He’s back: 60-foot Gundam is (almost) ready again
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
We spent quite a few posts on the uber-cool, gigantic Gundam statue that was erected in Tokyo Bay last year. The 60-foot robot statue was deconstructed in September, with Bandai quickly announcing plans to re-erect the big guy in Shizuoka soon. And now he's almost ready.

Not as cool as Gundam, but: Watch Gigantor protecting Kobe (video)
Posted on April 7, 2010 | No CommentsRemember Gigantor? Remember last October, when the Japanese city of Kobe erected a 18m high statue of the giant anime robot? Granted, the robo statue is nowhere near as big as its Gundam counterpart, but it's still pretty cool.

Japan’s giant Gundam statue returns, this time armed with a saber
Posted on March 22, 2010 | No Comments
The giant Gundam statue that protected Tokyo last summer was so cool that we covered it multiple times. In September 2009, Bandai (the company responsible for the marketing coup) decided to retire Gundam once and for all.
But five months later, in December 2009, the city of Shizuoka (some 125 miles west of Tokyo) announced it plans to re-erect the statue in July this year. And now it has come to light that it will really happen [JP] (on the 24th of July, Gundam’s 30th birthday, to be more exact). Shizuoka is the city where most of the Gundam plastic models come from.

Giant Gundam statue to make a comeback next year
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No CommentsHe'll be back: The awesome 1/1 scale Gundam statue that was erected on Tokyo's artificial island Odaiba in June and that was deconstructed in September this year, will be seen again in its full glory. We reported several times about the statue, which stands 60 feet tall and shows some cool special effects (see video below).

Tokyo’s Gundam statue is history, but you can now buy a 1/60 replica
Posted on September 11, 2009 | No Comments
The giant Gundam statue that has been protecting Tokyo for a couple of months is gone, but now you have the chance to bring back memories in the form of a smaller version you can put in your living room. The original 1/1 statue stood 20m tall, while the replika [JP] is 1/60th of that size (30cm) and weighs 4kg.

Typhoon warning: Deconstruction of Gundam statue in Tokyo postponed
Posted on September 1, 2009 | No Comments
Japan has been loving the Gundam animes series for 30 years, and in June, toy maker Bandai erected a 60-foot, moving Gundam robot statue in Odaiba, a futuristic island in Tokyo bay (we reported several times). Bandai originally planned to deconstruct the big guy today, but postponed all work for a couple days due to bad weather (typhoons can get pretty nasty over here).

Man burns down house in suicide attempt after losing his action figures
Posted on August 13, 2009 | No Comments
You should never take away plastic models from a true Otaku. Case in point: A 29-year-old factory worker named Yoshifumi Takabe was arrested in Kobe in Western Japan for burning down his house after his mother threw away his collection of Gundam action figures.
No doubt,
