Word of HTC Evo 4G storage bug couldn’t come at a worse time (update: OTA fix)

If you read our review of HTC's awe-inspiring Evo 4G, you might have noticed that we recommended ditching the paltry stock 8GB microSD card and living large by throwing in a 32GB model. We were being a wee bit facetious, but as it turns out the advice was well-founded. We're seeing reports flung far and wide across these great united internets about errors regarding "insufficient file permissions" when attempting to write to that packed-in card, others finding that the phone will simply fail to read the card altogether. Our first suspicion was bogus flash, like the counterfeit ones that plagued the Chumby, but HTC spokesman Keith Nowak indicated they have identified the cause and there's an OTA fix coming "very shortly." We know it's early, and apparently not too many of you have rolled out of bed yet to get your Evo today, but sound off in comments if you're seeing this issue as well. Meanwhile, we're trying to replicate it on ours.
Update: Well, that was quick. Dre wrote in to tell us of a 13MB OTA update being pushed already, version 1.32.651.6, that looks to include a number of fixes including, apparently, a solution for this storage bug. Hitachi unveils super-fast, super-slim HDD for laptops

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced the Travelstar Z5K320 today, a new line of 2.5-inch mobile hard drives that are just 7mm thick. The HDDs will be available in capacities of 160GB, 250GB or 320GB. Hitachi says the new HDDs are the slimmest, lightest, and fastest in the industry (at least in this combination).

Hitachi Maxell develops magnetic tape cartridge with 50TB capacity

Just in January this year, we reported about a very special magnetic tape that was developed by Fujifilm and IBM and that stores a whopping 35TB of data. But yesterday Hitachi Maxell has announced that its new high-capacity magnetic tape even offers 50TB. No wonder Maxell and and its partner in the development of the tape, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, are speaking of a "world record".

Slacker Radio 2.0 for iPhone to feature station caching, out ’soonish’

Ever since Slacker Radio decided to flee the hardware business, we've been looking forward to bigger and better things from its mobile apps. If the hands-on that Dave Zatz got with the version 2.0 software for iPhone is any indication we won't be waiting in vain, either. The big news here is station caching: that's right, users will soon be able to store music for off-line access, whether you're listening on a plane or in a dead zone. Exactly how many stations (and for how long) you can store is currently a mystery, although the reviewer said it took about 20 minutes to cache six stations, with each one being good for at least a couple hours playback. In order to take advantage of this, you will need to purchase the Slacker Radio Plus package, and you'll have to wait for the app to be approved by Apple, which could be a couple days from now -- or it could be never, depending on Apple's mood.Slacker Radio 2.0 for iPhone to feature station caching, out 'soonish' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 May 2010 11:29:00 EST. Seagate confirms its working on a 3TB hard drive set for a 2010 launch

A few weeks back a story broke about Seagate's plan to release a 3TB 3.5mm hard drive this year. Well, apparently that's the case although if your system happens to be running a 32-bit OS like XP, you're going to be out of luck. This drive, and any other hard drive larger than 2.1TB, will require the a modified versions of Linux or the 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista. Sorry, kids. It's time to upgrade.

Iomega launches StorCenter ix12-300r storage device

Yes, it’s quite a mouthful. Iomega, a company owned by EMC that provides network storage for small and medium businesses, today announced the launch of their StorCenter ix12-300r Network Storage Array. The device ships with 4TB of storage but can be expanded to up to 24TB after filling up its 12 drive bays.

Sony to stop manufacturing Floppy discs after 30 years

Remember Floppy discs? In case you haven't noticed (like I didn't), Sony is actually still making and selling those discs. But soon it's time to say goodbye, as the company now said [JP] it will stop production in March next year. Sony rolled out the world's first 3.5-inch floppy disc back in 1981. And believe it or not, even in 2008, the company could still sell 8.5 million units in Japan alone.
