the tactile feedback for themselves, Sony said commercialization might not be too far off -- when asked about that telling Sony Ericsson logo, the company asserted that it'd like to see the tech in mobile phones "as soon as possible." We'd love to hold them to that, but unfortunately the applied pressure mechanic is just a prototype at this point.

Sony Ericsson X10 mini goes on sale, free on a miserly plan

What it lacks in raw power and display size, Sony Ericsson's X10 mini may very well make up in sheer cuteness -- and if you're into that sort of thing, you'll be delighted to know that the phone is now on sale in the UK. Carphone Warehouse is retailing the phone for free on plans as little as £15 ($21.55) a month -- and it's available on T-Mobile, 3, Orange, and Vodafone -- or £249.95 ($359) if you just want to buy the phone outright. Sony Ericsson ‘Shakira’ is a lower-cost X10 alternative?
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsCall it the Legend to HTC's Desire, if you will, but we're hearing that Sony Ericsson may have another Android device in the works that would slot in beneath the high-end Xperia X10. The phone -- allegedly codenamed "Shakira" -- is said to have a 3-inch display, but otherwise, we don't have any details; the tipster says that it could be running either Android 1.6 or 2.1, and with Sony Ericsson's custom skin in full effect, it's impossible to tell from this shot. Of course, the SE community has a legendary reputation for creating unbelievably convincing mockups, so we can't rule this real until the day it's announced; then again, it stands to reason that they'd want to make something cheaper than an X10 and less of a novelty gadget than the X10 mini. Stay tuned, folks.

How would you change Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10?
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsYou may not agree with Sony Ericsson's time table, nor their decision on what flavor of Android to use, but let's face it: you were intrigued when SE told you the Xperia X10 would be its first Google-fied smartphone. To date, the X10 has yet to gain the kind of global appreciation shared by the Motorola Droid, Nexus One or iPhone, but that's not to say quite a few of you haven't ended up with one. We had our fair share of gripes and grins when reviewing the thing, but as you well know, this is no place for us to rehash what we've already explained. Rather, we're curious to know how exactly you feel about the Xperia X10. In what can only be described as the most competitive smartphone landscape in the history of the world, the X10 is going up against some huge players; do you feel that the product SE has delivered is up to snuff? Would you have rather seen a different version of Android from the start? Any issues with the touch panel, camera, or industrial design? Digging those hard buttons below the display? We have to imaging that the X11 is already floating around in someone's mind, and chances are high that they'll be looking in comments for advice on where to turn. No pressure.

Sony Ericsson spends some marketing bucks, christens its accessories ‘Extras’

Long gone are the simple times when accessories were just accessories, apparently, because Sony Ericsson is making a pretty big deal that they all fall under the umbrella of an actual brand now: "Extras." Yes, "Extras" with a capital "E," as opposed to saying "hey, I'm going to buy some extras with my phone." Totally different animal here, you see. To commemorate the occasion, Sony Ericsson is kicking off the Extras brand on the right foot with the VH110 and VH410 Bluetooth headsets (pictured left and right, respectively), both of which will be available in August; both fall into the "Talk" subcategory. Oh, we forgot to mention those? Yes, Extras will be divided into four buckets depending on the accessory type: Talk, Play, Listen, and Go. We imagine we can expect announcements to fill up those other categories shortly. Sony Ericsson prepping a 5-inch Android phone with QWERTY keyboard? (updated)

What we're looking at here is supposedly a Sony Ericsson smartphone, which seems to sport a five-inch screen and a hinged slide-out keyboard like the HTC Shift and the Eking S515. Even if this prototype turns out to be legit, our tipster -- who has a solid track record -- says it's only running on Android 2.1 and that development is in its infancy while low-level drivers are being tested. Well, we can probably wait, except we're also told that internally SE doesn't appear to have any plans for 2.2 yet. Cue the angry tomatoes and eggs, but bring us a PSP phone any day and we'll call off the rally.
Update: We've received word from a second highly-trusted source who says that the display is 5.5 inches (too big to fit in the front pocket), and runs a clean Android 2.1 install.
